We’re in the Finger Lakes region of Upstate New York. My husband’s cousin bought a new boat and gave us their old one about 18 years ago. We’d just bought a house and 14 acres and were broke. My husband spent all winter, working on the boat, and got it in good condition. This was our “vacation”, driving half an hour to Cayuga Lake. The kids were young and ate constantly. I’d pack lunch meat, pasta salad, salad, bags of chips and created “LakeCake”. It was a box of Aldis cake mix and a cup of chocolate chips sprinkled on top right before it went in the oven. Our oldest son now has his own boat and we met him on the lake last year and the first thing he wanted to know was if I had made a LakeCake. We never hit the lake without it! I loved this video! Thank you!
We were married a few days before Christmas so we usually ride around and look at Christmas lights on our anniversary nights. During the summers, our Friday morning dates are going to garage sales.
Once a month we get together with my husband's brothers and their wives and play cards. Each month we have it at a different home. The hosts make the lunch and we all bring wine and nibbles or dessert. We have so much fun!!
I have people over for dinner and we play Uno, talk about our travels or trips, and they. Bring dessert. Love making a Fondue too! I also like listening to a baseball game on the radio
No way are frugal people boring! I have such a beautiful life with great company and simple pleasures. I am single and in my 40's, and a few weeks ago a group of girlfriends met at a vineyard for a friend's birthday. We each brought an item or two - tortilla chips, cheddar cheese, ripe strawberries - and had a beautiful picnic feast in the Virginia mountains listening to a free concert. And who doesn't have cheese and crackers and an apple in their fridge? It would also make a great date, I think ; ) Miko from Maryland
Hi Emmy and Paul 🙋♀️ My husband and I are frugal for the purpose of paying off bills and become debt free. We love picnics, walks along the lake etc..as long as we’re together. We too have a veggie garden and can’t wait for fresh veggies. Happy Anniversary to you both 💜
Before covid our favorite cheap date idea was going to a square dance! It's usually only $5 or $6 per person for 2 and a half hours of dancing, free food, and fun with friends!
We make tuna salad,or egg salad to make sandwiches with for a picnic!I also divide canned fruit in individual serving containers to pack in the cooler!
Loved your frugal picnic! My husband and I love to watch walking tours of museums and historic sights on TH-cam. We enjoy going to local parks with a picnic or drinks and snacks.
Happy Anniversary! Congratulations to the winner! We live near the National Museum of the Marine Corps where we often attend free concerts by the Marine Band and other armed forces musical groups.
Emmy & Paul, you make me smile so much, you radiate such love & positivity. My favorite thing to do is cook a lovely home cooked meal & then take a walk in nature with my dog.
We love to go to a castle just up the hill from where we live in the UK with a picnic, we have a walk round the perimeter looking out for red squirrels and others creatures then sit on the grounds and eat our food with wonderful views over the Isle of Wight
CONGRATS, Barbara!!!!! This is such a fun, timely, video with the temptation to overspend on going out! We too will take our food and go to the beach here in western Michigan. What a blessing to have in our backyard We watch ships coming and going. Enjoy watching boat traffic and walking our boardwalk. We are so very blessed! Always thinking of you two when I shop our home for new ideas, being food or decor. Love it! I also raise monarch butterflies in the Summer with my Grands for no spend entertainment! What an adventure Thank you Paul and Emmy for your wonderful channel ❤️. Happy Anniversary!
Oh thank you both! I never thought I would win what a blessing I love your videos I feel lucky!! Thank you again love this channel I feel like your my friends and all your tips and just every thing I have learn. I will email you tommor after work.Again thank you both and Dixie of cause..
Happy anniversary Emmie and Paul. In retirement for my husband and I everyday is a fun adventure .We are frugal because I believe it is social and morally necessary to live lightly on the earth. I remembered when we first were married and I made Bisquick pizza with salami, canned mushrooms and cheese as our special treat for Friday night and watched a movie. That was early 1970 for us.
Earlier In the year I bought a science center pass for $75. It works at other science centers around the country. I used it twice this past week at an out of town museum after dropping off a friend. Each visit would have cost me $50 without the pass. We brought our own lunch and turtle food. We ate our lunch on the water and the children fed the turtles. The kids wanted ice cream while we were out and about. The shop wanted $5 a piece. I ran into dollar general and got 6 fudge pops for $4! The kids were just as happy. I love hiking when the weather is cool and playing frisbee golf. Happy anniversary ❤️ free outdoor concerts are the best! Yummy meal you packed.
Great date night ideas. Our plan for some summer date nights is going to be to pack a picnic and go see some free local concerts that our city is having on Friday nights. We recently celebrated our 33rd wedding anniversary by having a "staycation". We binged watched a few shows on Netflix, made some simple meals etc. We told everyone we were going out of town and had our teenager spend the weekend at our adult daughters house but really just enjoyed the time home alone together.
Hi we usually like to go to our free concerts in a town too it our treat to eat out to eat some inexpensive life pizza taco salads we meet so many lovely people looks like u both had a great time today is my birthday so I will be celebrating with family u both are blessings
Happy Anniversary! Beautiful garden and it will certainly save you some money at the store. Wonderful date night food and entertainment and other picnic ideas. Thank you for sharing these happy, creative tips.
Hi guys! Love these ideas. My BF and I will pack a picnic lunch with thermoses of drinks and head out on the motorcycle for the day. We usually end up at A waterfall or state park, some times Lake George and have a beautiful day out. We always take advantage of our free concerts in our town as well as the surrounding towns during the summer months. We never know where we will end up. If it's free we will be there.. ( Farmer's markets always have free samples and live local bands or artists playing, Free paint and sips, or free events at out local library). We as well have started our own garden this year, Small container garden for the first time. We have 2 tomato plants and 2 pepper plants as well as we have regrown celery this year.. Can't wait to enjoy our fruits of our labor. Happy 4TH!
Hi Emmy and Paul, thanks for another great video! I knownPail loves tortilla chips, you can use your fresh tortillas to make Paul some chips! So many recipes out there. Loved your picnic ideas too!
My daughter and I love nature so we go to the New York Botanical Garden. If you show your a resident of the area you get free general admission. It's beautiful and something is always in bloom. We take a snack and lunch and enjoy for free.
You look amazing in those colors!! Looks like you had a blast at the concert too. Congratulations on your anniversary. Your love for one another shines through. There are so many free festivals this time of year in our community: free taco day, family day on the river, art museums, strawberry festivals, air balloons. The list goes on and on. I enjoy walks and picnics in the many parks nearby. Last week we went to the river, sat on the riverbed and watched the skiers and wakeboarders. Just being in the sun and smelling the water makes me so happy. A plain ole sandwich and chips just tastes better outside at a picnic or on the patio.
Something we enjoy that not everyone would. We own some woodsy acres about 45 minutes from our house. We enjoy driving up there by the back roads about quarterly and strolling around them, picking wildflowers or bringing rocks home for our rock garden or just seeing what is new on those roads. Has anyone built anything since the last time? Thankfully there is rarely any trash along “our” borders. Exercise and the air is so good up there in the hills.
Happy anniversary! I have raspberry bushes that crept over from my neighbors. I have frozen some since I had a great yield. I made raspberry waffles for the first time.
Hello!I believe that you can’t be happy and having fun with zero money or with little money…the joy in life is not depend if your life is frugal or not,but what person you are, what things you do with your friends or other family members to spend time together..all is in the mind..frugal living doesn’t stay at home and fill my banking account and that’s my only think I do.But spend a healthy and enjoy life without giving my money in thinks that I didn’t need at all..(I am not a frugal person, but I beginning to start day by day to change my but habits, and I no that’s a lot of them, your channel is one of my favourite 😍 you kind and lovely authentic good people).kisses from beautiful Greece 🇬🇷
Hi Emmy and Paul Happy Anniversary to you. Thank you so much for your videos they are a gift to us. Your videos, your tips and tricks, your positive vibes make such a huge difference in this wild time. I have learned so much from you and can't wait for the next time. Please keep up the good work, the world needs more people like you.😘❤️
Happy Anniversary and congrats on 25,000 subscribers! I have 2 frugal date night suggestions. First we often go to a boat dock and watch the boats come in and go out. The second idea is if possible to move a tv or laptop outside on a porch or in your yard for outdoor movie night. We do not have a drive In nearby so we make our own. 😊
Just watched this again and thought of something about your picnic foods that is a good idea. You said to freeze grapes before you go. You can freeze grapes, blueberries, strawberries, and many other fruits and use them like ice cubes in your water, iced tea, lemonade, or any fruity drink in the summer. They keep your drinks cold and by the time you get to the end of your drink they are thawed and make a nice cold treat at the end of your drink.
I can't recall which heirloom tomato had a leaf like the one you were questioning, but it definitely was a tomato. I know the first time I grew that variety I was amazed at the strange leaf.
Your videos are always so positive and helpful. I love the way you think outside-of-the-box with so many things. But you make it simple at the same time. Some suggestions people give are so complicated and time-consuming that it’s worth the money to just go the easy way out and spend the money. You guys have a different take on it. Great!! The big news in my world today is that as of the end of the day today I will be a retired person! I cannot believe it’s finally here. 😀😀😀My job was so draining. I feel like I will have my life back. So much of why people spend a lot of money on things like a picnic is because they just don’t have the time or the energy to prepare even a simple selection of foods to bring. Working way too hard. I believe it’s better to work less and cut back on spending to accommodate that. Time is something we will never get back. I do think that people should plan so that they can retire as early as possible- without making their lives crazy in the process by being overly frugal. Frugality is still doing some things that you want to do and spending money where it matters to you. You just have to be careful about the stupid spending that we all are guilty of doing so often. That stupid spending is what takes our money away. Anyone can retire if they plan for it. I am so happy to be getting my life back. At 62 years old I just don’t have the energy to do the things that I did when I was 30. So having more time is especially important to me now. I can’t wait to wake up tomorrow morning knowing I never have to go back to work again unless I choose to take a little side job. It’s truly a freeing feeling!
I cut my hubby's old T shirts into strips for tying up our tomatoes. Works great for my 50-60 tomato plants. I am even using the T shirt strips to tie up my new climbing roses to train them up a fence panel. Happy Anniversary to you two. We just celebrated ours 2 weeks ago. We kept it simple, with foods we love. And we enjoyed a good Italian wine with it, that we got really cheap from a wine club introductory offer that we got for Christmas gifts for each other, then canceled the membership. And now we have lots of great varieties for a years worth of special occasions, at $5.67 per bottle. 😀
You are so right about changing up where you eat even the simplest meal can make the day fun. We love eating outside on our patio when it’s warm or cool enough… the hummingbird birds entertain us all year long
We like being frugal so that we can have fun when we want to and also prepare for the future. We love to use the free movie/tv apps for entertainment. We love to garden and preserve said garden. And when you are surrounded by people you love, you realize tons of money isn't a necessity to have fun.
I really enjoy your nature pictures at the beginning of each video. They really exemplify the principle of enjoying life without spending money. So much beauty when you just look closely in your own backyard!
Hello Emmy,I always enjoy the very beginning of your videos with all the flowers and birds etc, thank you so much for helping me take just a moment out of my busy heptic life!
Your daylilles look beautiful! It is great your garden is coming along so well. You will reap the rewards later this summer and fall (and even over the winter). Happy anniversary to you and Paul! Glad you enjoyed your picnic with your family!
The next town to us has a local market that donates a different meal one night a month. It might be spaghetti meal with meat balls, hot, or mild and lots of fresh vegetables for a salad, pickles of different kinds. Dressings for salad about 6 different kinds, breads of different kinds, Coffee, Tea, lemonade, and ice cold water. Always fresh vegetables for salad. Bean supper with red hot dogs Maine loves their red hot dogs. It might be a ham supper with all the trimmings. One day last year we had a Boston Ham, l didn't know there was Boston Ham. I mentioned to the pastor of the church that Boston Ham was my first and it was the best ham l have ever had. The Pastor gave me two big thick cooked pieces to take home. He wouldn't let me refused. That I will never forget. oh ya we have a dessert table with fruit, pies, cakes, cookies, and ice cream. . No kidding, got to close for now.
Hello! Congratulations to Barbara on the giveaway! Our frugal fun usually involves food or our dog, Sophie. We’ve done several staycations in the last few years and go to one of the higher end grocery stores to pick out food we wouldn’t normally buy for a few small meals and treats during that week. We have a vacation budget and take the money from there. Also there are so many beautiful parks in our area that have creeks or streams which our dog loves to go in. (Strangely she refuses to use the kiddie pool we bought her and hates baths.🤔). Finally, we both love to read so we decided to visit each branch of our library system, some of which are in historical buildings. Kind of like a summer reading program, but for grownups. We gave ourselves several months to accomplish this, though. We plan to get a map from our first branch to check off our stops. Happy belated anniversary, may God grant you many years together.
Happy anniversary and many, many more! Congratulations to the winner! For a frugal date night we just each have our favorite beverage, cook a homemade meal, put on some music and shut the tv off and just enjoy each others company. I always feel rushed if we are out at a restaurant anyways. This way we can take our time!
I tried the idea of rooting the suckers I pulled off the tomato plants and they are growing roots! We have such a long hot season in eastern NC that I’m sure I will get harvest. Thx for passing on the tip! All winter I direct composted into my empty raised beds and I unintentionally have a 4x4 plot of all potatoes! I don’t even know what kind yet. So excited about that happy accident and the surprises that will come during the harvest. I think that’s what you have as well!
Happy Anniversary Emmy and Paul! What a wonderful way to spend your anniversary. For our date nights, we usually go to a local car cruise. We grab dinner out -usually a Dairy Queen meal deal. ($12 for both of us) LOL Then walk around the cruise and look at all the beautiful cars. When we get home, we sit on our swing and watch the traffic go by and talk about our day.
Hi Emmy and Paul, greetings from Massachusetts! My wife and I love to watch your videos together. We set our tablet on the kitchen table in the morning and enjoy your company via TH-cam while we have our coffee. We are on our own frugal journey and currently we're trying to pay off our mortgage as quickly as humanly possible. Your channel gives us so much inspiration to keep going, and on top of that you both seem so fun- loving and kind. When we watch your videos it's like sitting with a friend. As a side note, it's funny because we have very similar kitchens so it really feels like we're sitting in the same room. We also have yellow walls with white wainscoting, oak cabinets with a beige stone countertop, and a collection of Pyrex bowls. It's pretty funny. Anyway, I hope you had a wonderful anniversary, and thank you for putting all your great ideas and positive energy out into the world!
Loved this video! Me and my fiance met at the start of 2019 so it wasn't to long ago but I'm sure in the future it will be so nice to look back at movies from that year! I'm frugal because I want to live below my means and get my mortgage paid off ASAP! I just put a lump sum on the loan yesterday and it took nearly 3 years off the term, I turn 30 in August and plan on putting another lump sum on for my birthday 😂 I wouldn't be able to do that without being frugal so thanks for keeping me motivated!
Happy Anniversary! I pulled a tomato sucker off one of my plants, put it in a glass of water, sat it by my bedroom window and it has roots on it. Hopefully I will have some homegrown tomatoes for Fall 😊
Frugal, shop-at-home fun....Hoopla audio books, watching our own DVD's on Friday nights (dinner and a movie in our living room), walks and bike rides, grilling hot dogs at our neighborhood lake/picnic area, looking at our photo albums, and s'mores made from whatever we have...crackers/peanut butter/marshallmallows/chocolate or whatever. A frugal but not free idea we try to do once per summer...a grocery store picnic. We pack drinks, napkins, plates, and silverware, then stop at a grocery store and we each get to pick about $5 worth of ready to eat items for our picnic! It's so much fun! We've chosen individual marked-down salads from the deli, popcorn shrimp from the deli, a nice yogurt, a piece of deli pizza, a nut/seed packet, etc. Our son used to really enjoy this because he could pick his own food. :). Then we take the food to a park or the Ohio riverfront and have a picnic. No work for Mom, and fun for all. :)
Happy Anniversary!!! Your garden looks amazing. Picnics are wonderful and sooo enjoyable with all the veggies, cheese, lettuce slice tomatoes, crackers, chips, left over toasted bread. I could go for so many ideas. Going to beach or park. All are great! Life is to short not to enjoy life without money! Cruising the coast!! That is an amazing free events. Of course they have some things that cost but I have sooo much with all the antique cars, band with country music, 50’s, rock and roll! It’s amazing!!
I use Epsom salt mixed in when I water my vegetable plants. Just about a Tablespoon a gallon helps the plants get full nutrition out of the soil. My plants usually have a really good yield and lush foliage. And, if I overdo gardening, I have a hot soapy bath with about a half cup of Epsom salts in it! 😄👍
Congratulations Emmy and Paul. There is a Special Walk( learn- and Art and fun),in the Woods nearby. The Kids Loved it. I went there for the Birthday Party from our youngest so'n. There all Ended in a little water. And they Had so much fun. It was great!

I’m just retiring and really enjoy living more simple. I’ve decluttered, organized and now I’m down to basics.❤
So wonderful, Susan!
I love when you get mystery plants!
So fun!

I'm sure there are Square dance clubs near you!
Hike around my land and creek hunting pretty rocks and flowers. It never gets old. 😁

Wow what great ideas. Thanks so much for sharing. I am single so I celebrate myself. I take walks with my pup. I go to the movies.
Thank you so much
Happy Anniversary friends!
Thank you so much Linda!
Oh that sounds so fun! Great idea thank you!
Happy Belated Anniversary! You're both Wonderful xxx
Thanks so much! 😊
Happy Anniversary 🌷 😊! I'm hoping it's very special for you all! I so enjoy the videos!
Thanks so much!
Happy Anniversary!! We like to play board games!!
Thanks so much!
Great idea! Love that!
Paul has awesome knife skills.
Congratulations on your Anniversary you two are such a lovely couple.
Thanks so much!
Blessings on your Anniversary! 💐
Thanks so much!
I can't recall which heirloom tomato had a leaf like the one you were questioning, but it definitely was a tomato. I know the first time I grew that variety I was amazed at the strange leaf.
LOL! Some are saying it might be Brandywine!
Congratulations! Woo hoo! So very very happy for you
I cut my hubby's old T shirts into strips for tying up our tomatoes. 😀
Love that! So fun Elizabeth!
Fun program!
Happy Anniversary guys! And congratulations to the draw winner!
Thank you!
You are so right about changing up where you eat even the simplest meal can make the day fun. We love eating outside on our patio when it’s warm or cool enough… the hummingbird birds entertain us all year long
Aren't those beauties the best!
Location location location for a picnic! We love picnics down by the lake or trickling pond or stream! So enjoyable hearing nature about its business!
Couldn't agree more!
Love your garden!!! Happy anniversary
Thanks so much!
We like being frugal so that we can have fun when we want to and also prepare for the future. We love to use the free movie/tv apps for entertainment. We love to garden and preserve said garden. And when you are surrounded by people you love, you realize tons of money isn't a necessity to have fun.
Absolutely right! Thanks so much!
I really enjoy your nature pictures at the beginning of each video. They really exemplify the principle of enjoying life without spending money. So much beauty when you just look closely in your own backyard!
So very true! Thanks so much!
Beautiful music!
Hello Emmy,I always enjoy the very beginning of your videos with all the flowers and birds etc, thank you so much for helping me take just a moment out of my busy heptic life!
Thanks so much for watching Lisa!
Thanks so much Rosemary!
Seriously, what great ideas! Love your staycation ideas! Thank you so much for sharing
Happy anniversary to you both. My hubby and I will be celebrating our 41st anniversary September 9th
Oh how wonderful! Thank you!
Love that! Paul and I need to slow down our dinner times a bit...summer time there is always so much to do LOL
Yes! That's so fun! Thanks!
Thanks so much! Love your date night idea Tammy!
Happy anniversary 🎉🎊🎈🎂🎁
Thank you Karen!
LOL! I love this comment! Thanks so much for sharing your mornings with us! We appreciate your kind words!
Also, Happy Anniversary!
Thanks so much!
Eden that is absolutely wonderful! Good for you! Thank you so much for being part of our frugal family!
Happy Anniversary! I pulled a tomato sucker off one of my plants, put it in a glass of water, sat it by my bedroom window and it has roots on it. Hopefully I will have some homegrown tomatoes for Fall 😊
YAY!! Thanks so much!
If you put a sucker in the ground, doesn't a new plant grow?
Love that! So fun! Thanks so much!
Happy Anniversary To You Both. 🙂
Thank you!
Your garden is looking great. Happy Anniversay 💘 Emmy & Paul 💘

Thanks and welcome Linda! So happy you found us!
Sounds so fun! Thanks so much!
Oh wow! Thanks for sharing!
Happy Anniversary
Emmy and Paul!!!
🥳🥳🥳🥳
Thanks so much!
We have a wonderful free zoo in my town. In the summer we walk through the zoo regularly. Lots of places to stop and have a picnic.
