BEST EXPLANATION EVER!!! on becoming acclimated to what we are seeing on the fish finder screen. Thank you!! Great video presentation! I'll say i again. Thank you!!
We are glad that you enjoyed the video and it helped you with your fish finder. Make sure to check out our other videos and website, for other units and all things related to the boating industry.
I think this is a really good explanation of the mechanics of the FF. Another video would be how to actually fish with one. Are you limited to fishing from the rear of the boat..... that sort of thing. Thanks for taking the time to create this video.
Thanks! I know the more you use it the more you will like it. Not only is it a very capable display but it it intuitive and easy to learn to use. Stay tuned as we will have more how to videos coming in the near future.
So in 70 feet of water, there is a 20ft wide swath directly below the boat that I can't see...an epiphany for me. Makes sense to put sidescan and downscan on the screen now.
Great explanation. I have never fished with a fish finder. I have always relied on instinct and if I see fish. I have fished all my life from shore or boat. I currently put a trolling motor on my pontoon and want to learn more about fish finders. I am not going to be a tournament fisherman. I just love catching fish. I fish local lakes in Arizona.I am leaning towards a Hook Reveal 7. I have also looked at the hummingbird helix. My budget is probably around the 3-400, what would you recommend. Thank you so much.
The fish finder is a fantastic tool for locating fish and structures and learning more about the waters you fish in. Both are excellent units, and you can't go wrong with either. However, I find that Hook Reveal 7 has a very intuitive operating system.
Im still trying to understand the wafer analogy? It's not cone shape, but a wafer? Is there a better description perhaps? Thanks for dumbing this down for us low tech guys. Learning lots from your channel.
I'm glad you are enjoying the channel. I apologize for the confusion. There is some impressive engineering that goes into creating these images on the sounder and it is not easy to wrap your head around the complexities sometimes. It might be easier to understand if I describe the shape of the transmission from the transducer as a thin but fan shaped transmission - still a cone of sorts but stretched out into a thin fan shape and then all those thin layers are stacked together to create a more three dimensional image. I hope this helps.
Hi. From 17.20 to 17.43, you highlight the water column directly underneath the Ducer. Can you please advise why both sides of the centreline is not exactly symmetrical? In this black water column image, one side shows dots / marks. The other side of the center line does not show these same dots and marks. Cameron
Interesting video, a quick question, can we use some type of fishfinder equipment to scan a swimming pool bottom only to check if someone has drowned? Can we modify the software to detect a still body, if more than 5 secs to indicate that someone has drowned?
Interesting question... Search and rescue authorities have used these types of sonar products in their search and rescue and recovery efforts. Units that have down view and side scanning capability usually offer the best results. I would recommend checking with the manufacturer to confirm ability and software capabilities for your application.
Evo3 new owner with ISLA S Fl Marine tracks fishing fresh water until I get as good as you understanding all MFD features (KeyWest 1520 Yam 70) Boat is 2003 and Yam is 2016 so also NEMA2000 upgrade for engine data and new Power-Pole Charge Data (gateway) adding to my learning curve. Love your pace of technical talking and proficiency with video screens. Would it be possible to do a simulated 1/2 day fish in 3 areas of Fl Bay starting from maybe Guy Harvey resort in Key Lago night before adding tracks and waypoints to Simrad and complying with channel markers tide issues and wind. Then modifications like fish caught, other boat conflict, or fish sightings. Returning to review and make additional changes and save data. Might be too much to do but thought I’d ask. I see the Evo 3 as finally duplicating what we’ve all grown accustom to in our cars with satellite GPS maps and hope to feel as safe on the water even at night.
Congrats! You are going to love your new Evo3 and your ISLA data card. They are extremely high resolution and their tracks are excellent. You can use their tracks and create your routes overlaid on the Evo3 but I am not sure about a simulated fishing trip that could be modified later... at least at the present time. I recommend contacting ISLA as they are constantly updating their cards and they can give you more information. You have a great combination of electronics and chart data and I'm sure you will feel confident on Florida Bay in no time. Its a great area and the fishing is awesome. Enjoy!
Thanks great guide for the beginner best I found so. If you could it be help to compare other manufacturers technology's. Like Garmin "clearview" setting. I will look for video's on your channel thanks - this is frank
Hi. Can somebody explain few things on what we r seeing on the 2d screen? The depth line is exactly underneath the transducer, and the lower bottom frm that is the thickness of the floor..or the echo coming frm the seafloor around the centre point of the cone? Because it has depth value..the sonar could not have penetrated 10-15ft deep into the seafloor, rite? In downscan readings we sometimes can see objects lower frm the bottom line, how do we know that object we r seeing is to the left or right of the transducer? Because downscan view of the screen is very much different frm the sidescan...why downscan still hv the view angle frm side instead of top as in the sidescan?
It can be confusing at first. Think of the signal in down view or downscan not as a cone like traditional sounders but instead as a series of thin wafers that are sandwiched together to create the 2d image you see. As thin wafters squeezed together they are able to show differences in contours across the wafter and that is the image you are seeing. Its not that the sound signals are penetrating the bottom but rather the wider wafer is "seeing a wider swath of the bottom. The top of the image is your image at the left side of the screen is your depth reading. Hope tis helps.
So if you are traveling over a drop off, and your beam is straddling the drop off equally in either side. Let’s say shallow part if drop off is 100 feet, deep drop off straight down is 200 feet, and the cone is over both of them, what is the reading going to look like? What is the depth going to read? I hope I explained my question right lol. Thanks.
Great question and well described. Even though it is straddling the drop off it will still also read the deeper part as the majority of the beam would be in the deeper area. As you move over into the shallower it will display the drop off more clearly.
The Simrad/Lowrance Active Scan transom mount transducer is a good option (see link below). It has CHIRP, Down and Sidescan as an all on one. www.simrad-yachting.com/simrad/type/sonar-and-transducer/activeimaging-3-in-1-transducer/
You can access the setting menu swiping the screen from the top of the screen down or by pushing the power button briefly. Once the setting menu comes up there is an option for data bar. Click that and the bar will disappear giving you a full screen.
It depends on the unit you purchase. Many come pre-packaged with a transom mount transducer and instructions. If you follow the instructions it is not difficult to mount yourself.
Hi I just bought the boat they have the simrad fish finder and the wear thing they used meter instead of feet and I don’t know how to reset from meter to feet if anyone know how to reset please help me with it I appreciate..
It really depends on your boat, the area you will be using the boat, maximum depth and whether you are using it for fishing or just situational awareness. A visit to a local marine supplier might help narrow down your options.
I really like that you presented this material straight forward and without the nonsense. It kept my interest and was easy to understand.
Best explanation I have ever heard on sidescan. Thank you
Glad it was helpful!

So quick question are fish finders worth putting on a bass tracker
Yeah, everything was was great. I got a SIM reg go 9. I'm trying to learn how to do routing and charting. I aint figured that out yet.
Thank u so much for this
Glad you enjoyed the video
Please tell me how to turn on the sound signal when reflected from a fish, thank you
