    Love seeing trains at work. When I was eight years old I was standing much too close to a passing train. The neighbor lady (in her seventies) came out of her house and screamed at me 'what are you doing? Get the hell away from there.' Now I know why!! But she made me cry. If Mrs Montfort was alive today I'd give her a hug....

    As a retired Up engineer watching these videos helps me to cope with my loss of income seeing my 41.7year friends and my love of trains I took down my massive ho scale up/bnsf/ns layout to give the space to a family member I miss my job,retirement $ is hard to live off of,keep putting out the fine work that yall do it's a great help to us that need it

    I worked out of this yard many years. Brings back good memory’s. ..lots of good men.

    Perfect footage ! And what a souvenir !! In 2012 we visited the Southwestern US from Belgium. Thanks to Google Earth I discovered that very spot on the bridge of Pepper Avenue !
    An impressive and busy beehive, this huge Colton Yard ! Much obliged for the memories.

    I lived uphill from a rail yard. I used to love the distant creaking sounds of the freight trains coupling and uncoupling at night especially when it was raining. Very relaxing sleep

      Fran I get that! I grew up on Air Force bases and the sound of jet noise to me is a lullaby. The louder the better.

    Great shots. Since UP has taken over the SP yard they certainly have cleaned everything up. COLTON use to be quite messy and dirty when SP had it. Looks great. My last visit here goes bac some forty years. I miss it.

    I have never seen so many trains. Cool as to how they switch tracks to hook up with certain lines of cars. I swear that one train was at least over a mile long.

      Most long-distance US freight trains are significantly over a mile. Anything up to about 2.5 miles is pretty common, and most are well over 1.5 miles.

      Marktheartest if you’re single and don’t mind basically being “owned” by UP, go for it. The pay and training(no pun intended) is great. If you have a family and/or a life I wouldn’t recommend it.

    Mesmerising & Fascinating at the same time. One very busy yard. Quality video.
    If it were not for the backdrop scenery (mountains) & highway traffic, you could almost imagine this being a model layout.

    Its nice seeing the SD40's doing solid work, even if its in the yard. My childhood memories are of watching those beasts on the open road in the feather river canyon.

    When I'm stuck at a crossing gate in my auto by a long train, I like to watch the art painted on the side of the railcars pass by. It makes my wait as a motorist less painful.

    Just found this video; very very nice, thank you for uploading, and for the work you did to it.
    I downloaded sound and video to play on the background when doing model railroading. Playing this hrough my Logitech Z906 5.1 (500W RMS) sound system my spouse thought that a whole railroad yard had moved down our cellar where mu setup sits :).

      I have plenty of action near where I am now but it's mostly and increasingly electric mutliple units.... sighs.
      I guess by 2035 only freight trains will use locomotives. And electric or hydrogen ones, that is. Passenger trains will be EMUs or hydrogen multiple units by then. No more Diesel.

    Great video. I mus say, UP is a lot more interesting in their use of locomotive brands then BNSF which is largely GE

      shnimmuc it’s because BN cares about their business and their employees and buys the best. UP just keeps using junk that should of been retired long ago. Look how much cleaner the BN units are. Cuz they actually wash em. UP’s COLTON wash rack was shut down years ago. UP recently voted worst company in the USA to work for. And I can attest for that.

      Is BNSF really "largely GE"? They have literally hundreds of SD70s, and most of their yard and local power is Geeps and SD40s.

    I worked the work train that laid the first carloads of ballast when the yard was being built in 1973. Us SP people called the yard West Clowntown or malfunction junction.

      i suspect that you referred to the sd40s, they were built with the same frame of longer 20 cylinder sd45, the sd40 have 16 cylinder ewngines so the carbody is shorter, and have these long porches at the front and in the end

      Wikipedia has quite a lot of information. These days, it's mostly GE dash-9s, GE Evolution Series ("Gevo") and EMD SD70 series locomotives.

    Excellent video! I wonder what the average daily dollar amount is on the goods that roll through just this yard. The sheer volume of goods moved is awesome.
