    More Information
The drawn maps (by me not the pictures of actual ones) of early New York City I show in the video aren't an exact approximations to the real maps but an artistic representation of how it could have looked like.
1:44 Reprint of 1685 which is not a completely correct representation of the situation at the time. The border with New England had been adjusted to 50 miles (80 km) west of the Fresh River, while the Lange Eylandt towns west of Oyster Bay were under Dutch jurisdiction.
1:52 There was one close call with the natives when the Pavonia Massacre occurred and the Algonquian tribes joined the tribes already fighting the dutch. This however resulted in a Native American defeat after the Dutch sen reinforcements to the city.
1:59 I am calling it a city here however it was still quite small as the entire colony of new Netherlands (including New Amsterdam) had only about 8000 inhabitants,
2:03 Not all of those Africans where slaves by the time of British occupation (small population was free), however how many where free I was unable to find.
2:50 There was a period at the turn of the century that the slave population may have numbered up to 40% (number still very much debated) of the cities population however this changed after the enlightenment era, coming back down to 20%.
4:24 Including freed African Americans by the British during the war, which where technically suppose to be given back to their American owners.
8:00 Named as such because it was signed under a buttonwood tree.
8:02 First attempt in New York City I don't know if it was the first attempt in the whole country.
10:17 Ticker tape is a thin peace of paper holding the information of changing stock prices. Today its mostly confetti that is thrown out on to the parade and not ticker tape.
    11:02 Beating out London.
11:16 Speakeasies where illegal/hidden bars that would sell alcohol during the prohibition era.
11:25 It can be argued that the great depression started prior to Black Tuesday in the farming sector and then other areas and the stock market was just an effect of all these other problems.
11:40 To be fare large amounts of anti immigration laws started before the great depression. Spoored up nationalism during and after the great war fueled anti immigrant sentiment. However there where laws extending this immigration block during the great depression as well and that's why I mentioned it.
    Martin Fernandez
"The building on the right at 11:59 is not Rockefeller Center it's 500 Fifth Ave. Rockefeller Center is not in the picture."
I am sorry I wasn’t able to cover everything in the history of New York City specially the more recent stuff like the 2008 crash or 9/11 but due to time I can’t possibly cover everything and I recommend going to pick up a book in your local library if you want to know more.

Nice video. Now a few suggestions! Start with a larger scale map of the area for people not familiar with the NYC geography. Add dates/year text overlay into the video.
And, most importantly, it sounds like you're just reading from a script. It *sounds* uninterested, but you wouldn't be making this video if you were. Put in some emphasis! You wouldn't make this video if you didn't enjoy history, and I wouldn't be watching it if I didn't. But it did sound dry and read from a script.
Just my drunken opinion. Loved the vid and keep it up!

As a New Yorker, great summary of the history, but I have to disagree with Mr. Beat’s “hopeful” out look of NYC. Due to a resurgence of a Tammany Hall like entity in New York, ineffective legislation (such as bail reform) has seen an uptick in crime causing many residents to leave the city. This also was assisted by the new work from home movement brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic in the beginning of 2020. Streets were left nearly empty outside large transportation hubs such as Penn Station. This eventually caused people to realize that paying high rents (over 2500 USD per month for a studio apartment that is the size of a shoe box) and additional NYC income taxes was not worth it for many. Thousands of professionals and office workers flocked to the suburbs of Long Island, New Jersey, Connecticut, and upstate NY. This resulted home prices to skyrocket. For example in my home of Long Island, homes were approximately 250-300k USD on average 10 years ago. Now, the current price is approximately 550k - 700k USD. This increasing trend in housing prices is prevalent throughout the entire USA (if not world), but it is especially prevalent in NYC and surrounding communities. So no, my outlook on the future of NYC is not positive or optimistic. New York needs strong leadership for the governorship and the city’s mayor.

"New York today is well, New York" would be a perfect ending. We didn't need a trite summary with a "hopeful message applicable to today's city and it's future." Also didn't need the schilling of his video for NY vs LA... one is the greatest city in the world, the other is one earthquake away from falling into the Pacific.

Great city profiles. Subscribed! Will you do the San Francisco Bay Area soon? I'm from here, but on a recent trip North to Fort Ross in Sonoma County, I learned for the first time that that fort was named after the Russians who made it this far South from Alaska. Apparently, they are what lit the fire under the butts of the Spanish to hurry up and establish a presence out of feeling threatened. But the Russians were never actually interested in establishing a colony after all, they just wanted to trade and collect furs from the Natives. The name of the Russian River nearby made a lot more sense after that.

Our cities clean up and revival is due to mayor Giuliani. New York will always be greatful for him but sadly today its returned to the crime state of the 60s and 80s infact maybe worse. We need another Giuliani. Eric Adams will be the downfall of our city and turn us into a Coastal Detroit.

I mean - I would've guessed that they named New York after York in the UK rather than the Duke of it

    • @shazanali692
      @shazanali692 ปีที่แล้ว

Yes the duke was the duke of York, York is a city in England one of the most important cities of England for 800 years, who ever controlled that city was basically the king maker, so the king promised his brother a present in the new world, and when they took new Amsterdam they called it a New York in honour of James duke of York, the old York, so yes it's kind of named after the city aswell because York was such a. Important city

@@MLaserHistory Thanks, for pointing me to where I can find your sources. It would be helpful for other viewers to see this right in your video description as well. There are actually a couple of issues you bring up in the video that I want to dig more into, and maybe others might feel the same. I'm not sure what direction you want to take your channel toward, but if one of the goal is to spread learning then making sources easy to reference would be very helpful. Thanks!
