VROD Is Harley-Davidson's Baddest Out of the Box Bike

  • The Vrod or Vtwin Racing Street Custom (VRSC) wasn't actually new technology as most thought. The Vrod actually started out as the VR1000 Superbike which Harley-Davidson used for road racing. The Vrod actually doesn't share any parts with the VR1000 engine but the architecture remains the same. Harley-Davidson partnered with Porsche and used the VR1000 to make a road going version of what could of been a dominant racing engine. While the Vrod may of quietly road off into the sunset it's legacy and used bikes live on today as one of the baddest Harelys you can buy.

      Outside of being water-cooled, never understood the hate. Although I never bought one I enjoyed riding other people's. The ergonomics we're a bit weird for me but could be remedied via aftermarket. You do a great job of your vlogs, I look forward to them.

      GixxerFoo. No, HD should not have put the Vrod motor in a bagger. That short stroke, small displacement would have failed in a bagger. Baggers need torque at lower revs, that is not a Vrod. Two things made the Vrod go away. First was price. Second was comfort. But with that said, now that they are used and the prices are coming down, the Vrod looks tempting... Of course, at 66 years old, I might have to think twice on that platform..

      That's some serious miles on a Vrod! They are hard on the tires for sure, that narrow front tire doesn't last as long as we'd like, the rear well it's sacrificial depending on how you ride.

    I owned a V-Rod for 10 years. Absolutely loved the bike! Fast, great handling and versatile. It had a couple of drawbacks though. First, terrible for two-up riding. Clearly a solo machine only. The need for a valve adjustment every 10-20,000 miles was an expensive downer. It was also hard to get parts because of the uniqueness of the bike. Still, it was a fantastic machine. I ride a Road King now due to my being married and wanting to ride with my wife. Still, the V-Rod was/is an engineering marvel and one of the best bikes HD has ever produced.

    • @GixxerFoo
      @GixxerFoo  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah for sure they do a lot better riding solo, found that out myself too lol. Valve adjustments are pain on that bike, no room in there without lowering the engine down a bit. I did my dad's valves last winter, it wasn't too bad but glad it's only a every two or three year job on that bike.

    Hands down you have the best Harley Channel keep them coming now my comment on V-Rods the engine was Bar None I think is the best engine in a Harley-Davidson motorcycle. It also had a revolutionary frame design that nobody talks about gas tank under the seat dropping the engine down into the frame instead of putting it in the frame from the side are you kidding me due to how well that bike is balanced it is even a superb bike for beginner to start on but then I say that a beginner if they respect the power they can start on any bike Suzuki Boulevard or even a Raider another bitching bike you name it butt the apparel company that happen to sell motorcycles AKA Harley-Davidson majorly dropped the ball by getting rid of the V-Rod but at least buyers in Germany Russia Australia and New Zealand know what time it is unlike most of us Americans and please bring more V-Rod videos enuff said.

    The '03 V-Rod was my first motorcycle, and I still ride it today. The styling has never gotten old. The engine and mechanical parts have been bullet proof. The only changes I've made over the years are a few chrome pieces, the hard saddle bags, and changing out the lights for LEDs. The bike is solid, and still gets a positive comments wherever I take it. The ONLY complaint I have is the gas tank is small, but I fortunately found an aftermarket fix I plan to have installed at the end of this riding season.

    The VRod had potential to be a cross platform motorcycle. Harley in my opinion pigeon holed the bike with no options to have it be multifunctional like the FXRT. There was a kit that someone designed to add a Road Glide fairing and small saddle bags. FXRs with the FXRT fairing are more popular than ever these days.

    I'm an aerospace engineer....which with $2 will buy me a Coke. But I love the V-Rod. I wanted one when they first came out but couldn't afford one. I eventually bought a 2003 100th anniversary one in 2009. I still have it. I love it. I had a bad crash where a deer ran into me....(ALWAYS wear your leathers....ask me how I know). The bike wasn't hurt much at all but I was....but at any rate I repainted it in a color scheme I wanted and added Screaming Eagle exhaust parts to it. Redid the intake and added a Dynojet Power Commander fuel controller. It makes about 130hp now (which is nothing compared to many sport bikes) and I've had it to 133mph a few times which is the fastest I've gone on it. Again, nothing compared to a ZX-14 (I love Kawi). But I haven't found a newer Harley I like better enough to sell it. I really like the Breakouts, and looked hard at a CVO one. But my old '03 will smoke it. The biggest complaint I have about it is the fuel tank....it's only 3.7 gallons and my bike is lucky to see 31mpg the way it's tuned now. My car gets better mileage than my bike. So I'm always stopping for fuel. Other than that, I really really like it. I think it's the best bike Harley ever built. I love the air cooled bikes too, and might get a Breakout. I also like Ducatti's. And the Kawi ZR900RS Cafe is super sweet! I always wanted a Mad Max Goose Z1. Anyway, I like the V-Rod and may rebuild my engine to be more like a Destroyer. A buddy of mine rebuilt one and made it a 1390 cc and it dyno'd 190hp. It's a beast. Still has the small gas tank though :)

    You deserve way more subscribers than you have. The V-Rod haters, also called traditionalist, are the people responsible Harley is in deep financial trouble. They didn’t let Harley try new engine configurations or evolve for that matter. It would have been great to see the Vrod engine on a touring/dyna/softail/sportster.

      Captain Fartmaster. Really? A Vrod engine in a Big Twin bike? Maybe a Sportster (which is basically what HD did with their new water cooled bike that they call a Sportster). The Vrod engine needed RPMs to get going. It would not be good for 2 up riding in bikes that require torque. Why are all logging trucks big diesel engines? Torque is needed, not HP... Same goes with loaded down, big heavy bikes that are carrying 2 people. Take that low torque Vrod motor and put it in a bike that is rolling down the road at 1,200 lbs or more and see how it performs... Go up hill loaded down, two up riding and see what a low torque, high HP motor does... Just like your name, it would be a Fartmaster trying to climb that mountain.. Now try going up hill loaded down on a twisty road where there is a reduced radius, off chamber roadway. That low torque Vrod motor would "fart" and crap its pants...

      @@ababbit7461 sorry just for your comment I know that you don’t know shit of what you are talking about. The lowest torque vrod was almost 80 ft/lb and with an even lighter bike you sure as shit can pull all the way to your mommas house in top of the biggest mountain plus it isn’t as different as you thing with the pigs of an engine that are the 88, 96 and 103. 80 ft/lb is more than most bikes have FYI plus you clearly didn’t have reading comprehension class on school cause I clearly stated that traditionalist didn’t let Harley try and evolve that engine and try different configurations, I meant trying vrod style engines (water cooled) in touring models, like the one that has the panamerica. And I do know what I’m talking about I own a 2003 and 2012 vrod, an 2008 deluxe and 2014 cvo street glide. The only point you made that was valid is the torque at lower rpm, but while the deluxe peaks at 88ft/lb at 3300 the vrod at that same rpm has plenty enough hp and torque.

    • @ababbit7461
      @ababbit7461 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Eidrian111 You are so young. I have owned well over 40 large motorcycles in my riding time since Feb 1974. I can tell you that a Vrod motor would not work in a touring platform. Where does the torque and hp peak on a Vrod? Not at 2500 rpm or even near that point. Therefore, you will wear out the clutch trying to take off from a stop with that Vrod motor. The peak HP is 115 at 8250 rpm and peak torque is 74 ft/lbs at 7300 rpm. Now, if you geared that Vrod transmission so that it could handle the load off the line, you would be riding a diesel type ride. You know, short shifting because you would run into the rev limiter real quick.. No sorry, my momma is dead and has been for over 25 years so her house is too high in the sky for you to get that weak powered Vrod motor up to her area. If it was possible, other manufacturers would have made tourers with a high revving motor. It doesn't work. Let's look at a Vmax 1700 in a tourer. Nope, that bike makes the Vrod's motor look like a Honda 250 rebel... Why is it not in a touring bike? Oh, but Yamaha put an air cooled 1830 or so cc, low end grunt motor in its high priced new Venture... A Buell 1125 cc Rotax motor kills that Vrod, yet neither one of those motors are in a tourer... The closest high revving motor that failed, in a tourer, was the Kawasaki KZ1300B2 model that I owned. Too high or revs to make it a viable tourer motor, but it crushes the Vrod motor in a touring type platform and it was made in 1980.

We raced the hell out of that bike from 07-14 and went to sell it with 110mi on board only to find out it was worth a quarter of what we payed and I was the only solvent partner so I bought it out and added a 1550 big bore from wiseco and a nitrous system with 75hp shot the bike stock had 150@tire and with big bore alone it made 178 and cams and nitrous it laid down 255 so a couple passes and a backfire later I switched to a custom hilborn methanol injected 1550 motor with a 245hp rating and a high 8sec pass my best when the Mickey's allowed. I sold that bike in 2018 and finally bought the 20 year dream Gilroy Scout with a 96 S&S since grandma wasn't with us a a bike on the street isn't an issue anymore. I'd actually have to do 1/4s to see which would be faster driven to best get speed(30 mph at 3000 rpm is not best for either and death for the gsx), but I do believe the rod would win
    Mid pegs, don't sit on it and say no way, I took first test ride and pleasantly surprised with comfort.....and power, took second test ride(it was calling my name) long ride, back upright, arms down relaxed, knees high, but it turns out knees high is very comfortable (about an hour ride), after I bought it I went out for 3hrs, still comfortable.
    I might sell my Dyna.......nah
    I put it up for the winter, Ultra out, better for winter. I bought Harley frame bag and I already got cheap Harley bag I had to put on the back of my Dyna because the flap wouldn't hold down while on the front.......so I bought some diy Velcro and I'll put it on the front of rod since it won't be blocking cooling air.......I already figured it out looking at the radiator..........and I bought an aftermarket bra, apparently Harley doesn't sell them anymore
    Did I mention.....it's fast
    In the curves you lay it over and it stays.....idk how they do that but I've only had one other bike that did it..... Yamaha Stryker after I put 240 on the rear

    Great video information on the V Rod. I was told by the last dealer that worked on my bike that it is running on a screaming Eagle controller .I’m looking for a new controller for my 2009 muscle. will the new power vision Dino jet 4 be a good controller for this bike ? Have seen a lot of new information on this controller set up. Thank you in advance.

    Those that have an open mind, appreciate the V-Rod, for what it is. I find it interesting, that the Rod could not fit a Monoshock on cuz of the under seat gas tank. Because, Germany had a hand in designing the Honda ST 1100 cc v-4 engine/ motorcycle , with an under seat gas tank, and it does have a Mono shock.

      I would have to say Harley's styling department had a lot to do with that and keeping that long low profile of the bike without making the chassis too tall.

    Never got into the V-Rod but just got educated pretty good....Been working on an old 67 T120 Triump and have been impressed with the one piece Crank and the cushioned Crank compensator.... I have a 07 twincam and gonna change to a Man o War comp and am worried to find out how bad my Crank runs out.....96" but needs more power .... May be putting in a Darkhorse crank.....

    • @GixxerFoo
      @GixxerFoo  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Vrod was an awesome platform, they run pretty dang good! Dark Horse's Man O War is a awesome alternative to a the compensator. That rebuildable cush drive is pure genius in that unit, you might be surprised if you check your run out. Sometimes the late models aren't too bad but if I was going to put a crank in Dark Horse would be my choice.

    When it came out, I was excited by all the rumors. When I saw it, I wasn't a fan. Thought it was awful looking. It's grown on me a little as I've seen some cool builds over the years, but still don't like the overall looks. However, I held that engine in a completely different light. I hoped they would put that powerplant into a different frame with more of a retro modern muscle bike, kinda like what the Fat boy or Fat Bob is today. That's kinda how I saw this powerplant being used in their lineup then, but it never came to be.

      Vrods are all really good any year honestly, I would go for a 2008 or new just for the 1250 engine though. Power vision tuner, exhaust and a K&N air cleaner is all you really need to do to one.

    I've got one that has the drag package on it with a wheelie bar. It was left to me by my uncle but it didn't come with a title and pretty sure all we could come up with was the original bill of sale/ NHRA info paper clipped to it. It looks a little different than the ones you showed in this video.

    • @GixxerFoo
      @GixxerFoo  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It sounds like you have the factory drag bike, the Vrod Destroyer. That's a race only monster with 165 horsepower, that bike got pretty much everyone banned at the strip. Almost anyone could throw a leg over one of those and after a few passes get below 10 seconds in the quarter mile. If you don't have a pro license they will ban you lol.

    • @jamessimpsoniii2029
      @jamessimpsoniii2029 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well you have the VRXSC aka Vrod Destroyer and it'll do a quarter with a 250lb man in 9.75 at a good prepped track, it'll also get to 60mph down a back alley in 2.9sec if the pavements smooth and tacky from the summer heat otherwise it's a smoke show at best. These thing if they have under 20 passes (10mi) and have no rash will command around 25-35k depending on what's added or subtracted from the bike with the only outside accessories of note being a Vance & Hines Indy race exhaust and a Pingle electronic shift, on the plus side is new Dunlop screaming eagle drag tires. Hopefully your uncle left the screaming eagle tuning module as well as this is what made the bike a weapon in the right hands at the track. Enjoy the ride if you dare and don't try riding it to far as it doesn't get or have great fuel mileage.

    Awesome video and content! Yes more v rod videos please. Also I got a question that I can’t seem to get a direct answer from searching over the internet and TH-cam.
    ¿Which year night rod is best to get? ¿Also in what year did the night rod start to come with all the standard features of a 2017 model? Looking to get one and would want to know as much as possible before I get one

    • @GixxerFoo
      @GixxerFoo  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They made some changes here and there over the years, my biggest thing is getting the 1250 motor which came out in 2008. The still had conventional forks though, the inverted forks came started to appear in 2009 on the muscle I believe. For the Nightrod you'd be looking at 2012, from 2012 on they were unchanged other than color from year to year. 1250 engine and inverted forks 2012 to 2017.

      They were built in Kansas City with the Dyna and Sportster, just low sales and likely moving toward the Revolution Max platform. When they killed the Dyna it was the writing on the wall for the Kansas City plant. They just moved Sportster production up to York.
