thank you for telling me at the end that the truck actually ran because I get this error code and my truck seems to run fine except sometimes getting a check engine light.

Great video. Same thing happening with my 1990 Bonneville. Didn't end up throwing code 42 until a week later. Took the ICM off and found a big crack in the rubber seal. I guess moisture was getting in over time and just finally started shorting out and making the vehicle stall. Going to change that out tonight and hopefully we'll be fixed.

Very helpful video. Just wanted to share this. While chasing my similar problem on a 94 gmc jimmy w engine code. I found my issue was the tan and black wire you disconnect while setting the timing. This vehicle only gets used in winter as a rural mail truck driven from passenger side. Years of wet feet on the carpet cause the connector to corrode and lose ability for timing to advance. Vehicle ran but poorly and chugged on hills really bad. So give that tan and black wire a good look...

A code 33 will cause a 42 code to set. The module starts the engine on base timing. When the rpm reach a certain amount the ecm will camaned control of timing. But if the map sensor causes a low idle problem the ecm thinks there something rong with the est. So it set a 33 and a 42 code. I know because I just got true fixing a 1995 gmc 4.3 with this problem.

    • @mbjdiy1778
      @mbjdiy1778  4 ปีที่แล้ว

Code 42 means the ECM has seen an open or short to ground in the EST or bypass circuits . What I see (read ) again WHAT I SEE is a double problem and your EST circuit is on the verge of failure too. That is my and only my opinion on that. Map rides on 416 ,432,455 wires to c14,c11,d2 ECM input--- EST rides on 423,430,424,453 to d4,b5,d5,b3 ECM input two totally different feads to ECM. This video is for truck up to 1987 with ECM and some a trucks a little after like my 1994 suburban was the same. I would refer to a Haynes manual of your year and model is you best bet. Good luck God bless and thank you for your comment- as usual -Works for me

Right those down... Then remove negative battery terminal for 15 minutes ... replace then drive around and see which one(s) come back then start diagnosing one at a time with the method used by Hanes or Chilton manual if 42 comes back I would do that first .....

Curious though, what is making the module overheat to the point where it fails? Could a bad ground somewhere in the truck could be causing this ? But great info .I didn't know auto stores could bench test the modules . Thanks again!

My 91 s10 never did turn light on, but jumping obd1 connector it shows up, First ignition module replacement was from driving on the hwy, everything good till went to pass someone, Then all hell break loose, no power with tremendous backfiring out the exhaust, really loud, pull over side of hwy and truck would just sit and idle pretty as could be till tried gas it, would go dead but start right back up, In dire strait's, I get Advanced ignition module, fixed truck,,, for little while, Then the hair pulling started, while cold truck runs slick as button till hot, from dead stop would start to accelerate and fall flat on its face, if AC on would go dead, replaced fuel pump, TPS sensor, coil, did the lean on and tap test on comp, with no check engine lamp, jumped obd1 connector and there was a 42, I have a delphi module ordered and crossing my fingers. will let know turn out. Personally, I believe everything from Advance or Autozone is complete garbage!

Thanks, I just got a code 42 in my 1991 Silverado, 350tbi already shot a small parts cannon at it, fuel filter, iac valve(sooted up), fuel pressure regulator rebuild(spring rusted and broke), cap, wires and plugs, and new screens on the injectors, timing checked. Fpr kit from Summit(house kit), all other parts from Rock Auto and all AC/DELCO. As of this post...delco icm ordered for my daily. What confused the hell out of me was that it starts and revs fine....just dies at stop or drop in gear. This has to work, lol.

Yeah i had to wait for that code to go solid to fix this part. EGR went bad shortly after that fix ... I think the bad Idle when it would also damaged my EGR - works for me - Good luck God bless ... watch your EGR for possible failure also after fixing the other.

Signs of a Bad Ignition Module
      1. Acceleration Issues. The vehicle may shake, vibrate or jerk when the gas pedal is pressed.
      2. There may be hesitation or lack of power during increases in speed.
      3. Temperature Problems. A faulty ignition module can cause a vehicle to overheat. ...
      4. No Power. The engine may turn over without starting.

I just had this code come up on my 92 Cavalier. My ICM and one coil recently went out so I replaced them and the car ran fine for a couple hundred miles and then the CEL came on and set the code 42. I did the same tests that were in your flow chart since the factory Cavalier service manual flow chart was the same. I tested circuit 423 and 424 and ruled out the ECM as the problem but now I'm not sure if there is a wiring problem or the new ICM has a problem. None of our local auto parts store checks ICM's anymore so I have no way of checking it. Any advice?

Call a reputable Chevrolet dealer parts department and either get the OEM part number or buy it through them ( I bought an aftermarket and it failed about a minute after install)you must also check your manual that 42 is the same code as trucks . some codes vary - good luck works for me

@@mbjdiy1778 I used an AC Delco module quite a few years ago and it didn't last. The one that has lasted the longest in the 14 years I've owned the car was a Borg Warner one which lasted about 99,000 miles. They no longer carry it and is why I got the Standard brand.

You short together the upper right 2 pins on the data link connector at the base of the dash under the steering wheel. U will see a obd 1 connector mounted to the bottom of the nee bolster at about nee level. Cross upper right pins then turn on the ignition to the run position then watch the service engine soon light it will Flash 1 then 11 then if there's any codes you will count the lights as they Flash after the 1 11 signal is given. Example flash ,flash flash . It will do this 3 times. Then u will see any codes after that. Example flash flash flash flash. Flash flash =42

It will do this 3 times before showing codes. After u will see example flash flash flash flash -- pause -flash flash =42.
