It's amazing how many guitar players have fixated on Jeff Beck's version of Stevie Wonder's "Cause We've Ended as Lovers." That Blow by Blow album was such a seminal album. Very few folks can make it their own in such an interesting way, Paul. You've got the taste and restraint to "get weird with it," yet not overplay. You never come off like you're doing anything to show off. That's a rare trait in guitar players!

Thank you, what a fantastic response to my question! I’ve memorised and forgotten so many solos when, in hindsight, I should of been far more conscious of the chord progression and identifying each lick to it’s respective, or implied chord and how it resolves. This video will definitely require repeat watching as you’ve given a huge amount of information and is exactly what I need to know. Thanks again for the personal tutorial 😊, although I’m sure everyone that watches this will learn something.

I love the fact that the weapon of choice for your improvisation was the Junior. Certainly an unexpected choice and delivering a very unique personality as a result. Very cool tones.
Thank you XLBiker13. Yes, I’d been noodling on the Junior for a couple of days in a row (through the Vox), and I was just really enjoying it.
IIRC the famous version by Jeff Beck he actually used a Telecaster instead of his "usual" Strat, so the Junior might not be too far off the original. True, you have to have a rough idea what to do with the thing too...:-) I've certainly seen Jeff play this live on several occasions using a Tele. Mind you, he could probably get a fairly close approximation of it out of a Jazz bass!

I need a drum pedal .. it's crazy. I'm a drummer most my childhood and adult life. When I hit 47 I bought a strat. Haven't looked back. Need to find a solution to add a simple little beat so I can make Endless River type slow emotional relaxing pieces. That's what I need to stay sane. Hahah I absolutely love what you played here. You are one of the absolute best organic players I've ever heard. You are not trying to sell anything ...your passion is legit. Thank YOU.

@@paulstaffordcook8799 I do. Having only taken up the guitar in mid life, so to speak, and during lockdown last summer (this is my fifth attempt since childhood), I'm loving every minute of it. I'm a huge Jeff Beck fan and looking forward to seeing him for the third time next year at the Royal Albert Hall. Just over a year into learning, I would just like to become good enough to hopefully get up and jam some blues one day. Fingers crossed.

Does someone really think when playing solo?
Comparison:
Does someone really think about every word in a lively one conversation? Rather, I think active thinking takes place in analyzing what you've played, afterwards, like in this really, really good video.
But at the moment of the creation of the solo you tend to call up experience and constantly react to the result of your or the bands last notes, make adjustments, but you don't think really analytically at these moments.

Paul You play with feeling & instincts. I play the same way & ignore theory. If it sounds good to you that is all that matters. If I hit a note on accident it sounds like garbage, I start over until I'm satisfied. When I feel comfortable with it, then I record it just for reference to see how I'm progressing. I don't play in a band or a live setting. I'm a hobbyist, so I have plenty of room for mistakes that I learn from. Love this video. Thank you for your explanation & teaching. Keep up the great work!

Thanks for your you tube channel. You have a very unique skill, tremendous feel and touch. I have played and taught for over forty years, including session work. I think you should try to get yourself into studio session work. Your talent would speak for itself. The days of reading sheet music is fading fast being replaced by the Nashville number system. Fascinating stuff Paul. Really appreciate your approach. I find jamming the hell out of a backing track is the best way to develop my creativity and ideas. Interesting that you say you are a pilot. For me, improvising is flying the 'plane' and dealing with the turbulence while making it sound integrated with the previous few notes and or chords. Keeping the phrasing on a relaxed but not sloppy leash is vital.
I’ll need to re-watch this vid, to see where I said I was a pilot…. I’m actually a driving instructor. 🤣

Awesome Paul as an artist myself this is a big part missing and awesome you did this cuz this is the stuff that really matters to help people progress I think the mental state and vision is the most important and the inner soul of the human playing it and that needs to be developed in other ways besides music and it will come through in your music Insight thought process getting to where you got and how you did it with the ups and downs of all what comes with it and the struggles. What's up there Paul! Happy Saturday to you. Here's a challenge for you, put your bag of tricks on the shelf and play along with random backing track without any practice, just play along cold right from the start. No analyzing, disecting, or figuring it out, just playing along. Yes, I know it's not comfortable at all because you like structure, but as you play blindly, you will begin to feel and hear the melody and movement of the music. At first, this challenge seems difficult, but as you adjust to identifying the melody line, you can play like a vocalist might sing along with the music.
One of the ideas I share very deeply with Tom Bukovac is playing along with the vocalist whether they are actually singing or not. In the structured world of chords, scales, and theory it seems quite controversial, but some of the most memorable guitar licks ever played are almost voice-over of the melody line.
The hardest thing I've done as I travel this guitar journey of getting back to where I once was, is to take a different path. I literally stopped using all of the old methods I used before and started from scratch. I figured if I had to basically start over anyway because of the stroke, I might as well just do me and not anyone else. The journey has definitely been much harder, but I am beginning to feel the satisfaction of playing my own music. I still have the influences of all the different people who I deeply respect and influenced my taste of music, but now it's my emotions and influences that come from me and my instrument. Of course all of the elements you mentioned are part of the process, but now they are the natural byproducts of letting the music lead the way.
To be honest, some days are like trying to scale a shear cliff and others are a bouncing roll along the hills full of fun. The best part is the new sounds and licks you discover along the way. In the process I realized that all the rules are suppose to be broken. For example: What is the blues scale? It's mostly a minor scale, but it slips in and out of the major scale whenever it's convenient. Lol
The licks you played cross over between blues and jazz, with a bit of cowboy chord for good measure.
Clearly, for anyone who is still learning the basic chord structures and note sequencing, this will seem like an impossible task, but it really isn't, because you are already in the learning mode.
I recently started recording some random chord progressions and going back and playing along, cold no practice, just playing along, one take to see how well I can follow along by ear, feel, and melody line. The nice thing about random chords is that you can make up whatever melody you want as long as it sounds good.

@@paulstaffordcook8799 Actually, I think you will be surprised at how quickly you are able to adapt. Yes, you will probably sound like you fell down the stairs a few times, but you will also discover a place for those tripping sounds. Lol
The one thing I take away from this type of practice is how much or how little a certain section needs when playing along. Sometimes I notice I'm way too busy with too many notes and other times I could use a few more. The best part for me is becoming more relaxed and just enjoying the flow of whatever the tune might be.
The only time I try to be technical is when I'm trying to play a particular piece someone else has written or I want a certain sound, but I actually prefer to just noodle along. I know you like the technical side of things, so I think you might discover a new dimension of yourself. Having your wife choose the tracks is an excellent idea and don't cheat by seeing what key it's in, I'm sure you will figure it out pretty quickly anyway.🙃

Hi Alastair, sorry for late reply. Yes, it’s the NUX JTC mini drum looper. I’m really not much of a looper pedal guy…. but I had the Boss RC-1 and I certainly prefer the NUX 👍

Good question Dale….. When playing my Junior, it’s probably my Marshall Astoria. I start with a little pre-amp gain from the amp, and no pedals. Then a touch of my new Ryra Klon clone is just fab!

Paul, I'm sure someone will correct me as I'm no expert, but focusing on the C scale over the Hendrix chord, the reason it fits is because the Hendrix chord is an E7 Sharp 9 with the notes EGBD, the C scale can be used over this chord as there are no sharps or flats, so it would fit, even though it's an E chord it has a sharp 9th(G) and flat 7th (D).
I'll go and have a lie down now !!! Great intelligent playing and feel by the way.
I would think (and I a,just learning modes) but since it looked like he was resolving to an Am7 you might call it an A aeolian scale.

E7#9 is an altered dominant chord so if you’re looking for a ‘pitch collection’ then you would use the super locrian scale. The formula is: 1, b2, #2, 3, b5, #5, b7. So E super locrian is: E, F, G, Ab, Bb, C, D. It has all the notes in the chord - remember G# = Ab. An altered chord is any dominant 7th where the 9 or 13 is flattened or sharpened. It’s more common to refer to the 9 or 13 rather than 2 or 4 as they are upper extensions and flavour the chord rather than define it.
P 90`s are becoming my favorite pick ups. I tried this week a Les Paul Special that was amazing.

I think it may have something to do with muscle memory twinned with theory - plus your own added style of playing- you seem to jump seamlessly in and out of various styles, none of which I find unpleasant, No complaints here buddy - keep it going

That Hendrix chord is an E7#9. Basically E7 with a minor 3rd on top. The minor third is a G note, which is already in your A minor pent. You obviously like that mix of both major and minor third 'cause doesn't that cool run over the E you showed us also use both major and minor third of the E chord?

Thank you Tim 👍. Yes, once I’ve filmed my performance, I open up iMovie on the phone and add / import the footage. So all my editing is done within iMovie. Once I’m happy with the finished product (on iMovie) I’m then ready to upload to TH-cam. However, for some reason, you can no longer upload to TH-cam straight from iMovie. Very annoying. So I have to touch the upload icon (on iMovie) and “save video”. This imports my movie into my phone’s camera roll. Then I go onto TH-cam and touch the TH-cam upload button. This prompts me to pick the appropriate movie from my camera roll. And that’s it. Hope that helps. 👍

Sorry to keep asking about this but you must record the video on a separate camera or iphone / i pad how do you combine audio track from the iphone at the amp with the camera video ? Thx 😊
@@timjx3675 Actually, no, there’s just 1 iphone involved that does everything. However, I can see how you think there’s 2….. Lately I’ve been including a bit in my videos where you (the viewer) sees an iphone placed close to the amp. What you’re seeing there is just a photo of a “dead” iphone (no battery, all switched off, don’t even know if it still works). So basically that photo is just “staged”, making you the viewer believe that it’s actually doing something in real time. So here’s what happens from start to finish: my one working iphone is placed close to the amp (just like the fake / dead one on the clip). It records the movie (video & sound) of my performance. After I’m done, I then swap the real iphone with the fake iphone. This is so I can take a photo of the fake iphone & my amp. Then once i’m editing in iMovie, I add that photo in as part of the edit. It’s the only way I can show you the viewer that I’m not using computers etc. So although that particular part of the clip is staged / fake, it gets the point across that I just use my iPhone. Does that make sense?

I saw in my notifications that you had commented on my 'Attack Of The Klones' video ( with the Les Paul and Way Huge Conspiracy Theory) and what notifications let me see was very kind indeed. The comment wasn't under that video though so I had nothing to respond to at the time. That's all good because people change their minds or whatever and that is absolutely fine.
I didn't dwell on it until someone else made me aware that the same thing had happened with a comment of theirs and they could see their first comment under a video of mine but I couldn't.
If you didn't press "POST" (or equivalent) then please ignore this waffle. If you did then apologies for the delay in responding. I do take a pride in responding to every comment and it hurts me personally when I don't.

Thanks Chrohm, glad you like my 335. To answer your question….. I love them both but I’d pick my 335 over my Junior 😊. The 335 has such an instantly appealing tone…. in fact it’s quite impossible to make one sound bad. Then there’s the looks 🙏. The Junior is also awesome but it’s more of an acquired taste.
