The ending makes more sense with the next song, if you want to call it that, in the album. It feels like a computer coming into it which the next song fitter happier is very much as if it comes from a computer
My college girlfriend was obsessed with Radiohead. Always trying to get me into them. While I was trying to get her into Nirvana. I resisted but eventually gave in and she was right, they're great. Ironically she was at a Radiohead concert out of state when she called me saying that I was kicked out of the apartment. Our landlord caught my band practicing there when I wasn't on the lease. I had nowhere to go but to walk for miles to my bassist's apartment on the hottest day of the year and sit for hours not knowing what to do. Rock n Roll.
Dave, id sit through a whole radiohead album reaction. Theres so many feels and transitions that dont get captured as individual songs. Love that you still keep at the radiohead reactions even if you dont love em. I keep hoping thatll click on day... It took a while for me
The ending is actually one of the cooler parts, the album is basically a concept album called “ok computer” so it’s intended to be a computer shutting down
Some fun facts on this video: The idea for this video was originally intended for a Marilyn Manson video. Thom is legit getting Carbon Monoxide poisoning from the fake engine pouring fumes into the back seat! The song structure and style was based on Sexy Sadie by the Beatles.
It’s a good nod to Sexy Sadie but set in a completely different context lol. I found a lot of Radiohead stuff very drab but I will admit this song and a lot of the others from this period are quite catchy.
The chorus is C to D to G to F sharp...Goes to the F sharp major seventh on second rotation...To b minor on the third. Really sweet progression, subtle
The LP this song is off of is widely considered an alternative rock masterpiece. I read a kind of funny quote, a member of the band saying something like “It wasn’t originally intended to be an unhappy record.” Because on a number of levels it turned out that way. But I’m still a big fan of the release. The band was just on a different type of trip for it. Think Radiohead specializes in different. Thom Yorke was convinced the studio they were using was haunted. Among other things going on. I love his vocal melodies on the outro. And the overall instrumentation of the song. The album is regarded as a highlight of their career, and I’m on board with that.
I know you are not a fan of the noise and feedback 90s alt rock bands abused of, but i love the way it turns an already disturbing song (the lyrics, the vocals, the overall spirit of the song) even more disturbing
I was really interested on how you'd react to Karma Police, I thought your score was quite fair. Glad that the song was enjoyable and interesting even though it isn't your jam; and I also like it when you pull out the bass & explore the chordal progressions. Plus I love that clip from Blazing Saddles that's just a bonus!
Love that ending. The tough thing about the channel is the focus on the song as an standalone work and not the album as a story, but fair to not like it.
I remember there was a time years ago when every time I picked up my acoustic guitar I had to play this song 😂 every fucken time 🤦🏻♂️ I was obsessed… it’s a beautiful song ❤
The Bass is always great in Radiohead songs, and he does a lot of unconventional things that are usually really interesting. To me the rhythm section are the unsung heroes in the band and if you listen to the Bass playing in a lot of the songs you will be impressed, I think.
Oh, sorry. I clicked the thumbs up before watching the video. I guess I'm doing it wrong... I mean: I don't know yet if i like YOUR opinion (I often don't), but i know you'll be honest. And that alone deserves a thumb up!
I love radiohead, but I remember arguiing with my friend that this song is 'melodically pedestrian'. That was about 1998 and we haven't finished arguing about it yet.
You’ve said the same thing about muse’s fade-outs before. It’s artistic and in context of the album it does make sense. Just writing it off because it’s not to your liking doesn’t make sense
@@justindurham9253 It makes perfect sense. I'm not reviewing the album, therefore the context within the album is irrelevant to this review. I'm only reviewing this one song, so I base my evaluation within the context of this one song on its own. Sorry if you don't like that, or can't accept that. Maybe you might want to stop watching the videos on this channel if my opinions and how I do things on this channel upset you. Just a thought.
Someone should get a live performance (preferably one with the singalong outro, like from when they’ve closed with it) so he can see some of the fun ways they adapt this song live.
Dave, it's amazing how you avoided hearing certain songs. Do you never listen to rock radio? I believe you because you are an honest guy. Kind of jealous because you're hearing these songs for the first time.
Absolutely not, I avoid radio in general except for sports-talk radio (am 570 KLAC in Los Angeles). I've always avoided the radio since I was in high school, and I stuck to cassette tapes and CDs so I could listen to the music I wanted to hear, when I wanted to hear it.
Interesting how different people have different perspectives and what they consider to be a great song. Not here to argue about the score but 7.7 vs #297 on Rolling Stones top 500 songs of all time. Others probably take lyrics, overall album and are more receptive to slower songs than others.
It's a really good song but it's not that high on my list of Radiohead songs. I like most of the tunes on the album better than Karma Police and my favorite is Climbing Up The Walls (this month anyway).
I can say that how you react to this song of Radiohead is pretty similar to how you reacted to Space Dementia by Muse few weeks ago. You enjoy both songs most of the times but you got pissed by the ending. 🤣 And this is just another manifestation of rivalry between the two 🤓
To me Muse is bombastic and the lyrics are sophomoric. I do like and respect their musicianship and there are a number of songs that I like, but there's no doubt Radiohead is far more critically acclaimed for a reason.
@@jameshannagan4256Problem for me is Radiohead got too far up their own arse. I’m not going to deny that Muse have also lost their way the last 10-15 years but they can still write good hooks. Radiohead seem to try and get away from being catchy or memorable for the sake of it which is silly imo. As far as I’m concerned, The Bends was pretty good and so was OK Computer. I don’t care for most of the stuff which has come after that. Not only that, but Muse are one of the best live bands around. Admittedly I haven’t seen Radiohead live, it could be interesting, but from the bits I’ve seen it mostly looks quite depressing by comparison. I think a lot of the critical acclaim is somewhat shallow. They have a certain moodiness about them which is lapped by the ‘intellectual crowd’. I think In Rainbows is pretty decent tbf, but there’s no way something like that deserves the amount of praise it has had heaped on it. Even some of the worse Muse songs get stuck in my head. I can’t remember the last time I got a Radiohead song stuck in my head.
@@jonathanmarkham1998 In Rainbows is probably my favorite Radiohead album. It all comes down to what you really like, if you like more math rock type of stuff with a lot of genre blending, than Radiohead is for you. My cousin's big band jazz ensemble does a *kick ass* arrangement of this. The last time I saw them perform it they had the entire club singing along.
The ending took from the song but adds to the album as a whole. It leads into the next song.
