This is the best overall video I have ever watched clearly explaining the differences between the 4 basic types of imaging available (2D, MDI, MSI, and Mega Live) with Hummingbird products, and how to use them to recognize and catch fish! Amazing job. Wonderful descriptions and photos. Thank you so much, I can't wait until I can put all I learned into practice.
Appreciate the positive feedback!
Thanks for helping me too! After 20 years of Sonar only fishing, I FINALLY got a striker 9 sv! The wife and I are loving just riding around and watching TV! Love all your videos and this only is truly THE SIDE VIEW TUTORIAL! Love you brother, tight lines!
The only thing I would suggest is to use a pointer as sometimes I was just not seeing what he was seeing. Otherwise great vid.
this is by far the best explaination of how to read sonar that I've heard seen. I thought I knew what I was looking at, but I was just scratching the surface.
Appreciate the positive feedback!
Very good video. Would love some more circling or arrows pointing at fish to confirm what I think you are pointing out is indeed what I’m focused on. Thank you for this video!
Best tech site for fishing on TH-cam
That is an incredibly packed seminar. Amazing work with months of effort. Thank you!
Appreciate it!
Great video, Doc. I’ve committed myself to working on fish ID using side imaging this season. Wish I had my 20 year old eyes though! 😅
Thanks for the positive feedback! I wish I had a set of those young eyes too!
This was well done. Thanks for putting this together of us.
How about producing a video showing us how adjusting the start and end points of the frequencies can help us?
Thanks for a VERY informative presentation. I can't wait to put this info to good use on my next fishing trip.
Thank you for continuing to educate us and advance our sport by so clearly explaining the features of the equipment we have purchased!
You make it so much easier for us to ensure that we use the technology we have to its maximum potential!
Have a safe and productive upcoming season with your new rear triller, Doctor!
Thanks!
Fantastic tutelage...I learned that I'm a literal moron in terms of sonar use...thank you for enlightening me! I'm excited to put this new knowledge to use!
Thank you for this video! I think you did an awesome job! I’ve watched many videos trying to learn how to identify fish on my electronics but this one is the best I’ve seen. Thanks again!
Glad it was helpful!
A magnificent demonstration and explanation of all thank you.
Glad it was helpful!
Great video - learned a lot. Thank you for sharing. I feel next time I'm on the water I'll be more effective in interpreting what I'm seeing on screen - and hopefully that means more bites!
I’ve got Lowrance and this was invaluable thanks 🙏
Thanks for posting this. The Live FB Q & A was very helpful as well
Thanks Jim!
Awesome video! Super informative even for someone who understands sonar. It's a fantastic refresher . Great job!
Great video and thanks for explaining
Thanks for the positive feedback!
Great review. Thank you!!
Thanks for the positive feedback!
Best video ever in this area
Thanks for the positive feedback!
Excellent job ! Thank you.
Awesome video buddy , you just cleared up all the stuff I wasn't understanding , appreciate what you do buddy .
Fabulous vid. Going to use this to help teach my kids.
Glad it was helpful!
Love all your sonar, side scan ect. videos. Keep them coming please🤙🏻
Nicely done. Very informative.
Thanks for the positive feedback!
Thanks for this very informative video. Your question and answer portion was also very helpful. Keep up the great work.
Thanks!
What an awesome video and explanation! One small thing that may help out would be to put some circles or arrows around the fish, lure, weeds, etc as you call them out with the voice over. Most of the time it is obvious. Again, awesome video and thanks for putting these together!
Good Morning, This is probably the best vid on the Humminbird FFs. Thank you, I have 3 transducers, and 5 screens on my boat. I do think I remember you mentioning that you have 2 SI transducers on your transom, how does that work, are they combined on one screen.
Sometimes the hull design or motor blocks the side imaging so it is necessary to install two ducers with a Y cable. I had this problem on my 1875
Excellent video for sonar fish identification. Instantly subscribed. I’m in the market to upgrade from my Helix 5 with DI only and this convinced me side imaging is a must. 360 and Live seem pretty valuable as well (even with the current Live/Active Target etc controversy ).
Great content. Liked. Subscribed.
Thank you for the educational video. I learned a lot of useful things.
Glad it was helpful!
Very very good
Dr. Halfen, Thank you for the tutorials. Question: I currently have Helix 5 & transducer on my kayak. I would like to upgrade to Helix 9 and add Mega Live plus transducer. Can I run both transducers on new Helix 9 and switch between transducer when desired? Thanks again! Shawn
The mega live will connect to your helix 9 using the Ethernet port so there’s no issue at all having mega live and a regular transducer connected at the same time
@@TheTechnologicalAngler Thank you for reply! So 2 cables....( 1) the existing transducer cable mounted under kayak in hull and (2) separate ethernet cable coming from Live, both to back of Helix 9? Sorry for all the questions, I'm 56 and a little tech challenged.😅
My Mega Live will often "freeze up" and just show a black screen. What are the key things to do to ensure the Mega Live is more consistent?
Great video! Great explanation on these new fancy fish finders. I just got a helix 10 to hook up to my minn kota terrova. If i am in auto pilot and the trolling motor is swaying back and forth to keep the boat straight, will i be able to use side imaging?
Thanks!
Thank you !
Love your instruction. Do you have a video made explaining how to approach and spot-lock near a waypoint of fish that you found on side image or other as to not spook them? Thanks.
Awesome video
Appreciate the positive feedback!
Have you ever considered doing on the water lessons to help folks better understand there own electronics?
Hello from the UK, thanks for a clear and authoritative presentation . I have learnt much of the excellent advice on SI the hard way and by trial and error - I wish I could have watched this when I first acquired my humminbird. I still find it difficult to distinguish weed beds from schools of bait fish in both down and side imaging - any tips?
Very informative, I'm keeping this for future reference. Thank you so much!
Glad it was helpful!
Excellent presentation!
Glad you liked it!
Very helpful video. I have a Humminbird Mega Live system on a Helix 10 & use it almost daily. I have a few questions. What settings did you use in forward mode to get the crystal clear images at 70 ft & closer, where your lure can be seen. Do you think calm water helps, keeping the boat anchored helps, how about your Apex 13, etc.
Same questions where you used the 1/16 oz jig fishing for crappie. Same questions for landscape mode & down mode.
Thanks & keep your great vids coming.

This is an incredible video.
Do you have any "how to" videos for a Solix and Apex?
By the by great video .thanks
Thanks for the positive feedback!
Would luv to see a vid of shallow landscape with docks and such!
After I first got our Helix 12 Si G2N we went salmon fishing lower Columbia River. After trolling a bit I decided to look for salmon with side imaging. To my surprise school of salmon off to our right. We moved over to the area and hooked several Chinook Salmon. I could see schools of salmon all through the rest of the day. There were suspended. Depth 34 feet deep, Speed 0.7 mph heading into outgoing tide. Salmon likely around 20 feet from surface. Si 1.150 to 1.275 MHz. We went back a number of times and never seen any salmon with the side imaging. A guy that does a lot of Bass fishing also fishes there with Humminbird unit. Told me he experienced same results. Claiming the fish were likely too close to the surface to show on Si. We also fished up river on the Columbia River and I was trying to figure out where the fish were traveling. With Sonar I finally noticed a real hard to see fish right on the bottom. After that I did what I could to get a 16 oz lead on a dropper close to the bottom. I hooked four Chinook and my wife whose line I did the same thing to get close to bottom got one. Then the fish stopped bitting or left the area. We now have the Helix 12 Si G4N.
Is there any way to use Si and see fish most of the time? I know they don’t suspend near surface very often. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thank you sir for the great content. Fish on my friend
You bet
Super helpful video ….. Thank You Much!!!!
Glad it was helpful!
QA awesome explanation please more
nice job 👍👍👍👍👍👍
Thanks 👍
I spent the day on the water just trying to learn electronics. Your content is super helpful. Hoping you could help me with one question. I often see blue arc returns (eg 2 dozen) on 2D but nothing or significantly less returns (eg 1-2) on DI. I tried adjusting the sensitivity and contrast but still no luck. My only other thoughts are it is due to the beam of DI vs a 2D cone. So the fish are simply not in range? Did I understand that correct or anything you’d suggest? Thanks!
I never knew what the hell all that was . Great video thanks.
Glad to help
I think a video about various cone angles would be helpful. In forward mode my understanding is that the cone angle side to side is 20 degrees, and the angle up and down is 135 degrees. I've seen a chart of how wide the angle is at various distances of the 20-degree angle (left to right) but no chart of how wide the 135-degree angle (up and down) at various distances. Likewise in down mode the angle side to side, left to right, is 20 degrees but the angle forward and back is 135 degrees so it would be helpful to understand the distance in feet forward to back at various depths. Then the same for landscape mode the cone angle up and down is 20 degrees and the angle left to right is 135 degrees; so, knowing the width of the 135-degree angle at various distances would be helpful. Maybe a chart of all this information would be the way to go.
My mega side image work for whilecand now will not show anything except a contour line. Ive tried everything. Is it my unit or transducer?

Great job new subscriber
i would like to know how you get the boat and the direction indicator in upper right corner of the screen
Turn AHRS on and use the heading sensor GPS receiver
Information is always put on how wide side imaging goes, 400 feet, but never how deep it goes.
I fish 150' to 500' feet down.
How deep is side imaging useful and accurate too?
How about walleyes over rocks or around rocks? That to me is the hardest thing to see
Do you have any side images with Walleye on the rocks and Mega Live while you are trolling or drifting around 1-1.5 MPH?
Do a screen resolution comparison apex 13 16 19 and solix sizes with mega live to help buying decision. Thanks
If I could afford a 16 or 19, I would!
No matter how I adjust my electronics, my images are never this clean. Always fuzzy. Help!
Hi Dr. J! Wondering if you could get word to someone at HB that the contour offset hasn’t worked on the last two updates. I’m running a helix12 G4N. Thank you!
Best way to communicate that to Humminbird is with a call to customer service. 800 633 1468
I have a couple of issues with my Solix 10 units on my consule. I will lose my network connection between the units. What is the proper way to refresh the network? I heard that you have to turn the primary one on first. What else is critical?
How you can achieve such a clear screen on M Live would be helpful. I have tried and tried and my screen is a mess despite constantly adjusting contrast and sensitivity. Settings......
Trying turning your TVG on low
You mentioned cone angle on the 2D sonar, what is the angle in Down Imaging?
Good day, sir which sonar would be good to locate a vehicle in the water anywhere from 8 feet to 30 feet
We find vehicles, ATVs, and boats all the time using Side Imaging
455 khz or 800 khz in shallow water 12 ft or less? Thank you for this video, I needed it
I only use 455 or mega for side imaging and 95% of the time mega
Wi spring hearing question #22 asks about banning FFS, what's your thoughts?
As a proponent of modern technology - you can guess what my stance on this question is.
also what settings to see lures more than 10 ' away?
👍👍🎣
Wish you would do that with garmin live scope
What’s a Garmin 🤣
Great video! Thanks!
Appreciate the positive feedback
Thank you !
You're welcome!
