- I hope this helps out anybody who would like to know more about shrimp and shrimp keeping. Water changes are one of the hardest things to figure out when you first start.

Your information is precise and concise. I like how you did not waste our time with information such as how to pour water back into the tank. Some ppl on TH-cam will make that step into another 30 minute part!

I use to mix my water and right after, till I heard everyone saying let it dissolve a day using an air stone, after doing this and testing it I realized my TDS was higher than when I first mixed it, so I stopped adding it in the tank right away. Love your videos by the way!

Glad to know Prime is safe for shrimps. The water has a sulfuric smell when you use Prime.
People won't like this comment but here I go and it's from years of experience. Tap water will not kill all the bacteria in your sponge filter. You can take one sponge and leave the other and absolutely clean it under tap water. It gets it so much cleaner and is so much easier. It leaves more than enough bacteria and also promotes new bacteria as the older it is the less it performs it's actually slower at doing its job. I have actually cleaned both sponges and not even had a slight bacterial bloom. It's not possible to remove enough bacteria under the tap lol or all hospitals would be using tap water only to cleanse anyway I'm not telling anybody they must do it my way I'm just saying it's over hyped the tap water thing.
Hi there yes even I often end up using tap water kept overnight for cleaning and water change. But then it would vary from place to place.. some of the places do have a lot of chlorine and chloramines in their water. The water literally reeks of it. So "tap-water" isnt a standard term with fixed parameters. That's my thought.
I agree that it won't kill off all the bacteria. I just don't do it as the chlorine in my tap is very high. I can still smell it after my RO unit. It's why i add the prime.

I bought 7 Crystal Reds about 9 months ago and although I've seen some young ones, I don't seem to see that many around in my tank.
I do have quite a few plants and driftwood but the most I can count at any one time is about 11.
I found my nitrates were around 40ppm and was told they need to be around 10ppm, so to do water changes in my 50 litre tank, I remove about 8 litres and add RO water back around 500ml at a time every few hours (takes a day or so).
I was told to do this to avoid sudden changes although I don't kniw if they meant changes in temperature, nitrates, or dome other variable.
I don't specifically feed them as the tank as 10 Harlequin Rasboras and a Bristlenose so there's daily feeding of flakes plus twice weekly I put in algae wafers and zucchini slices. I also occasionally put in an Indian Almond leaf.
Parameters are: pH 6.6; Ammonia and nitrite 0; nitrate currently coming down from 40ppm (target will be 10), GH 5; KH 1; TDS 196 and temp 23.7°c (74.6°f).
I saw in another video of yours that you have temp around 20°c.
Suggestions to help get my population to explode?

Hi! Your videos are so educational. Just a quick question sir, if I do a water change on a crystal red tank, do i need to achieve a range of 130 TDS on that new water to be added to tank? What if my tank is already at 130ish and i will do a 20% water change. Thanks a lot!
Do you ever gravel vac your shrimp tanks? The RO water is probably PH 7.0 and your caridina tank is probably lower. Do you rely on the substrate to lower the PH? And won't that use up the substrate faster? Great video...Thanks!

I have had some shrimp die after a water change, and believe this may be 'shock death' due to water differences such as temperature. I'm wondering how I can easily condition my water to match that of the tank before adding it and/or adding it slowly like a drip or trickle feed, or similar?
Do u know if accu clear from api is good or bad to add to a cherry shrimp tank?
My version of water changes is alot easier, no getting temp up or anything. Next door to my shrimp is a goldfish tank at same temperature as shrimp tank so I drain roughly a bucket of water from shrimp tank then drain water from goldfish tank (already matured) into shrimp tank and my shrimp and plants are doing really really well.
I need to make it simpler but....I find lugging jugs around keeps me healthy or I just sit here all day.
@@SooShrimpBreeders I had another cunning plan too as far as plants go I have a small 360 complete marine aquarium, roughly 10g but I decided it was for shrimp. It has a internal micro waterfall filter inside with integrated led lighting so to stop shrimplets getting in I put a stocking(ladies tights) over the filter upto the waterfall stopping underneath it. I then proceeded to put plants using aquascaping glue affixed to the tights hiding most of filter but saving function. Works great the suction passes water with nutrients past plants base feeding said plants which within a week grew exponentially and the cherry shrimp, snails 🐌 and water slaters all work together to keep tank clean but also waste feeds Marino moss and other plants perfectly. Maybe try something simular. Couldn't use sponge filter cos of the shape of tank unfortunately

Could you explain the caridina breeding chart in a video? How to mix them properly? I want to start a breeding project soon but it's all very confusing and a little overwhelming. My end goal for my person project is galaxy shrimp

Nice video The question I have is I have this one tank the TDS is 200 I want it to be 130 so when I add my salts to the new Ro water should I make it less than 130 or should I just do water charges once a week to get the TDS down ? Or could I lower it by just using RO water with no remineraliser just water ?
i would add pure RO water until it's what you want. I have a few that i let go for a month or two and the tds was around 160. I just added pure 0 tds ro water until i got it back to 125.

I really don't understand one thing though. Do you match the new RO water by adding enough Salts to make the TDS of the new water to match the same current TDS in the tank, or no?

You didn't show how you match new water temperature with the tank water temperature. Do you do that in some way? Also, do you worry about the Ph and Gh of the new watter matching the tank? Thanks. Going to get some shrimp again and hopefully with the new tips I've learned since last time, they'll have a good chance of surviving.
so you don't need RODI :O? you only need RO? mine comes out at around 6 TDS. would that be ok

Needs more gh for them to molt well, kh needs to be higher so that there's little to no ph fluctuations and ph shld be high 6-7s. To be honest your water fits caridina shrimp if you use aqua soil which buffers and keeps kh low and prevents ph fluctuations
Is it okay to keep a lidless tank? I love the look of a drift wood sticking out above a tank but I’m not sure if shrimps can climb out of it and fall to their deaths. Some people say yes and some people say they won’t. So I’m very confused.
just try to not make any easy climb out points. They will climb out they are dumb. I have a few lidless tanks.

Yup even after my RO unit i still smell it. So i always add it as a secondary precaution.
I’ve been told even an RO/DI won’t remove chloramine which a lot of places are adding into tap water now
Just use the prime guys. Better safe than sorry.
You dont need to drip acclimate the water back in? I keep hearing that if you dont they will die, and from my experience they have been shocked and start swimming around like crazy. I am having difficulties drip acclimating them however, what are your thoughts?
I gravel vacuumed yesterday, and even with a nylon over the intake, I was sucking up teeny tiny shrimplets. Is there a magic trick that I don't know about? I fear that I am throwing dozens out with the dirty water. They hide in the "silt" dirt, and I can't seem to get it clean without them being sucked up too.
How much food would you recommend feeding a small colony of cherry shrimp? (~50-60)
i would feed once a day and some powdered if you have babies. i skip random days if i feel they don't need food.

I have a 12 liter/ 3 gallon desktop fish tank, that I have red cherry shrimp in. My question is how many shrimp can the tank have, before it gets too crowded? Also can I use it as a small breeder tank. I have another fish tank with, 25-30 ember tetras and an ancistrus couple and 15-25 red cherry and blue cherry shrimp. It seems that the shrimp in bigger tank are doing better than the ones in the smaller tank. I also heard that salt is good if you want to breed shrimp? I seem to loose a couple of shrimp now and then, whether it's of old age or because of the water parameters is bad I don't know. I do a 3rd of water change every week in the 3 gallon tank and I add some little salt also. I should also mention that both tanks are heavily planted. Thanks for the great video
you can have lots of shrimp in one tank. I had around 2500 in a 33 gallon. Lots of plants and the tank become self stable.
why do i lose a shrimp a day? all parameters are perfect?
Is ten percent weekly on a twenty long too much? I have a lot of moss in that tank along with duckweed to keep things stable

Very nice presentation & I like how it really does work as a basic guide to all (fresh) water changes, not just neos, but shrimp & non shrimp well (fish, amphibians, etc). These steps will work for freshwater changes in general; maybe axolotl don't need the salts & maybe (certain) cichlids need a calcium source, but the general steps that you follow ensure this video is going on the playlists of hobbyists, novices & other educators.

Do you ever have a random shrimp die after a water change ? And are you not letting the new mineralized water sit for 24hrs before adding to tank ?
I don't let it sit anymore. I usually don't have any random shrimp deaths anymore. Colonies are large so they usually the eat the dead.

I have a question since I am new to caridina shrimp and I watch many videos on water changes😅.
When I read up on caridina Taiwan bees, the guys say the gh must be 3-4.my tank gh is 4.
So my question is when I do a water change and say I add the gh+ salts to get a tds of 140 and do a test for the gh, it is way higher than 4, will that not increase the gh of my tank which would be out of the range for them... Just wanted to know if someone could explain or help me on this.... Cause if I just go by the tds like in this video I think my life will be much easier 😭
I wouldn't try to get that perfect number....get to as close as you can and leave it

When I do my water changes I do not use RO water. My well water comes out 30 to 40 TDS. I have a time keeping my TDS up in my tanks.🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿
Looks like you need to add a little salt to your well water. My tap is 78 but i still run it through an RO unit. I should try to just use tap water with prime and salts.

To be honest I dunno....I've heard distillers can use copper to distill and copper is bad for shrimp. I have not one clue tho only rumors
I'm using a external filter should I change to sponge filter...
If it's not broken don't fix it but sponge filters are amazing. If you have shrimp it's also free constant food
I would always just clean it and never replace.
You can also just add a sponge to the intake of the filter and it will act the same as have a sponge filter. I use hang on back filters in some of my shrimp tanks and they feed on the intake sponges.

Mirai Noha If your water and substrate is clean, there shouldn’t be any worms in the first place. Clean your tank, or add a fish.
Nathan, can I ask if shrimp are OK on a sand substrate? Most of your tanks seem to have a gravel substrate and it set me wondering if I was OK with sand.

my neo tanls have thousands of shrimp and breed prolificly 2 tanks sand 1 tank ada and 1 tank mixed sand and ada biggest difference ive seen is ease of cleaning debrie ph seems to vary slightly from tank to tank For Me
I've had my 10 gal set up for ~3 months and the water is greenish cloudy. I do weekly water changes, but it's not as clear as yours :(. Is there any way to fix this?
Duckweed. Load it up. Just my opinion. I use it and never get algae .
130 ppm gets me in the high 6 GH figures, I get it in the 105 ppm range which keeps it on the low GH 6's, would that be an issue?
Some of my more sensitive shrimp i do keep in the lower TDS but for most people 130 is a nice starting spot for most all caridina.

my mosura shrimps seems okay but i know its not good for warm condition (i am in tropical weather ocean)... i plan to make a peltier for 2 tank... but... i am not using such a shrimps soil...
i am using peat moss and volcanic sand... is it okay ? i am using alot peat... untill PH is 5.7... everynight i am wondering how if the peat stop leeching... T.T and always worry if 1 of my mosura tribe is dead in the morning...

I would like to use soil for my root feeding plants in my aquarium but I really would like to breed shrimp there too. Is there a solution to this dilemma?
My shrimp tank is a walstad inspired tank with a potting soil substrate 2 inches thick capped with sand. How come you believe this isn't possible? I'm happy to help. My tanks also on the window sill and I can control how much sunlight it gets 😀
Everybody recommends using inert substrate instead of organic since it may affect the pH of the water column. I just want to breed some cherry shrimp in a heavily planted tank, which would likely require CO2 injection and organic substrate, both of which may lower the pH as far as I read. That was why I thought it would be difficult to keep/breed cherry shrimps there... I hope this makes sense....
i may test a tank of potting soil to see how long it can keep the PH down and how long it lasts. Maybe put a few culls in there to see how they do.

It's the exact same process for me but I use beeshrimp KH and GH+ it's the same company. And the tds goes to 225

I find it hard to keep the TDS down... I dont really feed my shrimp often, maybe once every 2-3 days... and even then its just a small amount. But my TDS can go from 160-180 in a week..... (10g tank).
sometimes things in the tank can cause the TDS to rise. Random rocks perhaps? lava rock?
@@SooShrimpBreeders hmmmm I do have one big rock in there, not too sure what it is... Just googled lavarock and its nothing like that. I also have a few shells in there, not sure if they were a good idea...

Dear Nathan, I love your channel a lot !! I have been into Shrimp Keeping from 2017. Mostly breeding Fire Reds and Sakuras .. and selling them locally in Kolkata, India. Strangely I find a lot of similarity in your ways.. like the white bucket and water change frequency.. and some other stuff that you do in these videos. These videos are really helpful. However I would like to know your thoughts about Seed Shrimps / Ostracods in the shrimp tank if you have encountered any that is. Thanks :)
when i get more room i will have a few fun tanks. As of now i'm trying to keep only my favorite shrimp. I have a bunch of tanks sitting in another room waiting for projects.
Using something like Prime on UO Water has zero effect, it just costs money.
The stuff that these water conditioners remove or bind is not in UO water.
Glasrandkante couple videos ago he specifically explained that he does this just incase his RO machine malfunctions better to be safe than sorry

no wonder you fear water changes, dumping it into the tank!, even if you get the same temperature and tds as the tank, there is the ph shock!, the prepared ro water is likely neutral, your tank water is likely acidic, if you were to drip the water change into the tank like the we do drip acclimation there would be no ph shock because the soil has time to buffer it, since i do it that way, I stopped losing shrimp and babies, and do frecuent water changes with no fear
