    In case you all were wondering, Eli Roth showed Cannibal Holocaust to the tribe that acted in the film to make sure they were okay with doing it. They were really excited to do it, and everyone was nice all around. So no, they didn’t exploit the natives into making themselves look bad.

      I personally wouldn't have any trouble seeing the tribe get wiped out by the corporate mercenaries. Perhaps, everyone is thinking on too grand a level. The only reason she survived was b/c that one girl helped her escape. She owed that girl her life. She knew if the corporate encroachment gets to the tribe, that girl is all but dead, so she sucked it up and let it be.

      @SBSP Calming Rain i don't think it's a matter of culture lol, kidnapping, murder, mutilation, and cannibalism are all wrong no matter what your culture is. justine deciding to lie and protect the tribe after everything was probably a commentary on the 'slacktivism' and black-and-white ideology that the movie is based around. even though the tribe brutally murdered and ate her friends and were going to mutilate her, she still chose to defend them when it was not deserved at all. i think it's pointing out a hypocrisy in the idea that indigenous tribes are all good. people can be oppressed and taken advantage of, murdered, targeted, etc. and also be bad people, the two aren't mutually exclusive and i think that was the point the movie was trying to make with her deciding to lie in the end. that a lot of 21st century 'slacktivists' don't see the nuance in social issues and would rather boil it down to 'this group good' and 'this group bad' even though it's a lot more complicated than that. both the tribe and the construction development are doing things that are morally wrong.

    This movie was brutal. I definitely wasn't expecting it to be as graphic and violent as it was. The scene where the guy gets his eyes gauged out and his limbs cut off was insane. Okey so here's the story :
    Eli Roth (director of hostel) wanted to make his own cannibal film and also a kind of tribute to the "1980s cannibal bloom" (cannibal movies were very popular at that time) this was all because of 1980's "cannibal holocaust" and the popularity it got because of being known as a " snuff film " . So he made this

    Eli does set pieces like no one else in the genre. He had the opportunity to make a horror allegory for the ages but took his foot off of the accelerator once Jonah’s graphic death was over. It is a nod to the Italian cannibal nasties of the 1980s in some ways. But this had so much potential to be unforgettable. But the nihilism he needed to drive it home was absent.
    The weed stoning the entire village was hilarious though. But the pay off was even bigger.

  • @jacobmayer8916
    @jacobmayer8916 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    What I like about Eli Roth is that he knows how to give his movies tension and anxiety, the stakes feel real (probably because his movies look realistically brutal). But I agree that the acting could have been better

    To answer your question why Justine didn't reveal what the tribe really did, I think it's because she was trying to protect that one child who freed her. Because if Justine reported and if a team was sent to slaughter the village, that child would die.

This movie was one of the few that made me CRINGE throughout. I would highly recommend Martyrs. That film is also brutal.

  • @tonic3898
    @tonic3898 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    I actually think the part where she says there was no violence or cannibalism is well-sensed. The point of her joining the activism was to protect them, and ultimately, she did. The reason she protected the tribe by not telling about their cannibalism is probably because they don't know if they were cannibals UNTIL people came to their village and started killing them with guns. Also the reason the tribe attacked the activists is because they were WEARING THE SAME YELLOW JACKETS that their enemies were wearing - the bulldozer company. It makes sense if you think about it. She spared them by not telling of their brutal ways because after all, the people that were there clearing the rainforest were their enemies and they deserved it if they were just killing them and destroying their land. We don't know for certain they were cannibals outside of the fact that they were getting revenge on the invaders that threatened their way of life.

And the tribal acted the way how they acted

    I don't need to tell everyone this but oh well.
    When I was 13, a buddy of mine who was 12, showed me a video his aunt had sent him of two American PoWs being beheaded by the taliban. This was in 2003, long before fake videos were popular. Anyway, this was the first time I had ever seen anything that traumatic and I suffered from nightmares for months - haunted by the screams of the men in that video.
    Over the years, I've seen some pretty fucked up shit, both IRL and on the internet so when I decided to check this movie out, I went in confident despite knowing what it was about and how gruesome it was. I was wrong. The scene with Jonah brought back those memories and I almost stopped watching despite knowing it wasn't real. Just imagining what it would be like to witness something like that or even be the victim of it fucks with me. One thing I don't get is why he wouldn't have died from shock - like, I'd hope my body would immediately be like "Yeah, you're not gonna wanna be awake/alive for this. Time to go night night." Was it the shit they made him drink just before or what?
    Knowing that shit has happened before and likely continues to happen just... no bueno.
    There truly are fates worse than death.

    Hahaha a very disturbing film indeed. I suggest that you react to Apocalypto as well .....it's also brutal but it has a more engaging and intruiging story. Sometimes I wonder why this film is slept as it is one of the best movies of the last two decades of

    Cannibals cannot be reasoned with but many have died to them as they tried to teach them modern ways, this movie is funnily realistic

    Hi folks !
    I have always been a fan of films in general especially thrillers/ horror films .
    I certainly noticed the acting from the cast which was poor in places especially the cannibals who seemed vague in what they were supposed to be doing at certain points of the film.
    But on a plus side the gore was in bucket loads and pretty graphic which you would expect from such a movie.
    Overall not too bad but as stated the acting could of been better.

    I think it’s an homage to the movie Cannibal Holocaust (I think I’m not sure). But I’m that movie, there’s the same concept of a group of college kids go into the jungle, but instead of getting killed off, the collage kids terrorize the villagers and rape the woman and burn their huts. So in the movie Caninal Holocaust, the point of it was to show that Americans are worse than these so-called “village savages”. This is all just speculation, but I’m pretty sure that’s why the girl at the end tries to save the villagers. Idk I could be wrong
