Very early into the video he talks about the amount climbing and decending , You literally see him climb, I own a 2019 ST 29er and it climbs great , I have hurd some people whinge but I personally think it climbs great... How ever i wasn't born into wealth and haven't been riding expensive mountain bikes my whole life so I don't really have anything else to compare it to
I think you will find upon examination that this bike, like all Specialized bikes, will have great specs for the S-Works and a mishmash of parts all the way down to the cheapest bike.
Removal of the proprietary shizzle is excellent! Looking at you on the bike, one of the things that appeals to me is the apparent slenderness of the upper linkages of the suspension. I find that a lot of current Boost spaced frames are extremely cumbersome near the upper linkages, increasing heel rub and even calf rub, which is pretty disconcerting.
I find it funny that people are criticizing these guys for reviewing a high-end bike. I am sure that part of Specialized strategy is to take back some of the upper end market share that has been taken away by all the boutique brands out there. I am not in the bike business but that is my thought anyway. And yes, every now and then someone actually buys one of these things I bet. Another benefit of these flagship bikes is the trickle down effect. Eventually some of this technology ends up on a $3000 bike.
I bought the 29r carbon comp version of this bike. I couldn’t be happier. It’s not an elite enduro bike nor is it the worlds best climber but it does everything very well. It’s a very responsive bike that you feel welded to and it is so much fun to push hard into corners. In my opinion it’s best on rolling terrain as it keeps its speed incredibly well. I love it.
I could not find a rear shock that measure 210x52.5mm DPX2 or Super deluxe in my 2019 Stjmpjumper Comp Alloy 27.5. Would like to know if the 210x50mm or 210x5mm would fit in my bike. Thank you! 😊
have been on the 27.5, 2016 stumpy. at 5'9" have felt a tad crammed on a medium frame. Wondering how these ones size up. I would like to get into a 29er this year. Every review I have come across says to size up. Would you agree with this?
I got the 27.5 M base model which has a reach of 444 and head tube angle of 66.5. I sawpedt the fork for a 29er fox 36 with 150mm front and rear given the fact that is a it's reach is shorter than the evo version do you think this is a bit of a compromise in geometry to slacker this bike a bit with the new 29er fork do do have any advice for me
Hey jack. Great review. I’ve really got my heart set on and Evo version. I’m Worried though it’s a little ‘too’ progressive. Is it purely reserved for bike park style Laps at full throttle or will it cope with some Pedalling and trail centre style rides? Would it still be fun?
I'm 99% guessing the answer is yes. If you look at the older Stumpy (and Enduro, and Camber) frames, they were already close to this with people trying and succeeding at putting larger tires on there than Spesh recommended. Also some other companies have already done this as well (Ibis, Salsa, etc).
No, that info is not correct from the specialized dealers I have spoken with. 2.8 is the widest 29" tire and the short travel apparently cannot fit tires that wide. 2.6 tires are spec'd from the factory on all but the short travel, it is spec'd with 2.3 tires.
According to the press kit I received, all bikes including the 29" models will fit tyres up to 3.0" wide. However, you are correct about the tyre spec on the short travel bikes.
Jack Luke I received that press kit as well, I am sure you are referring to page 16 of 28. The dealers that have them on the showroom floor are saying they will only fit up to 2.8 however and it looks tight at that. I am talking to my contact at specialized to see what he says is the official word. This is why I didn't yet release my video on the 2019 SJ. Hopefully it is 3.0, but since specialized does not yet have a 29 x 3.0 tire, I hope this also means they tested it with a prototype 29x3 tire that they also plan to release this year. We shall see.
So bummed, just bought a 2018 SJ Expert with carbon rims at the end of November last year. Between this crazy winter and work, I only rode it once so far. Now the 2019 is being shown...wish I had waited :(
Not thrilled about the shock being mounted to the top tube. Extra reinforcement and weight to do that. I prefer the concept that is used in the new Scott Genius 7 and 9 series with the rocker arm and trunion mount shock. Makes a lot more sense to me.
Giant does the same thing. I'm no engineer, and I own a Camber with the shock on the top, but I agree that in theory mounting it closer to the bottom bracket could...
That's the way Scott argues. Important for us riders is the final weight-stiffness-ratio, not the way it has been achieved by the manufacturer. In theory, Scott's rear end system should have poor flex and lateral stiffness because of the horizontally oval shape of the chain stays. In reality, however, it works good - thats what counts.
He is, of course, referring to the asymmetric design, which was on the Rallon first. However, I agree that the Stumpy is much more iconic, original, and probably a better bike, than the Rallon.
Ultimate trail bike ? useless comment unless you prove it after comparing to santa cruz, intense, kona, trek, scott, Yeti, transition ibis and many other great names. I wonder why I hear it every time that they launch a new stumpjumper. Actually since they change all the time rear suspension position and travel (5 times in the last decade) means they are not happy consistently, not like Giant for example ! Another comment - if you ride 3 days you don't need to say all the time "they claim", you need to say your opinion if its true or not, sadly It feel like you work for specialized sorry ! Just to say I have been a Specialized client in the past years, owned mostly StumpJumper, but felt that they lost the way, so move to other boutique brands.
As always: if it doesn't say so in the description in plain english then no money has changed hands. We wouldn't accept sponsorship on this type of video under any circumstances.
Bit bitey there bikeradar 😂 this is the TH-cam comment section where everyone is a cynical, argumentative professional on every subject. No point in feeding the trolls, just keep what you’re doing.
And they hold there value! Unlike a mtb, unloading a 3 year old mtb even top specd, is like trying sell leprosy. Non Boost is now the new 26. No one wants it!
This is a very weird move from SPECIALIZED. I have been a Specialized client for the past years, owned the Enduro, StumpJumper and the Camber. This is what I am perceiving from this called " New Technology/Geometry" They are offering now 2 bikes in one. Since the Camber and StumpJumper shared the same frame, only main differences were-in rear travel and boost rear on The Stumpy and 142mm + on the Camber, my believe is, the Camber will be no longer in production, since now the New StumpJumper offers you different options for travel. Now, I have seen mistakes done by Specialized already, as an example on the Enduro 2017, the year that was suppose to be revamped from prior models, which they did, they came out with the all new Enduro, they changed it again for the Enduro 2018....How is that? Why? not only in the geometry, but also in the look of it. (Do your own research) So whoever bought the Enduro 2017, got stock with it. Specialized came out with a series of stage answer on why they did this, pretty lame and a semi insult for the consumers. Now with the new StumpJumper, yes you can see the difference between the pro models 2018/2017/2016 .... but now we have a New StumpJumper looking like the ORBEA RALLON, which they came out with this model before than Specialized. So I ask my self, What's new about this technology that is nowhere around? "Specialized advertisements" They are throwing a campaign on the internet and with their authorized retailers " The New Game Changer" get this, buy this we have it" This is not true innovation, neither game changing. Yes it is a different bike from your prior model, looks different, yes, but this is misleading the consumer into buying something that has been out there since before. I really beige a company with this dimensions should have better product designers engineering, where they can come out the the new technology, meeting the numbers in geometry and having a unique shape, looks, curves, concave lines. I checked the reaction on Pro Riders Jared Graves and Curtis from Specialized when they were testing the New StumpJumper last year and I did not get from them they were happy or satisfied about the bike. They are not actor, they are humans, right? so they were very flat about it. I know they cannot throw dirt on the changes since they are sponsored and they need to support the brand no matter what, but there is a difference when some one is surprise and when not. Specialized will start selling like a hot bread the New Stumpy, that's how the marketing works. But do I really like an StumpJumper looking as the ORBEA RALLON or Vice versa?...... Specialized, there a lot of talent out there, great product designers and engineers that will truly innovate not only you r line of bikes but also the industry, look for them, be legit about what you offer, don't just sell what first comes in to your mins as a company. This is a copy and paste move, don't be lazy specialized!!!!!! this is the robe link:www.orbea.com/us-en/brands/rallon/ and this is the links for the pro riders: th-cam.com/video/uBrMQQ0mERk/w-d-xo.html This is an invitation to become a more aware about our purchase. As always: if it doesn't say so in the description in plain english then no money has changed hands. We wouldn't accept sponsorship on this type of video under any circumstances.
Your reach/stack argument is disingenuous at best. Why would you want the same high bar height as this on a different bike? What if you want a lower bar height than this bike? (like the Specialized team riders seem to). How would you lower a bar height on a bike with a longer than average head tube? Is slamming the stem on this bike going to result in a longer than stated reach number??? Using your logic of bar width you might say, "make the head tube short as you can always run more spacers of higher rise bars, you can't lower a longer head tube".....
gweflj I think you've misunderstood what Jack was saying. Basically, because the head tube is sloped, the higher the head tube is, the shorter the reach is on paper. That's because reach is measured to the top of the head tube. If the bike had a shorter head tube, the reach would be longer on paper, but once you had set up your bars to your preferred height, the length of the cockpit would feel exactly the same. In other words, the tall head tube makes the on-paper reach figure look shorter than it really feels. If the large had a 110mm head tube instead of 140mm, the on-paper reach would be around 10mm longer, but with another 30mm of stem spacers, it would feel the same. On the other hand, more spacers introduces more flex, but a taller head tube limits how low the bar height can go.
No, I totally get what he was saying. He's arguing that the long head tube and high stack should excuse the at least 10mm too short reach on these bikes. Even then that would barely make them average in length. I'm talking 29" here which is 125mm head tube on a large. When has a 29" with a 150mm fork and low BB needed a high stack height??? Nice details on these bikes but the sizing is dated and I"m not in anyway a Geometron/Pole sizing guy. Go check the Vital vid of Graves testing. Flipped stem and slammed on a medium... Keene's large is also slammed in his latest Instagram pics.
I hate a threaded bottom bracket.... Bonding an insert into a carbon frame and screwing in bearing cups with externally positioned bearings is moronic engineering.
Thanks for this very thorough review. I’ve ordered the alloy comp!
reviewing the most expensive, specced-out versions of bike models is less useful to everyone than reviewing mid-specced versions of those models.
I guess Im pretty randomly asking but does anyone know a good site to watch newly released tv shows online?
@Cole Zev flixportal xD
Did you get a chance to ride the regular 27.5 version (i.e. not the EVO)? If so did you prefer the 27.5 or the 29?
Had my 2020 carbon comp 27.5 for a few weeks. I have zero complaints.

Isn't that they always do?
I think you will find upon examination that this bike, like all Specialized bikes, will have great specs for the S-Works and a mishmash of parts all the way down to the cheapest bike.
it has to do with what they put into making the frame and ride quallity

i've got a 27.5 enduro and it more than holds its own up AND down :)

Jay Mueller same...
I totally agree, thank you big S for threaded B.B., non proprietary parts and chunky fat tires.
$9500 !!! As much as I love my Stumpie that really is taking the piss for a bike?
I just got one, I love it.
So how does this bike compare to Canyon Spectral ?
63.5 on a 150mm travel bike... wow just wow! :)
That A-symmetric from the demo is also in the Orbea Rallon 17... What are the patent rules around these??
lol is there any patent on why bicycle has two wheels?
Orbea would owe Specialized a lot of money if it was patented
Yay for the price of a car you can get a bicycle

Best review so far.
"Plus tires up to 3" wide can be run on any Stumpjumper frame now regardless of wheel size".... Wait, so this thing accepts 29 plus?

Great review! Any issues with rear tire / seat stay brace clearance on the regular 29er? It looks minimal to me.
So, when they say the bikes can all fit 3” tires, does that mean that the 29’s can fit a 29x3” tire?!? That would be awesome if it were true!

I bet you hate puppies and ice cream too
gweflj I take it you aren’t an engineer? If you don’t like bonded parts why buy carbon? 😂 🤦♂️
Doesn't just apply to composites. The latter half of what I said applies to alloy frames with BSA.
Would you buy one?
