    Cleaning the heatsink (the intake of which was about 1/4 blocked by dust) and fan and applying fresh thermal paste really made a difference. It solved the fan noise and our PS4 Pro now runs quietly. In our case I suspect cleaning the heatsink made most of the difference. The instructions were very good. Thank you for posting Matt.

    I was so nervous and stressed about this and every other video seemed to skip steps and I need details, to see every move. I followed your video and then loaded up Tales of Arise which last week caused my PS4 Pro to sound like an Apollo mission. Now, it's silent.

    I cannot thank you enough for this video. I've seen a few others that are maybe 5-10 minutes long. This was so thoughtful and concise. I am not mechanically inclined was still able to complete this work in >1 hour. That includes the fact that I had a model with several differences. I went from jet engine PS4 pro to silent. It's amazing.
    Side note - It's probably not worth buying that 70$ tool set. Just get the 3 tools you use. I didn't use anything else from it, and just used a mini flat head and tweezers of my own.

    Great video, but be careful when disconnecting the white cord that goes from the power supply to the motherboard. It can rip the connector off of the motherboard altogether. Found out the hard way unfortunately. Turns out, that happens quite a bit. A lot of repair videos on that also on TH-cam.

      Ditto. I was even using needle nose pliers. Probably would be worth also supporting the connector on the board as well, for next time. Learned that one the hard way. Time to try and fix it with my shaky hand and no microscope 😱

    This absolutely saved my butt and made an ENORMOUS difference! Even for a beginner like me, I didn't even have a spare screw leftover hahaha
    For me one main issue was the thermal paste splooshed out the sides and onto the circuit board. Leaving little to none where it needed to be. After scooping up the splooshed paste and putting it where it should be, it made a huge difference.
    Thanks for the great video and help!

      Now I'm sure it will be a waste of money:
      Ordered two heatsinks for RAM, they came 2-3 months after the order was placed and as the "thermal adhesion compound" there was just a two sided see-through tape. I wonder how's that supposed to work as a thermal pad.
      Well, luckily I was ordering those heatsinks just for the purpose of trying out and aesthetics, and not because I actually needed heatsinks for my RAM, but nevertheless.

    Dude, thank you for this video, I have the same model and mine is laud since I 1st used it, so I highly suspect it's bad application of the thermal paste, like the one on your video, that was awfully misapplied.
    Even though I suspected, as you, someone opened it before you, because that heatsink copper plate had some strange scratches, I still think that's probably the case, misapplied thermal paste.
    Or is it normal to have all that scratch on the copper side of the heatsink? It didn't look like scratches to make more surface, LOL, looked like someone roughly cleaned it, with something pointy actually, like trying to remove dry, kinda glued thermal paste.

    • @linklooklisten
      @linklooklisten  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yea sounds like something abrasive may have been used while cleaning it. Something like that could be bad because it makes the surface ever so slightly uneven, but it will only be a problem if your system continues to be loud. Make sure the screws for the heatsink are tightened evenly and you should be ok.

    i ended up getting scared around 7:17 one of my screws slipped and wouldn’t catch anymore, i was using a #0 and everything it i just bought thermal paste and pads and an air can this was the perfect video after months of researching i thought i had it,is there a way for me to get that stripped screw out? i just ripped off my warranty stickers so i am currently sh***ing bricks

      Try a larger Philips bit or flat head in a straight spot of the head of the screw. Could also try putting a rubber band between the screw and screwdriver and try that way, rubber band should fill in the space on the screw. Worst case a pair of pliers, possibly needle nose small enough to fit in the screw head and try turning it.

    My PS4 pro (model 7115B) was loud right out of the box. I took it apart and seen the heat sink was filthy with dust and basically suffocating the console. After clearing out the dust it was noticeably better and I could feel the hot air rushing out the back of the console and the jet engine fan was a LITTLE less obnoxious. 6 years later I find out about thermal pads and paste being the main issue and I am not pleased about having to repair something that's basically been broken before I even got it out of the box... but at least now I know why all this is going on and can actually do something about it when I can afford to.

      Definitely frustrating for sure. I've been there a few times and kind of see it as an additional part of the experience when getting a console, new or used. It's not for everyone, but I absolutely love opening stuff up, learning about it in terms of what makes it work and how to fix it. Playing games on the console is one hobby, and fixing/repairing is a whole other hobby!

    If you put some type of oil on the fan dust will not adhere to it like a light coating of WD-40 something like that keeps the fan from being a magnet for dust I would pay a lot of attention to the fan clean it get off the foundation that dust has been collecting on make it smooth and clean as possible.

    They need a filter system for these consoles to make it easier to clean them or they just want them to burn out so you buy another one.

    • @linklooklisten
      @linklooklisten  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've encountered this before. You could try keeping the system upright instead of flat. If that doesn't work, you have to look at the sensor that the button touches and shave off a little bit of the surface of the sensor. You could also tape over the sensor and use the eject option in the menu system instead.

    When cleaning where the thermal paste should be with the alcohol dipped qtips, should you dry the area with something to take off whatever wetness is left from the alcohol?

    • @linklooklisten
      @linklooklisten  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Let the alcohol air dry before putting thermal paste on, or you can use a dry qtip. Just make sure there's none of the qtip fuzzies on the chip before applying paste.

    I started it and got the jetengine.
    Of couse i thought about cleaning it.
    A lot of dust inside and it smelled like tobacco.
    After i finised cleaning the jetengine was away.
    But in summertimes and long playing it came back.
    So i opened everything again and applied thermal paste MX-6
    Now its silend but im waiting for summer again.
    Need i new heatpads?
    Then would be everything done?

    Also does cpu have to be completely dry to put the thermal paste cuz when you removed alcohol it looks wet and you put the thermal paste sort of in a wet state

    • @linklooklisten
      @linklooklisten  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      it's not wet, it's dried and there were streaks which is nothing to worry about. takes seconds for alcohol to dry.

    Very Nice vídeo! Very instructive! So i bought my PS4 pro from July 2020, when do you think should i open, clean and replace the thermal paste? I bought the grizzly kryonaut paste because i thought that this was the cause of the loud, but there wasnt ( i Just placed the console on a Airy place and the noise goes off). So, do you recommend me to open the 1 year console even so? How long should i first open, clean and change the thermal paste? Thank you sorry my bad english

    • @linklooklisten
      @linklooklisten  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It really depends on how often it's used and other variables like if it's in an enclosed tv stand and if you have pets. Moving it to an open area like you said you did is a good move, if you have pets there might be a lot of dust and hair in there which will clog up the vents and heat sink. If it's loud at all, I would suggest opening it to at least clear out whatever dust and hair has accumulated. If it's still loud after that, apply fresh thermal paste.

    • @lucasparzanini9658
      @lucasparzanini9658 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I wasn’t trying to clean it I was trying to see what was wrong because I would turn it on and then load into a game and then the PS4 would just turn off. There is a sound coming from the power supply and it turns on but makes the same sound and then beeps 3 times and turns off. Idk what’s happening can you help

    • @linklooklisten
      @linklooklisten  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Might need to tighten the clamp that holds the CPU in place, might have become loose. If it isn't that, the power supply might need to be replaced.

      As long as the ribbon can be detached from both ends, you can count how many lines it has. When you look for a replacement ribbon, make sure it's the same amount.

    I did both slim and pro latest models but they still sound loud. A couple games that weren't before make the fan spin hard now. The pro was the only one that had that issue now both have it when I thought I fixed them 😅 Applied themal paste, cleaned heat sink , new thermal pads( they were having trouble sticking to metal) and cleaned the fan literally took both apart slim first then pro. Do you think there is anything else that can be done? Fan spinning way too fast still during some games same with the slim never had issues with slim before disassembly it just needed a clean. Owned them for 3 years
