    I'm not sure why everyone wants to put the angle block down by the handle and watch the blade point flex. Seems to me you'd want the block more forward of center.

    • @em1860
      @em1860 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you flex the blade point, you're doing it wrong. Only gentle forward/back motions. Shouldn't result in any flex

      Horl has a vid that show 2 step process for longer knives or flexible knives. Sharpen back half then front half, overlapping the middle point.

    I have the exact same set up as you. The difference is that I read the manual. If you had, you would have known that the ceramic disk supplied with the standard tool is for removing burrs, not sharpening. Also at 50:13, when you referred to the “Plunge” I imagine you meant the ricasso.
    Otherwise I thought this to be a very well considered in depth review of an impressive, though rather expensive, piece of kit.

    • @TacticalReviews
      @TacticalReviews  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi @ruadhagainagaidheal9398 thanks for your input.
      Just to add a little information based on your comments, if you take a look at HORL's website and the product page for just the ceramic disk, you can see their description of this stone on its own. I was also lucky enough to spend time directly with the HORL team workshopping the use of this sharpener.
      The plunge line is the transition from primary bevel to ricasso. I was referring to this feature intentionally. As a knife feature the plunge line makes a huge difference to many aspects of use and maintenance, so is always an important design factor in a blade and a point of reference in knife testing.

    Great review! I have never sharpened a knife before but I was looking at reviews about that horl. This video is by far the best I've found. One question though, why removing the excess with tape instead of rinsing it with water?

    • @TacticalReviews
      @TacticalReviews  ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Thanks. So, the tape method is for two reasons. Firstly, as the blade is being magnetised by the angle guide, the filing are sticking to it. To wash them away would require actually wiping them off under a stream of water, and quite likely not get them all. The tape sticks to the filings and pulls them off. It also saves multiple trips to the sink and back. This is my approach, and might not be best for someone else.

    Anyone else find it funny that the block has a magnetic lock to hold it but the barrel falls right off the stand?

  • @danc2014
    @danc2014 ปีที่แล้ว

    Either those were dull blades or you took off too much of the edge. (Probably removed all the grain ) That's too much metal removed. A rotating wheel does not make a grain pattern perpendicular to the knife edge and will not make a bur. What does a close up of the knife edge look like. How long does the knife stay sharp?

  • @davidchang7500
    @davidchang7500 ปีที่แล้ว

    Sooner or later, the sharpened knives will get magnetised! Which means one has to be careful with removing the (magnetised) steel filings or burrs sticking on the blades after sharpening or else these tiny abrasive filings may scratch the blades, esp the shiny ones with mirror finish. Using sticky tapes helps to 'lift' the filings to avoid rubbing the filings against the blades in an attempt to remove them.

    • @tomgreen2058

      Could this explain why I struggle to get material removed close to the tip? I've used the marker pen method and it never really seems to get to the edge when I'm reprofiling a blade.

  • @A6N2D4Y
    @A6N2D4Y ปีที่แล้ว +1

    How hard should you press the sharpener against the blade ?

    • @TacticalReviews
      @TacticalReviews  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That isn't an easy thing to answer quantitatively as you need to develop a feel for it. However I would say a good guide would be to be gentle. You don't want to be really forcing the stone along the blade. Also with the diamond stone, diamond tends to cut best with light pressure and too much pressure will prematurely wear out the diamonds by breaking them out of the matrix holding them in place.

    Why never check for the burr on opposite side? Just running one side, check same side and change to do another. How you can be sure your burr is there, on other side?
    And on a hunting knife, why when you changed the stone to fine, you was still doing it on the same side for quite a while...? Your burr was definitely on other side.
    That could be the reasons why your kitchen knife did quite poor on paper test ;)

      It is difficult to show the whole process and the reprofiling of an edge bevel without it going on a bit. There is also a degree of how long it can take to edit the original footage for spedding up sections and not losing some of the thoughts and comments along the way. The time to create the final edit even on simple videos can be a long time, not to be underestimated. I did suggest viewers might want to fast-forward a lot. 🙂

  • @MrBobWareham
    @MrBobWareham ปีที่แล้ว

    Looking at your video, as the knife is held by magnets any steel coming off of the blade will gather on the blade, so as you go back and forth you will grind the steel partials and damage the knife surface, so I would not use it on my best knife, not a good design!.
    Also, the smaller the knife, the angle will change, Large knife shallow angle small knife sharper angle = bad design
