As a candle fanatic, I'm super glad you kept the edges and left it natural. This is truly the greatest candle holder ever to exist! Please don't hesitate to do more mega-cool candle holders in the future!😊 Blessed Be

Hi 👋 Phil, That is a great looking 👀 piece of Art, it was very very sketchy to turn it, it looked like it hit you 😮, at one point, .
I done something similar a few years ago, I got a piece of steel as the tool post and welded on a piece of half-inch thick bar, and about an inch wide, Which will give you plenty of support on the overhang, I suppose another way, if you have got some somelarger forstner bits.
That you could put in Chuck in your tail stock, amazing looking piece of art well done Phil, You could probably even plant a little bonsai tree in it, 😂, ❤, it . From The Hog 🐗🏍️

That was a rubicks cube of a branch! You turn it around and around and it just wasn’t letting you do what you wanted. In the end it is beautiful as I knew it would be. 😉 I am very glad you didn’t turn away the sections on the outside rim! Seeing it whole, I don’t know if I would like it missing part of itself. I especially like the contrast of the smooth, light exterior and the dark, irregular almost wavy interior and the little leg is a nice surprise when you do notice it. Another A+++ for the shelf or table. The medium candle is nice, my preference is the shorter but only seeing the camera view may be why. 👏👏👌👌💕💕

Nice job! I think the trick with the blue tape would have been to stick a bit of it on the shank of the tool instead, slightly overhanging, as a telltale so that when you get too close to the lip it starts to vibrate, should be fairly easy to detect when you reach the edge of the safety zone.

Hello Phil, you asked us to vote on whether to open the piece out to form a bowl or to leave its 'lips' intact. We vote, preserve the lips. They are an important part of what makes the piece interesting. And, candle holders are useful. It made me happy when you decided to just drill a hole big enough for a candle.
Oddly, it hadn't occurred to me that you might glue a base onto the piece. With my sense of humor I as imagining giving it little feet, like a clawfoot bathtub has little feet.
Jean says that a small cactus would be the perfect tenant for the 'candle-space', possibly even an air plant, since you don't have to water those. :-). She says that the piece already looks a bit alien, an alien-looking plant would complement it nicely.
    Thanks for sharing your process!

Just watched your question and it stopped me completely. Not being a wood turner I have no clue what to do. My limited imagination would cut off the long ends, chisel out what looks like a bump on the inside of the large hole, use a sander to round the cut off ends and closed side to make a flat surface so it won’t rock when put on a table. Now back to the video to see how the ace turner makes something beautiful out of this inauspicious chunk of wood!

Oh my goodness.... Phil I've been watching your videos for a good few years now and you've often amazed me, enthralled me, delighted me. Until today you've never managed to outright terrify me! 😮😂 Possibly the most nerve wracking turning I've ever seen you do, it was so fascinating to hear you ruminating on what on earth you could do. I absolutely love what you did underneath that was so clever, it really was a stroke of genius. On the top side I think you made the right call to leave the overgrowth the way it formed and enhance it with such sensitive sanding and finishing. A broader candle would be nice in there, I was thinking a church type candle but you're right, a shorter one works better. If not a candle then some sort of delicate trailing plant would look pretty draping over and around it. I'm dreadful at remembering names but in my minds eye I can see a plant with pale green small round almost heart shaped leaves densely packed on tangled stems, profusely covered with small delicate pale bluish flowers. Wonder what that is eh?! I'm sure it would look lovely tumbling out over the edges though.whatever it is!😄👍🥀

My kind of wood! I once turned an oak piece like that. Some silk greens around a candle would make it pop. They make them round just for candles (especially during the holidays). Check D-Way tools for a better tool rest. I only use their tool rests now for bowls. You can get into almost any small opening with them. And no, no more cutting, you are done. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

Great way it ended up sitting.
More fantastic vision on doing just enough.
      Amazing looking piece buddy!

Thanks, Buddy! The new computer is definitely faster! There are just so many little things, like little programs and add-ons that saved so much time. Finding them again and then finding out they won't work on Win 11, etc. Passwords! Etc. But, I'm getting there. 😊

Mr Phil, I was genuinely scared for your safety with this one. I'm just really glad you got through this piece unharmed.
Anyway, this is quite the unusual piece. I've never seen anything quite like it before. I don't think anyone else would've done this piece any better justice. Anybody else might've gone to extremes with this piece. But I love it because, as usual, your design celebrates the nature of the piece. Your design was simple. But, sometimes, that's all that's needed. In this case, anything more would've been too much.
In other words, it's simply perfect. And it's simply beautiful.

So glad you didn’t remove any of the top edges Phil, you know best and you listened to us shouting noooooo 😂😂
The final finish transformed it and I would still have it as a bowl to throw keys and loose change in rather than a candle holder. ( although does anybody actually have loose change any more 😊)

Very entertaining! Chuckles. Love the result! Absolutely beautiful! A larger diameter electric candle would be perfect! You certainly don’t want a flame burning in it. Thanks for sharing! Please keep it up!

Your problem-solving process is what I gain most from watching your excellent videos. I thought while watching “Just cut back those log ends and reduce the footprint of the piece. That way the beautiful gnarly interior will be the dominant design focus.“ Your design worked out in the end, with that foot on the straight side being the key. Your self deprecating humble brag on that was entirely justified.

Phil you are the only woodturner I know who would have even tried doing something with this piece. But I’ll say you outdid your self in producing this natural piece of nature. I’m like you it wouldn’t leave my house until I leave for good. I watched in amazement to see you figure this thing out. Totally amazing!🤩 😅😊

Had the same type problem in the not to distant past. My solution was to borrow a hollow roller system by Carter tools from a friend. Worked so well I invested in one for myself with a laser guide to tell me where my cutter is. Love your channel! And yes the "I don't know award" is definitely earned by this one. Beautiful as always.

I am going to echo what lots have said and that is I like when you talk through your thought processes. That's how the rest of us learn from the master. :) I also wanted to say, you said "welcome to the Weird Channel" but I call it the "Phil working hard to let the wood be what it wants to be" which is much harder than forcing your vision on the piece. Thanks for an awesome video, see you next time.

Great job Phil, I guess I would have put the piece in a V position then drill the worm hole perpendicular, so both ends wind up equidistant from the table top. I realize that drilling was rather cumbersome and don’t know exactly how I would have pulled it off. That said… you actually turn a bowl every week and have stellar results consistently. Because of that I watch every Thursday. Thanks for what you do for your audience 🫵💪👍😉

Maybe a cut glass whiskey tumbler with a votive candle?

I also like the way you left a little foot. It looks really nice from the side and that top yeah leaving it was the best thing that keeps the beauty in it. As far as spot that you can put a candle in it or you can make another small bowl, that'll fit stand up a little taller in there are a wide bottom vase, but not too tall the vase just tall enough.A vase would be beautiful with some colorful flowers from out of it. But the top is very unique. It looks great you made the right choice by leaving it.

Phil, you and I are in the same general age bracket, and you are not backing away from any challenge being presented to you. Age has given you strength to push your own boundaries, and we all learn from watching you give something a try that might not be comfortable to you. Not only do you take these challenges on, you create a beautiful piece that anyone would love to have in their home! Not cutting away the sides was a perfect, although difficult, choice. Please keep experimenting, and I'll keep cheering from the sidelines. It is a gorgeous piece!

I'm really glad you kept those beautiful rounded edges where the tree tried to grow around an obstacle. They flow with the grain in the bottom and create a dramatic swoop. That was some great thinking on the foot of the piece! I like the natural looking candle in it but I think a plant with long draping stems, like an ivy, would look nice too.
You had some close calls with both the turning/sanding and the narrative! 😂 Nice saves in both cases!
Thank you for sharing your thoughts as you made your way through this project. Even though you didn't turn much wood away I think it was one of the most complex pieces I've seen you turn. Congratulations on keeping your focus tuned into this one!
    Take care!

This one is awesome, Phil! You did just as much as it allowed and didn’t ruin it by trying to make it something it isn’t! Love it! I would have done it the same way (after watching and learning from you for quite a while!) I think it’d look really nice with a small ivy plant in it.
