    Let me know what you guys think of this format. Like I said, I have a lot of extra footage that isn’t good enough for a feature video, but maybe good enough for something like this?

    The thing I love the most about the ZL-1 is that it just looks like a base model Camaro...no loud colors, stripes, graphics, spoilers, SS badges,or fancy wheels or trim. Literally just what it needs to go faster. Definitely my style of muscle car and I'm a Mopar guy

      They actually had some ZL1s rhat were optioned and even 2 with the rs package, craig jacksons is a cortez silver with vinyl roof and rs package, yes most looked base and thatd be enough for me, just pointing out how crazy some ZL1s can get, the lemans blue one with white vinyl rs package, rally stripes and white vinyl roof is my favorite ZL1 though it sold a few years back at mecum I believe.

    Cutting out the bread and getting to the meat. I like it.
    Also, I'm surprised that Mustang wasn't a Spoortroof model. It looks weird without it. Also, those 429 CJ's made more like 450 when revved above 6000.

      The 429CJ engine was an available option for every flavor of 71 Mustang. That included Grande, hardtop, convertible, sportsroof and Mach 1. The fat-block was most common in the Mach 1. With just over 1860 429 cars made, any '71 Mustang with a 429 is a rare car. The hardtop, grande's and convertibles are EXTREMELY rare cars.

      i was simply using the factory rating of the camaro. it's obvious it's more than 60 after watching the race and seeing the et and mph. if i'd said 130 more hp someone would've commented about that as well. it's all good, no problem.

    • @bobwhite5440
      @bobwhite5440 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      i appreciate it. i'm not up to date on the legitimate current dyno testing. prior to the race, i would've estimated that 427 at about 460 to 470 hp and the 429 around 390 hp or so. i drove a 1970 torino cobra with the 429 cj ram air shaker, 4 speed and 3.91 rearend in about 1979 and it ran smooth and strong, but not overwhelming.

Even though I thought the Camaro would win it is still cool to see what these cars run because they are as old as me and the only ones I ever saw run are modified. 11's 50 years ago was fast a hell, and 12's were cool too. The drag race here didn't matter as much as just seeing what each car was good for on those old style tires. Appreciate it!

    Who doesn’t like a quirky now and then? I have to say this race was a little unfair, not equally matched cars. The Mustang HP was about right but we all know the ZL1 was way underrated, it was running in the neighborhood of 450-460.

    • @burningblue1254
      @burningblue1254 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      A better match would have been the SCJ which was about 425-430 hp. The 71 Stang is actually only a 100 pounds heavier than a 70 but the 71 is always thought of as gaining lots of weight. It had to be longer, wider, and heavier to accomodate the 429 engine.

    • @CarsAndZebras
      @CarsAndZebras  5 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      That car actually runs low 11s fairly easily, but he has to let of the gas at the end of the run (or even hit the brakes!) so he doesn’t run under 11.5. If you run quicker you get kicked out (roll cage required under 11.5, and you can’t have a roll cage in a Pure Stock car).

PS: I tend to be more of a Ford guy but sometimes you just got to tip your hat to greatness. The result here explains why ZL-1 prices at auction (rarity of model understood) are stratospheric.

The car ran 13.30 to 13.40 at 104/105 mph in showroom stock trim and I didn't lose races to GM or Mopar !!! Cars And Zebras Car and driver 1971 tested 429 cobra jet mustang loaded with an automatic and the best time they were able to get was a 14.6 so you’re going to need more than just a few mods to be able to get it into the 12s

    • @mikeburks9641
      @mikeburks9641 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      that's exactly what I mean yes probably more than a few mod, whatever, my point is the camero was a factory race car more or less if you put the same mods on the 429 with the same weight car it would be competitive.

    Funny reading some of these comments. A 14 second street car was considered fast in my day but for a few thousand more you could buy a 13 second car and from there you had to build your own to get into the 12’s, 11’s and so on. I don’t want much though, just a car that can wheelie through the stop lights at the end of my street. 😃👍
