    Just changed my 1999 Marin to one buy, got a hope 32T on a deore hollowtech square taper crank and 11-28 8spd cassette on rear ,at 55 I only cruise down the canal path so I thought I'd go for it ,I love it ,she is so silent and rides like 👍 butter ,I put some insanely beautiful rockshox air forks up front and I love that bike 🚲 🤟💯🇬🇧 Hardtail 4 life 👍🙏💯🇬🇧❤🇺🇲🤠,I think I'm sticking with square taper because shimano BBs are just so smooth strong and fantastic 👏

    Great video, I loved that you let the "maintenance sounds" dictate the video instead of talking the whole time.
    Maybe you could have cleaned the bike while disassembling? That bottom bracket could use some attention.
    Quick tip: Don't use the rounded hex when undoing a bolt, use the other side it will also give you more leverage.

    I'm about to buy a Kona world bike Rasta 3 speed, nexus internal I think it's an 06 07, good commuter, it's in excellent shape, I think it's kinda rare, red letters flat black, I'll prolly put a shorter stem, brake pads, and maybe new chain, I'll do a tune up.

    First of, I want to say that I love your videos ! Very calming ans satisfying to watch. I have one question on this build, why did you use a derailleur hanger ? Thanks a lot !

    • @CowboyTomi
      @CowboyTomi  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thank you! Good question. I used a hanger because the cassette range was too big for the original derailleur. And the hanger allowed it to shift to the biggest ring without any interference.

    Hi Tomi - great channel. Just a question if you have started this bike for bikepacking? If so, do you think the bike to be better suited with a front suspension or rigid fork for bikepacking?
    90s Kona's appeared to feature the P2 rigid fork, before the front suspension fork was introduced. Cheers.

    • @CowboyTomi
      @CowboyTomi  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great question! I haven’t gone bikepacking with this one yet, but I know for a fact they’d be great for bikepacking. The fork has enough give to glide thru gravel trails and ride along paved roads with a good rolling speed. I can’t tell you if one is better than the other but I can tell you that you’ll have so much fun no matter which type of bike you choose.

  • @techos32

    Awesome build!! Quick question. Could you have used the old chain bolts or did you choose to buy the new green bolts?

    • @CowboyTomi
      @CowboyTomi  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! No, I couldn't have because they accommodated holding two chainrings instead of only one. So I had to get 1x bolts that were shorter to only hold one chainring.

    How confident are you in that wheelset being set up tubeless? I have a pair of Matrix Singletrack wheels I've been thinking of going tubeless on, but I'm not sure it'll work with the old rims.

    • @CowboyTomi
      @CowboyTomi  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I am always somewhat confident in using old rims for tubeless. It definitely helps if its a tubeless tire. However, these were a little difficult because they were not tubeless tires. Just make sure the taping is good and then give it a shot.

    Can you fit 650b/27.5 or 700c wheels on this frame? You think the rear wheel would have enough clearance?

    So when doing this ghetto tubeless, I know its not a tubeless rim but can you set it up with a rigid tyre? Or must the tyre at least be tubeless compatible?

    • @CowboyTomi
      @CowboyTomi  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good question, these non-tubeless tires happened to work on a tubeless set up, but it was tough. I'd say it would have a 50% chance of seating.

  • @ondrejmanych5688
    @ondrejmanych5688 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hi, these Trail boss tires are capable of tubeless? I have them on my Lava dome 2021 and was wondering if they can handle it. They are not labeled as tubeless tho...

    • @CowboyTomi
      @CowboyTomi  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Very good question, these are not tubeless ready, but I went for a tubeless set up anyway. The tires filled right up and has been sealed without any air leaks. It has kept its psi level for quite some time now since this build was done.

    What's the purpose of the extension on the rear derailleur

    • @CowboyTomi
      @CowboyTomi  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great question - Since I installed a bigger cassette (11-46t) on this bike, this Shimano Deore derailleur needed a boost to reach those extra teeth on the big rings.

    1x is a downgrade, plus it looks terrible on a classic 26 inch bike. Steel Kona's are awesome bikes otherwise.

    • @CowboyTomi
      @CowboyTomi  ปีที่แล้ว

      I wouldn't call it a downgrade, the gearing ratio still compensates for the original 3X8 it had and it's lighter. The purpose was to make things more simple and actually take it out mountain biking so I was never going to use those two extra rings in the first place. Old Kona's are amazing!
