    One omission in the piece would be the WW2 B-Uhr/ Luftwaffe watches. The design is seen today in lots of manufacturers watches as well as faithful reproductions. The whole German watchmaking industry produced them, including A.Lange

    1. Lange, Laco, Stowa & Wempe for B Uhr flieger
    2. The first GMT pilot : Glycine Airman...Rolex gmt wasn’t the first
    Anyway, love your vid!!

      @@simplyvintagewatches5349 It's interesting because TGV just did a Rant video on how many watch source (magazines) do sponsored content for the big brands (Rolex). It seems like Watchbox studies, where TGV works now, may be doing the same by omitting the relevance of Glycine Airman, as well as German brands like Laco and Stowa

    You forgot the Tutima and Hanhardt pilots chronographs of the 30s. Tutima sold over 30,000 of them mainly to the military and Steve McQueen wore a Hanhardt before the Daytona. Then there were the B-Uhr style watches built for the RLM specifications which many of the modern pilot watches take their styling ques from. These were produced by the likes of A. Lange & Sohne and IWC who carried the look forward with their Mark series for the British. And we can't forget the French who came up with their own military avation specification, type 20 (XX) in the early 50s. Several manufactures provided these, among them Dodane, Breguet , and Zenith (rainbow El Primero). I believe the pattern is still in use by Doudane and Breguet. Of course there were a series of NATO approved pilot watches in the 50s, 60, 70s from the likes of Sinn, Tutima, Fortis that are based on the Lemania 5100 movement . It's a large topic to cover in 7 minutes! I haven't mentioned the astronaut/moon watches, that's it's own topic and not really avation.
    I''m sure I missed something but it's a start.

    Very cool video. I especially like the comparison you gave between the "first watch for a pilot" and the "first pilot watch"; spot on! It should have been worth to mention the watches that were used by the Wright brothers, Wiley Post, and Charles Lindbergh. Also, some mention about the merging between "pilot watches" and combat watches". Pilotsthat were shot down in combat required a watch that could withstand ground combat conditions in order to survive, escape and evade.

      Leandro Limeres not relevant how? Is it because you don’t want to recognize that I’m correct? Seriously everyone knows the Wright Brothers were first. Your comment has no purpose, it’s just incorrect, misinformation.

    • @vtwinbuilder3129
      @vtwinbuilder3129 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Leandro Limeres look what you said, you said he invented the airplane. That’s patently false. The Wright Brothers invented the first airplane as theirs was the first to take flight under its own power. That’s an airplane, we aren’t talking gliders or anything else. You’re just wrong, no matter what, then statement you made is incorrect . That’s all there is to it and it’s laughable that you’d think your incorrect answer would somehow stand to “correct” someone else. You’re clearly not very well versed on the subject matter in this case at all.

    How on earth do we miss out the big 5 producers and the Beobachtungsuhr or B-Uhren watches. The 55mm case sizes started much earlier here too, you only have to look at the dates for the a type and b type watches. For this we need to talk about Laco, Stowa, IWC, Wempe and A Lange and Sohne.
    It is absolutely wrong and crazy to miss out all of these manufacturers and to not speak of the a and b types and just leap from the early years into a much nearer modern time. I mean hoe can we even consider pilot watches without regard to the Baumuster b? To not speak of these watches and their requirements inclusive of factors like the lack of branding and high legibility etc.
    The history is the history.
    P.S
    And technically these were observation and therfore navigator's watches, rather than for the Pilot, but in your video you have got hung up on "pilot" rather than aviation.
