- The American Revolution nearly came to a bad end barely a year after it began. New York was set in an archipelago with almost eight hundred miles of waterfront, and the British commanded the sea. Then more than 20,000 British and Hessian troops landed and all of Long Island was lost. The rest of the New York campaign didn’t go much better for the Americans.

The bravery and sacrifice of the Maryland 400 goes unrecognized in their role of fighting a rear guard that allowed the army to retreat. The 400 held the line in the rear guard action and twice counter attacked British troops numbering 2,000 giving Washington enough time to save the army. Twelve survivors made it back to the American army. Family legend claims relatives served in the Maryland Line though the war.. A Continental Army officer is buried near my grandfather in Westminster, Maryland.
Washington only won three of thirteen battles but he won the last one and that’s all that matters. Chess is won when you checkmate the king, not by how many pieces you take or how you lose.

Somehow many are under the assumption Washington lost more battles than he won, Here's the record Victories 8, Siege of Boston, Harlem Heights, Trenton, 2nd Trenton (Assunpink Creek), Princeton, Battle of the Clouds, Whitemarsh and Yorktown. Loses 7, Long Island, Kip's Bay, White Plains, Ft. Washington and Fort Lee, he was not in command at Ft. Washington, but retreated from Ft. Lee, Brandywine and Germantown. Learned my direct paternal 5th great grandfather Matthew Bennett fought here - Lieutenant
of Baxters Pennsylvania Battalion of the Flying Camp, 19th September 1776; taken prisoner at Fort Washington,
16th November 1776; exchanged 8th December 1780, and did not return to the army.
My ancestor William Van Horn was also in Baxter's Flying Camp at Ft. Washington and taken as a POW, he was exchanged fairly quickly and returned to Bucks County and reenlisted in Kirkbride's Bucks Co. Militia Bn. and fought at Germantown. Many like your ancestor if they survived a long imprisonment, their health was so broken they could serve even if they wanted to. Many died within a few years of returning home.
My 6x Great Grandfather Ludwig Mansker was in the Pensalvaynia Rifles under Miles, in the rear where they flanked in Brooklyn, he later died (probably from sickness and hypothermia) at Coryell Ferry (now New Hope) the last week of November 1776.

He likely would have been in my ancestor's company of Mile's Regt. My ancestor Bernhardt Slough was in Capt. Henry Shade's Company at Long Island from Northampton Co. Shade resigned and John McGowan was promoted to Captain, this was the Captain in command at Coryell's Ferry, there is record of my ancestor being at Coryell's Ferry in November in the Pa, Archives. He presumably crossed the Delaware with Gen, Washington, he lost his left leg at Princeton at 19 years old. My cousin is SAR through Bernard Slough.

Fact? The largest battle of the American Revolution did not happen in the USA. The largest battle of the American Revolution happened in Europe. The Americans were backed by Spain and France. The Spanish provided the largest army and navy, in addition to money that paid for the battle in Virginia where General Cornwallis surrendered. The French provided 90 percent of the guns, canons, money, a smaller army and two navies bigger than the Spanish one. The largest battle happened I Gibraltar. The Spanish and French dropped cannons that should of sank the rock. Without Spain and France the Americans would have been LUNCH. Freedom costs blood.

This was a very tough campaign for General Washington and his Continental Army. His ability to hold the army intact in the face of a string of defeats highlights Washington’s skill as a general, even as the battles themselves demonstrate the greenness of the army and failures in leadership at multiple levels including that of Washington. It was the retaining of the army in the field and the blessings of God that saved the American independence. 🇺🇸✝️

Revolution War, was also a Civil War! U.S. Patriot's VS British,& the same Patriot's VS Tory's! I had never heard of Thomas Hickey, or the plot on Washington's Life! Thank Ya'll for this Educational Video! I am going to study it more in future!

Arnold saved his ass at Saratoga
Washinton was not at Saratoga, Horatio Gates was in command, but the credit for the victory at 2nd Saratoga goes to Arnold and Daniel Morgan, two of the best field commanders.

Washington was under close scrutiny from his fellow officers after such a defeat. But he was tremendously out numbered and had an unorganized military group. Nothing went right in New York for the Americans.
