One of my favorite aspects of Cloud is how his ultimate triumph is looking within himself & accepting his true identity as a flawed, ordinary, & imperfect person. He has experienced so much trauma that he has created his own mask to shroud the truth of his weak self from himself, but is able to overcome those things by reconnecting to the parts of his real self that gave him inner strength far before he began his real journey: his biggest desire to be strong for other people. It is not the aspect of strength alone, especially for a boy from Nibelheim who failed to join SOLDIER, but the purpose behind wanting that strength that places Cloud a cut above other characters. He wanted to be noticed as a special existence to Tifa, to have the strength to protect her after she falls off Mt. Nibel, and makes the decision to obtain that strength though joining SOLDIER long before he ever faced off against Sephiroth. And yet, it is the same ordinary boy that was able to best Sephiroth without any special abilities or enhancements. His journey through identity crisis & denialism of his trauma/failures has resonated with me in my life so many times, making it so worth it when he returns to his true self and regains that inner strength. I think it is so monumental that at the end, his own journey of pulling strength from within himself, that raw determination and drive to protect what he cherishes that has always been there since he was young, is mirrored in how the planet ultimately is able to protect itself, by its own inner life blood, and not Holy or anything external. I can’t wait to see what they do when Real Cloud is finally revealed to us in part 3.
