The Fall 1776 Campaign: The Battle of Fort Washington

On November 16th, 1776, the battle of Fort Washington was fought in northern Manhattan. In a decisive victory, the British would crush the last American stronghold on Manhattan Island and kill or capture over 3,000 Americans. It would be one of the worst American defeats of the war, and effectively crippled the remnants of Washington's army to such an extent that he was forced into a month-long retreat at a rapid pace through New Jersey.

Thank you for covering the history of Fort Washington. I really enjoyed it as my great Grandfather, George McReary, was one of the Militia who were captured at the battle of Fort Washington. Originally from Ireland, he come to the colonies in 1775, serving as a cabin boy on a British war ship. He then defected and volunteered in the Pennsylvania Militia. Fortunately, as he was imprisoned on a British war ship in New York harbor, a friend of his, who was serving on the ship, looked out for his well-being, probably saving his life.
