    Love your videos Mark! A quick question, I have a 20long aquarium for my red cherry shrimp. They have plenty of moss, wood and plants in the tank. The tank is fully matured but for some reason they are not thriving, surviving yes but no luck with a big population. My city tap water comes out at 135 to 140 tds. Do you think that maybe just using an rodi water and adding GH would be better? Thats one thing Ive never tried. My current tds is around 210. Thanks for your response.

    • @MarksShrimpTanks
      @MarksShrimpTanks  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      yes you probably will do better with RO but you will need a gh/kh buffer too, I use salty mineral gh kh buffer, before you do that though I would get some test strips and test your water and see what it says, also make sure you are using a dechlorinator like prime/safe because I know of a lot of great neo breeders that breed more shrimp than I do on tap water.

    • @MarksShrimpTanks
      @MarksShrimpTanks  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No I do but I tell most people not too, I make my water in a very specific way to match tanks and I also drip the water back in a lot of new people dont do this so its always best to tell them not to do a water change when they see a berried girl, especially someone thats using tap water. I just did a 25% water change, switched to RO water and using salty shrimp mineral with aged water and prime. My neos are finally more active and all eating and swimming. All parts finally coming together, definitely not as easy as fish!
    Can I ask. What does aging the RO water do?? it seems to really have helped my tank just leaving it for 24 hours. I already started aging the water for next week for top ups/ water changes, I've noticed a HUGE difference in my neos.

    • @Captons.Skrimps
      @Captons.Skrimps 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      For me, I noticed a small creep of tds after changes if I mixed and added immediately. Aging I’m assuming give the crystals time to dissolve completely. Like sugar, sometimes it doesn’t all dissolve at once. Age it, make sure it’s fully dissolved, and check and should be perfect. That’s my experience however

    • @MarksShrimpTanks
      @MarksShrimpTanks  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      water straight from the mains be it from the tap or RO source is a different ph because it has gases in it that need to be aired out, you also normally have a temperature difference. I do know people that dont age water and they also breed millions of shrimp but then they might just have the perfect water. aging takes away the variations you get to a large extent.

    • @MarksShrimpTanks
      @MarksShrimpTanks  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      oh I am no expert my friend I just learn as I go along through trial and error, for ph you want between 7 and an 8. for calcium its best they get it from the food so if you can do the powder fish flake thing I show in my other videos also if you are not seeing berried girls the powdered fish flake thing we just talked about will help you out a ton.

    I still wonder why I haven't had any algae issues... I've only been at it for 5 months now, keep my lights on for 12 hours, but only get some dust-algae on the glass, all my tanks are heavily planted though, with water lettuce and salvinia minima as floaters. I keep wondering if I'm doing something wrong, and have some nutriënt deficiency, because I got some plants from friends that were full of it, and my shrimp (and ramshorns and endlers) loved those and cleaned them up rather quickly, so I actually want to grow algae... :S (they were the short green hairy type of algae btw, no idea what they're called)
