Well articulated history once again. The music, the surroundings, and your authenticity bring history to life. Love the peaceful rhythm of this channel. Although modern man considers this era primitive, perhaps even brutal, you manage to convey the beauty of nature, the rewards of living close to nature, and the immense but quiet satisfaction of a self-reliant life. Thank you.

Hi Peggy, I’m Roger a fellow subscriber, I love the channel as well. Cathy and Peter really bring history to life. One observation I would like to make is that mankind and primal behavior still exist today. I know it’s a dream but if man would take seriously our past many mistakes and abuses could be avoided. The only thing that has really changed over time is technology.

    Hi Peter,
I agree wholeheartedly with the previous comments, you are an excellent storyteller! If school history teachers in the UK taught the subject sat around a campfire, I recon 99% of the kids would actually learn something, remember what they have heard and vote History their favourite subject! Sadly, our Health & Safety laws would not allow it just in case a child got smoke in it’s eyes or burnt itself pouring the coffee! 😂
    Kind regards,
    Mark

Hey Peter! One of the first books I recall coming across in the Elementary School Library was Quebec, 1759. Since it was a Young Reader's Book, it had a lot of pictures... no doubt to keep the "Young Reader" interested in the topic. One of them showed a party of Gorham's Rangers slipping over the side of a whale boat to launch a raid. I must have stared at that illustration for hours... taking in all of the details. It made a powerful impression on a much younger me!
I'm looking forward to seeing the completed canoe AND the next bit of "History By The Hearth"!

On another note, if you haven't made a video on forging and using a crooked knife I'd like to see one. Where you're getting snow down here we're getting rains by the buckets, washing out my waterways and keeping me busy with fencing. Curious if the bucket in the video came from the Ross Farm? (I would like to source one like that, but didn't see it listed on their website.)

It did indeed, I’m sure if you were to contact them they could help you out. It is a dry bucket, so not water tight. Great for carrying produce from the root cellar etc.

Great, but one mistake I noticed around 12 25 or so you said abraham was the farmers last name. It was his first, Abraham Martin, one of my ancestors. It was his farm

Great lesson. To finish it for you, the Treaty of Paris was horrible for Britain. By taking French territories of what is now Canada, they took the financial drain away from Paris and transferred it to London. It allowed Paris to focus elsewhere and hindered London. It would sow the seeds of eventual disaster for a London two short decades later when Washington finally defeated the British at Yorktown. All the British gained was “a few acres of snow.”

A very interesting part of Canadian history. We Americans think of Quebec as mostly French-speaking people, did this happen as a result of this war?

    • @TheWoodlandEscape
      @TheWoodlandEscape  2 ปีที่แล้ว

It did indeed Jan, King George the second in all of his benevolence , decided to allow them to keep their language and religion . Not only is Quebec French speaking but, most of New Brunswick and a good portion of Nova Scotia.

At 12:06 you mention that The Plains of Abraham are named after a farmer with the last name "Abraham".
The plains are actually named after land that was granted to Abraham Martin in 1635. Abraham was my 9th Great Grandfather.
There is a family anecdote that says, the path used by Wolfe, was the same path that Abraham made to get his animals down to water his stock a hundred years earlier.
Enjoyed your History by the hearth. Cheers!

@@TheWoodlandEscape I have the same problem on the Scottish side of my family, there are lots of records but not enough detail to be of any use. Luckily the French/Acadian side of my family, and the church kept detailed records. The Acadians were known to be able to rhyme off 4 or 5 generations of Grandparents, as well as Aunts and Uncles. Cheers

Now you're starting to chat about where Australia gets thought about.
James Cook the navigator & cartologist was with Wolfe. The following American Revolution victory eventually lead to the 'discovery' of the East Australian Coast by the same Cook & eventually changed convict transportation/ deportation to New South Wales & not the America's.
    Oh well more research!!

How much blood need B spilt, for a peoples 2 live 'peaceably'? And then? Begun again. The very soil we till has been 'fertilized' by blood and the graveyard of nameless numbers. It makes a body tend towards; 'appreciation', IF we take the time to ponder it! Dear Peter and Catherine, the talents U have in relating the past, bring us this Gift = Appreciation, and it is no small Gift! I thank you and ask God to grant you continued health and blessings. As U mentioned Catherine's ancestral tie (Wolfe), her hand flinched nary an inch. I believe the (battle is out of her blood) and lucky for you! LOL!
