    I've used this stuff as well and it works great. I was refurbishing an old bike and I had planned on using the old chain since it looked fine but after it went through the Evapo-Rust I could see tiny cracks on almost every link!! I got a new chain and was saved some unpleasantness.

    This stuff is amazing I highly recommend it. Other than a light brushing to get thru some thick rust it is the best. The gallon size is the best size to go with you can overhaul/restore a least 2 bikes.

    I tried this and it works great but it would be expensive to make a dunk tank for larger items, I cleaned up my chrome wheels with repeated spraying of wd40 and just let it set and for other chrome parts I used white vinegar (at $2.59 a gallon it was much cheaper) and let them soak for a couple of days wiping them each day and it worked great. RJ, thanks as always for the video! I have read some posts that recommend to plug the bottom bracket and bottle mount holes...and then fill the bike frame (via the seat tube) with this stuff to remove all the inner-tubing rust. My question is, If I have a slightly rusted bottom bracket threads and I flood Evapo-rust in down the seat tube...will I risk any damage to the BB threads? Thanks for any help/clarification you can provide!

    • @RJTheBikeGuy
      @RJTheBikeGuy  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Paul Kreugel Yes, I have used vinegar and no, it doesn't do the same job. Vinegar will do weird stuff to the metal if you leave it in too long. And it doesn't inhibit the rust from coming back, so you need to oil the metal or something to keep it from rusting. This stuff works way better.

    I'm wondering if you've ever gave electrolysis a try? It uses regular water, some Arm and Hammer LAUNDRY soda, and a plastic tub. Uses two electrodes and for small parts like those on a bike one of the electrodes could be a metal screen. I use a 12V DC power supply at about 4 amps (car battery charger is fine) and it can do what your process did in a couple of hours. Only issue with electrolysis is it produces hydrogen gas so it's always advisable to do it outside. I've done plenty of rusty bikes parts and the results compare favorably to those you got with Evapo Rust. I'm not sure how expensive a bottle of that stuff is but the laundry soda is pretty cheap and only a little is used each time. The waste is fine for the environment and could just be poured out anywhere.
    There are a bunch of how-to's for this process on TH-cam as well.

    • @RJTheBikeGuy
      @RJTheBikeGuy  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Don B About $22/gallon. But gallon is good for up to 300lbs of rust metal.

    • @radiolabworks
      @radiolabworks 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      RJ The Bike Guy Does it get diluted? If your doing bigger items, and there is no diluting, I'd suspect then you'd need to get creative on the tub sizing. I just did a chromed fork using electrolysis and I probably used 5 gallons of water (required a larger tub to hold the length of the fork) with a cup of laundry soda (25 cents worth if that). In about three hours all the rust was gone. This old method might still be a viable alternative - or at least a cheaper alternative. Thanks RJ

    • @RJTheBikeGuy
      @RJTheBikeGuy  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Don B The mention that if the stuff evaporates some, you can add water to it. 25 cents of laundry soda and a $50 battery charger?

    • @radiolabworks
      @radiolabworks 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      RJ The Bike Guy I'm always envious of your bike finds via CL or thrift-shops in your area RJ. Here in the Chicago-Milwaukee corridor I very rarely find such deals as you do. The same deals can apply to a power supply needed for electrolysis. I often see old CB radio home DC power supplies at garage sales, etc. for $5 or less (often with the CB radio in tow). Those can do 12VDC @ 4A (check spec label when purchasing) and are perfect for electrolysis. The same is true for old car battery chargers.
      Thanks again for the info on the Evapo Rust as I may buy some to do single small components as I see that as a good use for me versus setting up the electrolysis system for one little part.

    • @RJTheBikeGuy
      @RJTheBikeGuy  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Don B I have read about the electrolysis process in the past. Have you tried Evapo Rust? This stuff is dead easy. Soak the parts, rinse, done. And I don't think you can leave the parts in there too long. Don't parts start to get damage if you leave the parts in there too long with electrolysis?

      It's about $20-25/gallon here. But a gallon lasts a while because you can use the stuff over and over.

      Spray it with WD-40 or get a thin layer of lube on there afterwards will help.

    • @RJTheBikeGuy
      @RJTheBikeGuy  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      You did use Evaporust, right? If you used something like vinegar, I find rust comes back more easily.

    • @JohnSmith-yw4bh
      @JohnSmith-yw4bh 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      RJ The Bike Guy same here. I used evaporust after watching this. It came back on my cassette only. Maybe because I washed it with dish soap and rinse with water.

    • @RJTheBikeGuy
      @RJTheBikeGuy  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Alonzo broncano I got it locally at Tractor Supply. It is available online. Amazon.com has it. The Evapo Rust website has a search thing for distributors.

    Thanks a lot for your video ? Much safer way also is to wear a gloves and not to contaminate your hands with the chemical > good job.

      Evaporust is non-toxic. Vinegar can also be used to remove rust (though Evaporust does a much better job). Would you need to wear gloves with vinegar?

      +Dexter Leung Maybe. Vinegar might be better. I don't find it does as well of a job. The acid sometimes does weird stuff the the metals.

      Raman, I've used Rust Reformer and it works great. However, I can't always find it locally so I buy White Vinegar and it does a great job removing rust. Go to your local Food Store, buy White Vinegar, pour it into a pan/bucket and drop the rusty part in it. Ether let it sit, or agitate it with your hands or a brush. Inexpensive and it works.

    • @MrAristes
      @MrAristes 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry for the late reply. I've never had anything in vinegar for that long. Depending on how dilluted the vinegar is (we usually have 5% vinegar here on US shelves) it takes over a day for it to work anyway so I imagine 5 days or more won't be a problem. Put it in for a few days and check it twice a day.
