I think it's probably true that most guitar players are so introverted that they willingly give up casual friendships to spend more time with their instrument. Not enough hours in the day. You are indeed lucky that your wife selected you - most guitar players fall into the camp of "she knew I was a guitar player when she married me".

Great progression, lovely playing, great guitar, lovely to see Rachel again. Clearly one of the most patient women on Earth. No really, there's a wonderful vibe between you that is so recognisable to someone like me that has a similar relationship (the best). I dont have friends either, my wife is my friend and I don't go out more than once or twice a year.A solo trip for a gig or a guitar 'safari' just to scratch the itch.

I appreciate this video so much. It addresses the reality of being a reliable musician and a responsible adult. It's essential that viewers accept the fact although these are this gentleman's opinions and perspectives, they were formed from HIS LIFE EXPERIENCES. Whatever applies to each viewer will be slightly different. The fact that he found it necessary to make this video says alot about the person he is. Personally, I REALLY LIKE his playing. Now I also admire the man.

@@paulstaffordcook8799 Actually, when I stated that I "really liked" your playing, it was a gross understatement. The feelings that you tastefully insert into every note you play is (in my personal opinion) quite inspirational! You seem to have found the key that unlocks the most opportune moment to shift between playing cleanly and adding just the right amount of grit and grime. Often times within the same passage. But amazingly, you have accomplished all this while retaining your own individual sound. Your vids are a joy. Oh, yeah... I dig how you incorporate the Freq out pedal into the mix. Well done, Brother!

LOL. Like watching a description of my life. Minus work as I am retired and the kids are grown and gone. But apart from that, my focus in life is spending time with my wife and my guitars. My friend is my wife. Always has been that way. We are fortunate that we encourage each other in activities that give us purpose. Yes the repetitive playing of phrases in a song can be annoying, but that is what doors and earphones are for. I do not take exception to the words, “hon, can you just turn it down a wee bit.”? It’s right up there with “until death do we part”.😊

As a matter of appreciation, it's nice to see genuine understanding, especially when you have those random tunes running around in your head.😂
It's very obvious that there have been many conversations over the years to have such understanding. The real evidence is your (Rachel) response to Paul's playing in the previous video. Authentic appreciation is a precious gift to have in a marriage.
Paul, it is actually rare for a man (especially married) to have more than a friend or two that is more than an acquaintance. As a musician it is even more likely not to have friends because your focus is on family and honing your skills.
People tend to assume that all musicians are surrounded by friends and always partying, but in reality most are not.
See, you are not as weird as you think.🤪🤣😂🤙

No way, was that the shop on that Mark Knopfler documentary? That WAS the third shop I went to - JG Windows in Central Arcade. Man, I’m now very glad I popped in. I went upstairs and played a road worn Vintera Tele.

    • @bobblake7132
      @bobblake7132 ปีที่แล้ว

That’s the one. The last time I was in Newcastle I went to PMT first. Was browsing when someone behind me said “Excuse me, can I get that guitar there please?” It was Dagan. Anyway I bought a cheap Epiphone SG then went looking for something to eat. Wandering around I noticed the arcade and thought that’s where JG Windows is. As I had a guitar from another shop I didn’t feel like going in so I adopted Mr Knopflers schoolboy approach of gazing into the window at a Strat.

CAN CONFIRM - Fender Vintera Jags (at least mine) are really nice sounding and easy playing guitars. My immediate mods were Hipshot staggered locking tuners a Mastery trem, and Tusq saddles. Everything else is stock. (12-54 rounds in Eb)

Many well-known performers are introverts and cope by developing personas that they can express themselves through. Think Bowie, Hendrix, Prince, Dylan, Gaga, the list goes on. I play guitar fairly well and so people assume I like to perform and entertain large groups of people. To me that is suffering. I’ve done it, can do it, and would dread doing it some more. I’m an introvert and process the world from within and not through others (in general). I run a successful little global consultancy and so consider myself a high performance introvert. I’m good yes, but absolutely exhausted from each “performance”. Paul your video reminds me that it’s ok to be this way, and in fact may be the true path of the artist, to create something beautiful for its own sake and the sake of its creator. And to ultimately be comfortable with oneself, alone in a room, with nothing more than this piece of wood with six ropes attached to it (as Jan Akkerman once called the guitar). Thanks for connecting with all of us. Tom

Tom, I really enjoyed reading your comment. It’s kinda made me reflect on what my guitar playing means to me. It’s funny, we’re all different. Some of us introverts, some mad show offs…. But at the centre of it, there’s the simple pleasure of being able to play our guitars. Cheers Tom

Hi to you and your lovely wife.
29 years I've been married, she came to see the band I was in, and that was it.
She calls my guitars "my other women" jokingly, I guess I'm lucky I get at least an hour or 2 a day to play/practice/write/ record..
As she says, "it's part of me," she loves hearing me playing at home and supports whatever band I've played in, gigs I've played.
At least I'm not down the pub, head in an xbox or sha**ing around, instead I'm spending valuable time doing what I love.
The trick is when you're not playing, devote as much attention to her as you do to your guitar, 😅
    Liked and subbed.

The section with you and your wife was enjoyable, entertaining and funny. She has a fantastic laugh. By the way Paul, You're not a weirdo, I too have zero guy friends. I have no desire to hang out with men. I have better things to do with my time, like playing guitar. 😁👍

Great guitar as usual. Nice to hear from your wife. I found the guitar channel ‘Things I learned from Barry Harris’ to be very helpful when it comes to understanding diminished and it’s relationship to Harmony.

So nice to hear someone say that they don’t have friends, don’t need friends and their wife is their friend and that’s all you need. Your wife and your guitars! Same! Well, my other half, not your wife haha People often judge us for having no friends or not needing them. Discovered your channel today and love your style, man xx

well that was a bit different, nice to get a bit of insight into the life of a superstar, (aye well ye are tae me :) speaking as a 44 year married wierdo, i can relate to a lot of what you guys were saying, but back to the video, that was a fantastic shuffle, and some of those double stops, didn't see them coming, absolutely gorgeous , big up to Rachel for making another appearance. BUT man, looking at your hairy wrist to see when she'd be home PMSL. priceless mate , thanks for posting

I totally get the no/minimal friends thing. I don't desire it at all. I have started a monthly zoom with my best friend from HS, though, so we can play guitar together. We live 24hrs apart, so can't meet up in person very easily. My wife and daughter definitely like to have my attention more than the guitars, though.

Love the music Paul. I too am lucky to have a lovely wife that lets, no encourages, me to do my own stuff but it's a 2-way street. She has her own hobbies and interests and I am happy that she pursues them with passion. We are lucky to live in a big house (not bragging, houses just are bigger in the US cos there's (a bit) more space here) where we have our own spaces; man cave, she shed, so we can go to our places and do our own thing. It's like the words of the Sting song; if you love somebody, set them free. Go in peace Paul.

I’m smiling reading your words Ted. And a little jealous of the space you have. Here in the UK we’re more used to houses the size of postage stamps 🤣. Just look at the size of my little guitar room 😂. But jokes aside, yeah, it sounds like a nice situation you have there. Have a great weekend 🍻

Thank you Imli, appreciated. Actually, despite being in a covers band from 1991 to 2006, there’s no footage of us on the web. I wish there was, because we had some great nights.
