A Revolutionary War Patriot and a Cemetery of Veterans: The Cassville Cemetery of Jackson, NJ
In this video we visit the Cassville Cemetery in Cassville, Jackson Township, Ocean County New Jersey. This cemetery is in the rapidly changing and growing town of Jackson in Northern Ocean County. Cassville was once a small rural unincorporated community in Jackson Township, and remained largely rural through the early 21st century. However, in recent years rampant development has altered the nature of the area considerably and is likely to continue.
Cassville cemetery contains the graves of many American servicemembers from several major wars, including the American Revolution, the Civil War, World War I, II, Korea and Vietnam. It holds a high number of veterans who were killed in action, demonstrating the profound sacrifice that many men from Jackson township made for the United States through the generations.
One Revolutionary War Patriot is buried here: Private John Truex. Mr. Truex served as a soldier of the New Jersey Line in the Continental Army. Remarkably, he served the entire war, likely from 1776 to 1783. He was born around 1754, and was likely in his early 20's when the war began and near 30 years old when it ended. He quite literally gave nearly a decade of service to his country in the war for independence. In 1820, he submitted an application for a pension. Mr. Truex was a blacksmith, and claimed that by 1820 (when he was 66 years old) he had grown nearly blind. May we respect and remember this local Revolutionary Patriot who served through the revolution from start to finish.
Another incredible grave is that of Mr. Enoch Burke. Mr. Burke appears to have served with the 12th Tennessee Calvary in the American Civil War. This is worth noting because this unit was one of the few units from Tennessee that served the Union Army. It appears that Mr. Burke was one of many Tennessean's that remained loyal to the union despite the state's decision to secede and join the Confederacy in the conflict. Remarkably, Mr. Burke somehow resettled in New Jersey and then served as an old man in World War One. He died just a few weeks after the war ended in late November, 1918. This was a true American Patriot.
May we always remember, honor and respect the sacrifice of all American Patriots who gave their all for our great country.

The Oldest Brick Structure of any kind in the U.S. to remain a Private Residence, is down the road in Medford, MA - 'The Peter Tufts House'. Built in 1677 it is second only to 'Bacon's Castle', built in 1665 on Plantation property in VA, today a museum. The Peter Tufts House has the oldest Gambrel Roof in the U.S.. It was built of bricks from 'Medford Clay' which would make the town renown for brick making. The bricks are original on the house.

My 6th (Great great great great great great) Grandfather, Benjamin Green fought in the Continental Army under General Washington. He served as a private in the 12th Massachusetts Regiment. His older brother (my great uncle) Thomas Green died in the aftermath of the first battle of the war, Lexington and Concord. My 2nd cousin 5x removed named George Green fought and died in the civil war. He was born in Massachusetts and was an early pioneer, settling in Wisconsin. He fought with a Wisconsin regiment in his 40s and died in 1863 of disease after the Vicksburg Campaign. He is buried in Helena, Arkansas in a military cemetery out west. I am a 13th generation American. So to answer your question, yes.

Thank you for covering the history of Fort Washington. I really enjoyed it as my great Grandfather, George McReary, was one of the Militia who were captured at the battle of Fort Washington. Originally from Ireland, he come to the colonies in 1775, serving as a cabin boy on a British war ship. He then defected and volunteered in the Pennsylvania Militia. Fortunately, as he was imprisoned on a British war ship in New York harbor, a friend of his, who was serving on the ship, looked out for his well-being, probably saving his life.
