Nothing like the Right Tools. I just put a Yamaha ATV rear end under my John Deere and switched to a 700 Peerless right angle 5 speed transmission. Now I have rear suspension and excellent breaks. True I had to build a Subframe to mount the Yamaha But I don't have to worry about the rear end. The only weak point now Is the 700 transmission.

I will though but mines a bit newer than that one and I'll clamp it to hold things together then start welding away and block other stuff with pieces of wood so weld splatters don't hit but first before welding anything take off all the rubber seals on the axles
Awesome, just went online and bought a spare gear for my transaxle for $12 that should lock mine, I had to order new oil seals anyway, figured I'd lock it while I had it apart. Nice option for people like myself without a welder.
That is a great idea. I always welded the spiders to the ends of the shaft but if you don't have a welder handy or whatever, I think this idea of yours is better... good video
Thanks! i cant take all the credit, i know doc sprocket did it with a peerless 920, but with some persistence, you can lock it with the heavier duty gears. i do plan to remake this video with clearer instructions and better views. and less breathing hahahah

Long term do those spider gears start wearing from having a 3rd or 4th wedged in to stop the others. There is still a little play every time you go from forward to reverse so I am wondering how those spiders hold up from the constant jerking back and fourth from being wedged to stop them vs. welding them. Have you re-checked one you did like that after a lot of use to see how they were holding up?
they have not worn out yet, still installed on the tractor with about the same amount of play, i have not opend one, but the back-forth jerking would not be any more stress than normal, because there is still play when the diff is open, the extra stress would be from turning on pavement or rock crawling, where the gears are binding as intended, so i feel, with a lot of abuse on my off roader, and two others i have done this to, this is a long term solution and will hold up to anything a welded diff would take, and i might dare say possibly stronger.
Here's my transaxle transmission hydro gear 150071 319-0650 that's the one I might weld up and I have 2 others and a 5 speed. take the axles out clean it off then weld it up clean it off again and reinstall back in the oil case and see if it makes it slower
no its not easy at all with the i think it was 13 tooth spider gears. might be mistaken, but if you have the i think 16 tooth gears its alot eaiser! haha
finaly, thought i was the only one, any ways i have stuck 2 in the first time i tried the extra spiders 2 years ago, it is a puzzle, it still works, i had to shave the sides down on the last one, kept pushing my axles out
lol, I just welded my dif the "traditional way", it broke in like 2 minutes. (probably because I was using a stick welder with rods that were for mild steel. so I just welded all the spider gears together and it seems to be holding up. good idea with the added spider gear.

How long did the welding stick together and what's the point of locking it up once i know why people do it I'll understand better will I mow the yard faster or what
@@Mike-su8si it will make your rear wheels spin at the same speed all the time so it wont give more torque to your outer wheel when making a turn and ut wont tear your grass up
That (little washer) you left out was the thrust washer which takes the end thrust and stops the spider gear from wearing the casing away you goose !!!!!
To find an extra spider gear, you can sometimes find some online, but best way is to get a spare transmission. try craigslist. make sure you get the same tooth count you need
Mainly the idea that you don't need specialty tools or major skills to do it. Mind you also this was long time ago and welders were a little less cheap and easy to get. Just gotta fiddle with it for a bit haha
Need suggestions for adding an extra ground to my grandpas 93 Sears Craftsman 18hp opposed twin. It’s a speed…not sure if it has a parasitic draw occurring or if the battery is draining faster due to starter age? The battery that manual called for was 230cca which I have sense replaced with a 275cca…should I return and get 300cca? Appreciate any feedback…and Thank you for the informative content. So it cranks ok when battery is charged, but battery died quickly, does it die after one or two starts or after several? Am I understanding the main issue correctly?
@@restore56 Trying to determine what would cause the battery to not charge correctly while on the mower? Before the motor fire up (not instantly but a few seconds of turning the key). About six months ago I began noticing that while trying to start the motor I felt the negative cable grounding bolt located on the frame was really warm (left side next to battery). Also appeared that the battery would need to be charged more frequently in order to get the motor fire up. As of late the motor will only spin but not actually fire up. Had the battery tested and it was dead…it was only two years old (Walmart 230 CCA). I read reviews stating their lawn tractor batteries have a short life span although I remember other lawn tractor batteries lasting longer ….so I bought another battery that is 275 CCA but have not yet installed it as I want to make sure I have wiring/ground concerns taken care of. I’m not entirely sure if the battery draining was caused by starter beginning wear out, ground issue or if the battery cca were not high enough thus straining the battery etc….apologies for be long winded response. Open to suggestions for adding an extra ground strap (size gauge, where to mount it etc) also any areas to inspect….Thanks again
I locked it using this method, but have a shitty time trying to turn, it wants to push forward regardless if the front tires are turned, makes it a pain in the ass when trying to cut the grass with it. Does yours have any problem steering after locking the diff? I thought about making some wheel weights out of cement and seeing if extra weight would help but IDK, I may just disassemble it and remove the gear.
Matt Casdorph this is a side-effect of a solid locked diff. For off roaders it's not as noticable, I would not recommend for a cutting machine unless your using it for more traction demanding situations, but to help reduce it pushing, add weight to the front or reduce weight in the rear. U want the fronts to have more traction or the rears to have less so they can force one of the rear wheels to skid a little.
this is a side-effect of a solid locked diff. when done to off-roaders, its not as cumbersome, especially with a heavier engine up front, i would not normally recommend a locked diff for a grass cutter unless your using it for some pretty demanding tasks, but if you want to keep it locked, add weight to the front, or remove weight from the back. you want the rear wheels to be able to skid a little when turning. good luck.
+Matt Casdorph - DO NOT LOCK IT, if you are still using to do Garden things... Like Mowing, etc.... You only LOCK THIS for " Off Road " or " Riding Only ".

Nope! Still trucking. I run about 12 mph top, but it's holding up good. I've since put 23in stryker atv tires on, and those have been sweet, and no complaints from axle
just look up your model and buy a spare off ebay, 12 bucks for a spare gear (same gear part number as the other spider gears on the diagram will guarantee the right fit), still cheaper than some would charge to weld it.
Mike M I actually had cleaned it the best I could with what I had. this transmission is still working its ass of in my tractor with no problems at all.
Those are split open with flathead screwdrivers all of the time. There is no gasket in between just old RTV a screwdriver will not hurt it and gets the job done. Its also why the have a notch in the back to pry it apart gently with a flat screwdriver, pry bar what have you. You can sit their with a hammer all day it may not open with out a little pry action, its done very gently and they pop fast and easy. He's fine.
Due to the heavy duty version of the pearles used spider gears that have an odd number of teeth, and that makes it almost impossible to fit two extra in. If you use the even number spider gears, you can fit two
it wont, once properly assembled, it is locked in place, i still have this installed in my murray and its still as solid as when i first installed it, but the problem is yes, welding would work, but with everything, IF done Properly, with a quality welder, and good skill. with lack of either, one resorts to other means. my first tranny i welded with a 120 harbor freight welder, (all we could afford) and my VERY limited skill and prep work. that weld later broke, and by then my skills or welder did not get much better, so i looked into other means.
I am a ASE Master tech, I have a Brick nose f150 and a 68 mercury cougar, and i still have this old tractor! broke this transmission a few times by now. all still built with this gear jam locker.
Held up great! Ended up breaking the trans case. But the diff held and didn't cause the damage. I've since put some striker tires on it, and was pulling vines with the tractor. Ended up hitting hit a little to hard. I've rebuilt it with same axles and diff, with some bearings on the axle shafts this time.
Stole it from another transaxle. Note that there are two different sizes, I believe it is 16 tooth vs 13 tooth. The 13 is stronger, but difficult to line up properly.
Ok cool so u only put in one spider gear right not two . I love this idea I am not a big fan of welding the gears they just don't last it is a stupid material they make them out of
u can weld them... I grind deep grooves into the gear where it meets the shaft and make sure fill those with weld... but in a lot of cases if u use the right spiders u can get two in there.. I think with this trans(mst) in order to get 2 in u actually need to grind the backs of the spiders round to match the contour of the inside of the bull gear.. but in my 930 the gear is square inside and 2 extra spider gears fit with no problems (granted u have the right parts)
check out my vids if u interested... I just finished my newest atlt build its a craftsman body on murray frame with almost full suspension... I've never seen anyone do it the way I did and it's actually lighter than the Murray tractor I started with
personally I would be trying to reduce the amount of moving breakable parts in the rear end rather than adding more. look into the doc locker set up if you want reliability.
Hahaha For the broken case? No I didn't forget those, while putting the top half on one of the bushings with the tab on it rotated and caused it to crack once it got in a mud hole hah

Joshua Luke well I'm sorry but something either the bushings in the jack shafts or the spider gears were miss aligned causing abnormal stress leading to it hand-Grenading itself
New ones are about 150. There used to be new ones for that but the used market has many. You will want to match the last digit of the "MST-20x-xxxy" y will be a letter from A to E. There internals usually survive so you swap in your old internals with the new case.
dude you need to go through these projects before you do videos, people will get frustrated watching you.it will take the stress off you and make it enjoyable, i got tired watching you battle this.you got promise for sure just do your homework. keep at it you will get it and you speak really plain and easy to understand and thats a good thing..cheers
consider at this time i was in middle school, and did not have the funds or skills for a welder. this was a solution i found online, and posted about how i accomplished it. its a compromise.
where you stopped is where you should have started. you know you blew the video so after you figure it out toss the old vid and go again. don't put out something that you already know is bad. people see all the bloopers and, as the Japanese put it, you 'lose face'. good try, but next time don't show all the 'not for prime time' stuff, ok?

It's not as much difficult as it is just being patient with it, Id say it's a pretty good option for those who don't have access to a welder

everytime you lock a transaxle or rear diff in anything they want to plow because you no longer have a differential.

Best bet is too take get a different transaxle form another lawn mower and take the spider gears out of it that’s what I would do

What happens if you use a different size/ different spider gear?
they will not fit, you will not be able to line them up so they can sit properly.

Probably not to well at all. It might just uninstall itself in about 13.762 seconds flat. I'll let ya know once I get wound up that high!

Welding would have worked what happens if the extra spider gear works loose could rip the whole Trans apart

Would this mod work in an automotive diff?
Vaios Kaliakoudas no. This is specifically for lawn tractor transaxels, automotive diffs are designed differently and will not work with such a metiod

Joshua Luke well I'm sorry but something either the bushings in the jack shafts or the spider gears were miss aligned causing abnormal stress leading to it hand-Grenading itself
New ones are about 150. There used to be new ones for that but the used market has many. You will want to match the last digit of the "MST-20x-xxxy" y will be a letter from A to E. There internals usually survive so you swap in your old internals with the new case.
Basically, it MUST BE the SAME TOOTH COUNT !!!

consider at this time i was in middle school, and did not have the funds or skills for a welder. this was a solution i found online, and posted about how i accomplished it. its a compromise.
should of practiced a bit more before posting but yeah i'll stick with the welder..

Well, considering you don't need to fabricate or weld anything, the. Skill level is relatively low.
where you stopped is where you should have started. you know you blew the video so after you figure it out toss the old vid and go again. don't put out something that you already know is bad. people see all the bloopers and, as the Japanese put it, you 'lose face'. good try, but next time don't show all the 'not for prime time' stuff, ok?
