- How to move plant cuttings from water to potting mixture? When is it time to plant them? In this video I’ll be transferring and moving a few plant cuttings that’s been propagating in water and sphagnum moss into my aroid and soil mixture. We’re actually going to be moving a few of my Monstera plant cuttings like the Monstera Peru, Monstera Siltepecana and the Monstera Deliciosa Borsigiana Albo.

The ingredients in the Aroid mix I used are: coco chips, bark, pumice, expanded clay and peat chunks.

I just put three leaves in the water. looks like monstera very beautiful. and they were short cut. short stem. but enough to sprout out. I am really hopeful they will sprout..

You can actually mix spagnum moss into soil, to make it more airy :) So no need to spend time removing it from the roots.

Another technique for transitioning out of water that I've heard, is to leave the cutting in the glass with water, and slowly over time add scoops of soil into the water, until eventually the plant is just in soil. Once really established, move into a container with drainage. Takes time and patience, but makes sense to me!
Ooh ok. Thanks for sharing. I’ve never tried this method and it does make sense, I think the only thing that might scare me a bit is the soil sticking to the roots and build up where it might suffocate but I think of you add it gradually it should be fine 🤔

This is the best method of transferring in soil and its never fail...i always transfer my plants cutting with this method..
I just did this. So far roots are growing and the soil is drying.

I have been hoping to find an answer to my question about what to do with my water propagations as we head into Winter (I have an Albo and Thai that are nearly ready to transition to a different medium). When planting in soil, do you cover the node (with roots) with soil?

So I have had my Thai constellation re-rooting in water for 3 months now...has a very healthy white root system and I feel link a new to transfer to soil now...I hate that it’s winter now but if i wait until spring it will be 6 months in water which is also not good...any suggestions? And how is your albo doing 2 months later after the transfer?

Awesome. If you get them in a nice airy substrate than it should be fine potting them in fall/winter even in Ontario, just need to be mindful of watering and getting use to cutting back during the winter. 😅

Hi! Thank you so much for this video! I have been rooting a monstera albo wet stick In sphagnum for a while, and it has healthy roots, but the growth point is just now finally getting ready to sprout a leaf. I definitely have at least as many roots if not a bit more, than you have on your monstera siltepecana (sp?) but I have not been able to find any info anywhere showing how many roots/the quality of roots you should have before transitioning from moss to an aroid mix! I am thinking that maybe I should wait for the leaf to actually pop out before switching it over but I feel so much more comfortable with the amount and quality of the roots I have, now, after seeing this video! Can you tell me, how did the transition go for you on this plant? Did it do well? If you had to do it over again, would you do it the same way or would you have waited for more root growth? Any help or tips you could offer would be so appreciated!

Hi! I recently received an monstera albo cutting. It's sitting in water and has some nice roots already. It is pushing out a new leaf, and I'm wondering if I should wait for the leaf to grow and unfurl before I transfer it to soil. Would it harm the plant to transfer it now?

Nice video! I recently bought a small, one leaf cutting of the M deliciosa Aurea, its rooting nicely in water. Its just developing a small bump for a new leaf. I'm so scared of it getting root rot. I bought the orchid pots and made up some chunky "soil," so now I just need to get 'er done! - I have a history of watering my plants to death, last year I lost a nice Anthurium clavigerum, and this year, I almost killed a beautiful Pink Princess. I caught it in time to cut the PP stem into several pieces and root them.
Thank you for this video, it's very good timing because i had moved 2 cuttings from my Monstera Deliciosa from water to soil and they have both gotten root rot. I have one of them back in water healing (grew a new root already). I'm afraid to transfer them soil again because they seem to rootrot pretty quickly. I think I'll try the spagnum moss out. Thanks!
Glad you enjoyed and found it helpful. I know what you mean, after experiencing root rot I get so conscious of potting them back in soil. Key is to make sure you have a nice and airy substrate to start with.

I live in a tiny small town in Norway, and getting a hold of the things you use for your potting mix are damn near impossible 😅 I have access to regular plant soil, bark and round expanded clay(it's called Leca kuler here).
Do you think a mix of that would be sufficient for my monstera cuttings?
I've also been told that cat sand(litter sand?) Could be used? 🤭
Also: my cuttings have a few roots three big ones with smaller ones growing from them. Winter time in northern Norway is cold and really dark. Do you think it would be smart to take them out for their water, and into a potting mix, before the daylight goes away for the winter? Even though their not really "grown enough" ?

I had two leaves on one stem from a cutting that I've been propagating in water for 2 months. I just transferred it into it's first pot following your directions. :) (Fingers crossed!) I see that this video is a year old right now as I type this. I'm wondering HOW is your plant doing today, almost exactly a year later? I need help. I purchased my monstera two weeks ago and it’s been living in a bucket of water because I want to move it when I get a moss pole. Now the monstera is shedding its soil roots (turned mushy) and growing some water roots. I’m wondering if I should remove all the soil roots and wait for the water roots to grow out, or move them before all soil roots are gone?

My rare fibrosum just went through serious shock after replanting it into soil. I kept it in a shagnum moss with a mixture of perlite for 3 months and I'm freaking out now and don't know what to do. All the leaves became droopy and I'm not sure if it will come back.

I replanted my propagated Monstera (from water to soil) but leaves are droopy but still green. Any tips on how to perk them up. They have been in the pot of soil for about 5 weeks. I can tell the roots are growing though.

I've put them in a very large pot.😬 I'm now very concerned that I might have killed the roots of one of the cuttings as the stem is turning brown.😬 The leaf still seems ok so hopefully I'm wrong but I'm going to re-pot it into a smaller pot now. I know this video is old but I was wondering, I have a monstera cutting from a nursery. Does it need to be calloused before putting it in water? It can I put it in water right away?
I have monstera that started to grow a new leaf slowly in water but I moved it to soil while still in the process and now the new leaf is coming through black, I checked the roots and there’s no rotting, and the soil is moist but not over watered, have I just shocked the leaf because it was growing while in water instead? Should I move it back to water? Help

Hello, today I transfer my monstera albo from water to soil. I was bought it almost 1 year ago in clay ball and I put it into the water with clay balls. it grows roots well in it. and it gave an air root also, then it starts to give a new leaf but I am waiting for almost 4 months for it to grow and it didn't. Today I realize that it's roost are rotting in the water, so I decided to transfer it to soil. Will there be any problem? I am ssoo affraid to loose her!

I've been propagating my Monstera for 4 Weeks now. Do you know how it can happen that a new leaf comes out, but NO root came out?
My cutting do not have a aerial root, I see so many ppl rooting their albos from the aerial roots. Can I root in water without that? I have my cutting in a mason jar in water on a heating mat.
I potted my monstera albo cutting on Sunday with a moss pole and watered thoroughly. Your video helped a lot! How often do you water once potted in soil?
How often is hard to answer as it depends on your environment, how much your plant gets, the size of the pot, the potting mix it’s in. I think rule of thumb for me is beater when the potting mixture is completely dry. Because mine is in a fairly small container, gets a lot of bright indirect light, and the potting mixture is super airy, it does up pretty fast. So I usually water mine every 7-10 days.

When the roots have developed. I’ve moved monstera cuttings from water to soil when they have at least two inches of roots. Meet thing is just to make sure your pots isn’t too big for the roots and your medium is airy to start with.

Yup. It’s normal. I’ve had one where it didn’t give me new leaves for months. As long as your plant is healthy and giving it the right lighting condition it eventually will start to grow.
So once the roots have established in the airy mixture, Do you leave it there or transfer it to a regular potting mixture?
It depends on my medium. This aroid mix in using I thunk I’ll keep these plants in. Until it’s time to repot again. I might keep using the same if I have some around or just make my own using potting mix and pumice and bark.

Love the clear pots too. Such a beautiful monstera. Also I recall you saying you have an indoor jasmine plant. I recently purchased one and read about it. Sounds difficult. Can you do a little clip on this plant sometime? Tks.
Jasmine as an indoor plant, needs a lot of bright light. South or east preferred. Like plants water when the soil is dry, and prune after the blooms have fallen to promote new growth

Root system is always a good Sign your plant is healthy. Once you see it developed really well and there’s also sign your plant is growing then it’s ok to transfer it to soil. I’ve transferred plant cuttings with at least 2 inches of roots. Just make sure the pot isn’t too big for the root system.

Hi Christian, great video! I’ve been water propagating a monstera deliciosa - it developed new white roots which then turned slightly brown. The roots are 2-3” long - is it safe to transition to a pot or should I wait for new, healthy white roots to grow again? Thanks so much!
It should be safe, but maybe wait until the roots are a bit longer. Also make sure your pot size is t too big for the roots and your potting mixture is airy when you do decide to transfer them .

hi, do you add nutrients to your propagations to promote new growth while the propagate?
I don’t add any if they are propagating in water or moss. I’ve heard that it can create issues with the growth of the foliage while it’s trying to develop roots.
cloning gel to promote growth points? how is this done? on the growing stem itself, on the roots? in the water? so curious!
I put it on the stem where the dormant growth points are. It will wake them up.

I’ve never used heat mats before. But definitely use a humidifier in the winter. Especially since it gets really dry up here in Canada during the winter. Also get a hygrometer to measure the humidity levels in your home .

I would change it wherever it got dirty or at least every two weeks, whichever comes first. Most times I’ll need to top it up with fresh water. I would avoid putting any nutrients or fertilizer in the water. This can cause growth issues and deformed leaves etc.

Just make sure the water is above the node where the roots will grow from.

I want to Learn everything that I can from you guys in TH-cam before I take the plunge since the price here in our country, the Philippines, is exorbitant! Definitely take the plunge only when you’re ready and if it’s within your budget. The cost of plants have definitely risen everywhere. The Albo here is pretty expensive as well. For my cutting, I paid about $270 back in spring 😬
Oh, I didn't know that it's also that expensive there! What a shame! Beautiful and rare plants should be accessible to the masses so that the younger generations will be more involved in not just acquiring an " it plant" but also in taking care of them so that more will be planted in our surroundings and then everyone will get a chance to see their beauty. This plant journey will test your patience , the value of hardwork, and perseverance , which are major factors in the development of one's character.It's also calming and therapeutic, so it's a win-win situation, but the cost of the plants is a major hindrance. Extremely disappointing.
Where do get those pots
I need help I got some cuttings from a lady. They didn’t have much root on them at all. They have been in water. I change the water at least once a week maybe two. I noticed yesterday some of them were brown and mushy so I trimmed them off did a little soak with hydrogen peroxide and water. Then fresh water. I would like to plant it in something to grown more roots. But I’m afraid that it will die
Always a fun project. I don’t like water prop because it tends to shock the plant when you do finally get it into a substrate. It’s due to the lack of dead root cuticle build caused by the medium. This inability for the water propagated roots to withstand abrasive soil is very common
What’s your choice for propagating? Do you do sphagnum?
@@dotorabedouina I’m doing a video upload in this Monday actually but my presence is between sphagnum and leca. I fell like leca builds up the best cuticle and makes for the best transfer to potting soil in the future. Sphagnum you need to watch for rot or degradation. What is your top choice?
Thanks for this video. Do you have any tips on when to repot a pilea baby that was born in water? I tried propagating pilea from a single leaf with some of the trunk attached and it's been growing some very nice roots, but also a baby. The problem is, the baby is completely submerged in water and I don't know when to pot everything, including the baby 👶

If the roots are king and healthy enough it should be ok to repot now.

How long should you leave a cutting in water before potting it up?
Hmm for most of my plants. I’ll wait until the roots are at least 2 inches long before potting them in the soil mixture. Just make sure the pot is not too big for the roots and plant and use the mixture that’s appropriate for your plant and watering habits.
How long do you keep your cuttings in spag moss before putting them in the aroid mix? i'm following your process step by step 😄
I’ll keep it until the roots have grown a bit more or they’re starting to show through the drainage holes or the roots are long enough to be potted in the pot size you are going to pot it with aroid mix.
