  • While in Folkston, GA filming trains on Memorial Day, I got a chance to take a tour of a brand new Union Pacific C45aH made in March, 2014! The engineer of a parked freight train said he wouldn't tell anyone if I took a peak inside. It was amazing in the cab but it was so quick because I didn't want to take advantage of the engineer's generosity! Also, I caught the long freight train departing Folkston while waiting for the Amtrak Silver Meteor. PURELY AMAZING!

How Nice of you filming that Union Pacific C45AH that's awesome & new too, I realize that when I first watched the video that year, I only saw a tour of the train, but at least I've watched the entire video this time & year, Thanks again.

In the 1970's growing up in Hamlet, NC my friends and I use to love walking the tracks. One day a a train(Seaboard Coastline Railroad) had stopped and had been awaiting a yellow to proceed. My friend yelled up at the engineer, asking if we could come up and look around. The engineer said it was OK. We were middle school age and we climbed up and got introduced to the fireman and brakeman. The tour was great. When the call came for the train to proceed, the engineer showed me how to release the brake and move the throttle to each notch to get the train moving and to sound the horn. It was a slow ride, but we rode that train until it had to stop again just prior to entering the yard at which point we had to get off. God bless that engineer for his kindness shown to my friends and I during the Summer of '73.

Good for you! I recall being a kid many years ago and getting permission to come up for a look too. There weren't video cameras then like now, so no video for me. It's important that young people get to experience these kind of things. Now you have an appreciation for railroading which may very well last a lifetime. Trust me, when you're 80 you'll remember being up in that locomotive, you'll see.

I was there Labor Day weekend 2015, i had a blast...saw maybe 100 trains come thru town.....One of the best place to railfan there is just north of town at the Folkston Turnout.....Its where the Jesup sub branches off NW to Waycross , Ga apart from the Nahunta Sub which goes north towards Savannah,......servicing 3 Amtrak tains a day in both directions for a total of 6....of which i've been on Silver Service 4 times and once on AutoTrain.......Folkston is a fun place to railfan and a fun and friendly town.....

I use to do the same thing when I was your age. I rode my bike down where the freight train would wait for Amtrak to pass. Engineer would let me walk and get on the locomotives while they were idling which was the coolest thing for me and way before all the cell phones and electronics too. Great job on the video and brings back memories for me.

XLNT show...... we have a train occasionally moving through up here in MidAtlantic that you'd only know it was out there by the sound I always like to hear.... the horn sounds lonesome on foggy nights :) Might also sound like that cuz I love bluegrass music.
and btw you leave a trail of indicators you're from decent stock.... courteous and cognizant. Your parents done well.
do you ever count cars and if so, how many on longest?
thanks for the genuine goods...... trains have fascinated me since early 60's on the real B&O, my uncle a comms engineer working in the caboose, he'd take me to youngstown back to baltimore. I loved the smell of fuel and hydraulic oils mixing with the air in the coachs..... dark blue trains with white lettering. Almost a hangover from art deco, the style of the locos.

That was awesome. Reminded me of when l was allowed to climb aboard a U.P. locomotive switching grain hoppers just outside of the railyard in my hometown in Ne. That was about 28 years ago but Ill never forget taking over the controls and actually driving the train and blowing the horn. At 7 years old l'm probably one of the youngest "engineers" to move a U.P. train. Lol

The only thing he did wrong was come down the ladder facing away from the unit, you always ascend and descend facing the steps. He had permission to e there for the rest. The RR Dick wouldn't say a word after the crew said he could look around, as long as he didn't touch anything, which wouldn't matter much anyway on a trailing unit.
