I believe politics should be out of scope when it comes to selection of CJI.
There are 31 judges in Supreme Court. Top five could become possible contender for next CJI. Remains 25 judges and present CJI can vote to select next CJI out of five senior most judges.
And president can concur the appointment.

Study IQ education sirr....many upsc toppers wont get good marks in GS 2, ie indian polity and the reason they say is we need to write many supreme court judgemnts while writing about any issue in mains....wer can we get those judgements sir,bcoz many say that there are many land mark judgemnts excluding those mentioned in lakshmikanth
