We used to sit around ( with a bit of a buzz) and listen to all 4 sides without anyone daring to say a word. Jaws dropped in amazement, every lyric having meaning. Paying attention to Steve, then Rick, then Chris, on and on. But special attention to Jon. Heavy drum, then soft, amazing harmonies, unreal changeovers, Damn, I'm back there now, listening with you,and all Yes fans. Majestic, Magical, words can't describe it! Thank you Yes!
Yes at their symphonic creative genius! Pure heaven. Rick Wakeman's keyboards are devine. As my previous comment on side one. You have to listen to the whole album as a piece of classical music. Then you fully understand the album. Some yes fans don't get it. Fanatical Yes fans do. Keep going
This track is the highest point of Yes...in their purest expression. I always said this: there is good music, there are a lot of masterpieces and there is The Remembering which is something more
Probably the most Magic album of all! Atlantic President Ahmet Ertegun gave them free reign to do whatever they wanted. For all of the criticism at the time, I think the music sounds better than ever. Part of the problem is this actually not a rock album. This is complex composition done in 4 movements. When I would go see them I was always amazed at how they could remember all of this. Thank you Ahmet, wherever you are.
Check out Jon's solo album, "Olias of Sunhillow." It's not as rock-ish, more partly ambient, partly pop-ish. "Solid Space" is my favorite track, and reminiscent of the ambient works of Meg Bowles. Any CD of hers is so mellow and smooth, with flashes of starlight.
In my youth in the mid/late '70's the church of my choice on a Sunday morning was very often this album, listened to in its entirety. It's fun watching YOUR spiritual conversion listening to this music now!
When Yes wrote and recorded this Masterpiece they did it knowing full well that it would be played by only a very few radio stations, but they did it anyway. They did it for us and you. They knew people that appreciated the prior efforts of the greatest Prog Rock band of all time would seek it out in the record stores. And we did, and now you are discovering and loving it too. Not much separates you and me except for about 40 years. Thank you for taking this on. Much respect for you, peace.
Worked in a record store when it was released. It was unlike any of their previous material and some were put off by it. It took me some time to get used to and understand the nuances but once I did It has always been a favorite. In some repects this is their most matserful album. They worked very hard on itand were very disapointed that it was not more well received. That is how it is sometimes.Squire said many years ago that this was his favorite bass part. This song has the best build-up crescendo of any song I have ever heard. It reappears to some extent in AWAKEN
@@Magnetron33 I put it on cassette shortly after buying it and my friend and I would listen to it in the car driving around central Ohio. Got a lot of miles out of that cassette :)
@@rogerk55 TFTO and Relayer were probably the two hardest albums to absorb. They took many listenings , but was it ever worth it! They sound better to me now and I am even more amazed that they wrote this stuff and actually toured it.That I saw them dozens of times seems like a surreal dream of sorts. The great and most profound musical experiences of my entire life. They changed my life
Amazing album needs a few listens to actually hear its brilliance. Thank you for reacting to all of its songs. You like me are one of the Good People who turn their heads each day so satisfied by YES.
Absolute joy to see you react to and enjoy this piece! My favourite of the four movements, just ahead of Ritual. When I first heard "Relayer..." it sent a feel tingle down my spine. Still does, nearly 50 years later! "Sacred Sounds" indeed! There really ARE no words to describe masterpieces from Yes like this.
This is the first Yes album I ever bought, as the earlier ones were given to me. I bought it the day it came out in 1974. I was 15 years old. My friends and I thought it was the best thing that we had ever heard. We listened to all four sides before we even talked about it. And yes, we were a little bit stoned on weed. This particular song is my all-time favorite song from any band. From the first time I listened to it, I seemed to be able to remember things I had forgotten. When I listen to the song to this day, it is still true. I remember. It is profound.
Great reaction as always. IMO from "don the cap" to the end is the best example of the band emulating a symphony orchestra at its most expansive. Also, from "surely, surely" it is Awaken before Awaken.
I listened to this album for first time in years ever since Alan White the drummer passed away. This is the most underrated track ever written by Yes. Love these reaction vids as well! 👍🏽
Side 1 and 2 are my favorites This sides keyboard theme was written by drummer Alan White which I thought was odd Later I read Jon said he was a good pianist This album is the 4th version of Yes It marks Alan White's debut Bill Bruford wasn't feeling the process of the band stated there had to be a discussion for every note played Alan who played with John Lennon on his Imagine album and on the single Instant Karma made an impressive debut particularly on side 4 As others noted the Don the cap section is great I also liked Wakemans mellowing playing Even though at the time he wasn't feeling this album and subsequently left after the tour I think this is his best work along with Awaken
Yes's musical genius virtuoso musical skill isn't for everyone. The nuances of this groups musical journey's are incredibly complex and require all of your attention. Not a thing that most people can do in this day and age. I'm glad that you've discovered the astonishing thrill, happiness, and joy their music offers. Still in my Top 5 Fusion groups of ALL TIME. Genesis and yes running neck in neck for 1st place. *Cheers*
Your reaction is priceless because you're speechless. This is definitely one of my favorite Yes songs. It takes you on a journey you've never been before. How can you describe the feeling their music gives you? Your reaction to The Ancient will be interesting. Sorry Pope I had to laugh at the non-working glasses. YES!
There are many people who find the album too lengthy and would have found it better, Yes would have put the ideas for this album together on a single LP. I don't think so - especially with "The Remembering". I think it's nice that Yes takes the time here to repeatedly vary, rearrange and combine the various topics.
The highlight of The Remembering for me is what I call the 'Skylines' section. That beautiful ambient keyboard piece suddenly jumps into the lively mandola groove with superb vocal harmonies which leads to my favorite lyric segment of the whole double album; "Force the bit between the mouth of freedom, didn't we learn to fly? remember to sail the sky...distant suns.. will we reach? winds allow... other skylines other skylines to hold you.." And then into the "Relayer" refrain.. which is also a peak section and Rocks like something from Fragile. I think the 'Skylines'/'Relayer piece could almost have been a distinct song, like an 'outtake' treated as a single.
Aaahh great you are doing this Masterpiece, a nice thing to know on this epic that its got what they call in musical terms 3 Tacets. And a Tacet is a short moment where all music stops. In the early part, the music stops 2 times and JA sings the line "and I do feel very well". And in the actual Finale they do it again, greatl accents by Steve Howe, just highlights of this great song. Now straight to the Ancient, you will need some mindbenders for that one.
You might try listening to progressive jazz, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Chic Corea and Return to Forever, John Coltrane to name just a few! Also, they won’t let you play it here, Jimi Hendrix Electric Ladyland, and The Studio Album Rainbow Bridge
You know when this album first came out....my friend Ruben gave it to me as a Christmas gift because he knew I Loved Yes. And I heard it and really did not like it at all. i just thought that it wasn't as hard driven as the previous album and their talk of the evolution of Created worlds including this one being derived from water or Celestial Waters just did not settle well for me......I was young.....things had to be dynamic for me to notice. However, when I heard the album again when I was 43......I absolutely loved it.......the sulkiest vocal harmonies and incredible instruments were sooooooooooooooo beautiful like creation of sound was being born along with the creation of music itself, then I started to understand YES on this album. You got it in one session. You Get YES!!!!! Hahahahaha.............lol...............hahahaha
Another great reaction. This music just reaches right into your soul doesn't it? There's a lot of great bands, many of which you've reacted to already but none are like Yes. The next one is a bit different as there aren't as many lyrics but some great music nonetheless. Another band you might want to try reacting to is The Moody Blues. A couple song suggestions: Nights In White Satin (album version) and Question. Thanks for sharing your discovery of awesome music with us❣
Great reaction man. I hope you check out their first 2 albums. It's a slightly different lineup and they weren't a Progressive Rock band in the beginning. All of the songs are under 7 minutes long, but I still think you'll enjoy the music from those first 2 albums and it'll give you a better understanding of the band, as you'll see where they came from and what they evolved into. I love their first 2 albums and I'm a big Prog Rock fan, so I can't recommend them enough. Hope you check them out.
Bro at 16:25 you are groovin' af and it's so so good then at 16:35 YOU'RE IN HEAVEN GOD IS SPEAKING TO YOU but.. 16:44 Your soul is crushed as you don't get the pay off you expected :(16:51 you seem kinda offended by the whole thing but then 16:57 you go into a deep trance-like slumber 17:16 you're brought back to life and start to realise what the fuck just happened. LMFAO I love you bro you're a legend!
If you get the music and it looks like you do, YES will be your favorite band.. They are still performing, certainly not like in their heyday but worth going to hear the best of the best.
The next track from Topographic Oceans, The Ancient, is the most different Yes song that you will ever hear so you must listen to it very intensely to understand the themes under the guitar which takes centre stage. On first listen it sounds like a weird guitar solo track, not many vocals, but the bass and keyboards play an important, understated role in this and you need to separate them from the lead guitar that dominates this song. The lead singer, Jon Anderson, says that Topographic Oceans should be played as one song for the best effect but, obviously, this wouldn’t work for your reaction channel.
I gotta ask, what is it that you're feeling and experiencing throughout the duration of this piece? Of course your viewership sees your reactions in the various sections of not only this song but countless other tracks but it seems like you experience this overload of euphoria and emotion from the music to the point that you almost shut down. It's really awesome to see the connection you make with the music because music is truly powerful and touches lives and Yes' music is truly impacting. Best regards man.
Progressive artists in the late '60s and early '70s bit off huge chunks, assuming the role of a classical composer/group. As Rumi said: "Start a huge, foolish project, like Noah. It makes absolutely no difference what people think of you." And by taking on this music, you show that you too are willing to start a huge project...like Yes, ELP, King Crimson, Pink Floyd, Renaissance, Zappa, Coltrane, Monk...and other creators of the first water. By resonating with greatness, you reveal your own greatness, and I know you will do great thing. Alas, you already are. You may come to love, revere, certain sections of "Tales", and I still know all the lyrics, all these years later, and can play the songs on my mind's juke box. (Ask your granny.) Also, read: "Autobiography of a Yogi", a footnote of which was the inspiration for "Tales". Peace bro. db
