I wish other people felt this way about older bikes like this...I always have and enjoy rebuilding them and showing them on my channel. So many people think if you don’t have the latest bike then it’s garbage. I’ve never had a bike newer than 2004 which was a Kona Stinky I built. Keep it up...ps. it’s easier to put the wheel on if you leave one of the brake arms off until after it mounted ;)

Beauty! I had a Cinder Cone (splatter paint and solid fork) until 2022. I brazed on rack mounts for panniers and rode it to bike tour North America, Europe and Japan over the decades. Last summer I rebuilt it and donated it to a bike charity (along with a Diamondback Viper BMX from my teenage years). I hope it’s next riders enjoy it as much as I did!

Thumbs up yet again. Half-way through I began to think that the bike was being pampered not just restored. Your workshop is a treatment room for bicycles. A place where they come for rest, recuperation and rehab. Just as people would go for a massage the bikes come in for a complete refit :)

How’s the geometry on these bikes?
I wanna build myself a nice 80s/90s mtb for cruising around, but since I’m having problems with my neck I can’t ride them in a stretched out riding position..
That’s the reason why I really lover modern enduro bikes, you sit very upright on them, almost like on a touring bicycle.
Are there old mtbs out there with such a upright seating position or are all of them stretched out that you have to ride them with a forward leaned back and up bent neck?
I know that’s a pretty weird and specific request, but maybe you could put me in the right direction..

Georgeous, as always. I’m also a sucker for Thomson stuff.
I just completed a budget build. I took a 2012 Trek hybrid and made it a gravel bike. I used some leftover stuff (wheels, mainly) and added a MicroSHIFT Advent drivetrain and an IXF crankset. The new stem was $16. Yup; $16. My handlebar wrapping actually looks OK. The bike is really not bad.
Mechanically, I’m an idiot. Videos like this inspired and taught me. And, eventually, that budget build will be given away. But I’ll wait until I find someone who can really use it.

I gave it to my riding buddy and he rebuilt it nice. 90s! Probably just my nostalgia but those were the best times for mountain bikes. I wish more folks would give these old bikes the respect they deserve. I will never get rid of it ever, it's been used, abused, crashed, bashed and dropped but still has most of its original parts. That is a thing of beauty ! You have done a wonderful job. I have an early 90's muddy fox monarch comp. I had it shot blast and powdercoated. I run it 1x9 alivio with deore hollowtech crankset. It's got a lot of colour going on ! I'd say the biggest drawback with these old frames is the lack of mud room at the chain stays. When we want to get a big tyre in there, instead of the relatively skinny tyres that were run back then.

I get a great deal of inspiration and enjoyment when I watch Mr OldShovel restore and bring back to life a bicycle 🚲, bicycles are great things that allow you to go to and from work, they allow you to explore places around you at your speed and also to keep yourself fit and healthy.
So please Mr oldShovel keep these wonderful videos coming, because my first build is now complete with a slight change to the final drive now being 18tooth instead of 16tooth, 16 was a bit hard on the legs 🦵 with this bike having DMR moto’s tyres on, however after completing this one ☝️ I have now decided to do the same to my hybrid but I will probably leave it with the final drive as 16tooth as I have 700c wheels on it and it will probably be quite quick when I can get to ride it, anyway thanks again see you next time for one of your bike builds.

Wow!!! I have a 1996 Kona Lava Dome. I definitely need to consider pulling it out and giving it new life!!!

This may be my favorite bike you've ever done! I, too, have an affinity for Konas. Great stuff!

Perfect. I have a '97 AA, '98 Cinder Cone, and "03 Kula Deluxe all with Marzocci forks. Your work outdid the originals 👍🏻

Great video. I came across your videos the first week of lockdown. They definitely helped with calming the nerves of the beginning of this whole thing. Great build, great channel!

this bike is amazing, after building a few quite expensive trials and mountain bikes for myself this year, your channel inspired me to do a retro rebuild, so got my hands on a 2004 trek alpha 4500, which over the next few weeks will have new wheels built, a 1x9 or 10 drivechain, some decent tyres and a rigid fork, ideal for commuting but will also take some singletrack, and of course rim brakes to keep the retro look, might even get some hs33 for it in the future. awesome video as usual :)

Oh boy, I have a 92 Cinder cone that could sure use a rebuild. This is inspiring. I think I might need a new rear wheel to go Shimano as it came with the Suntour group that year.

This is not a KONA..this is a masterpiece !!! Shame on you Kona because you don't paint bikes like old shovel..Man..you are an artist..

It’s strange how you like some builds more than others, this was one of those. Like you say it may be the colour and the time of year, Merry Christmas to you and your family.

fantastic job, your paint job on the frame looks gorgeous, I understand why you've kept the Rear derailleur and square tapered BB stock, but if you go 1X, you might as well go all the way, after all! those are consumable parts...

This one is the one that I like best. Mostly because it's the same bike I used to have, only mine was with the rigid project 2 fork. I had other suspension (full & hardtail) bikes, but none had the magic ride of the Kona. The red paint really pops! Thanks 👍

This is a great build with a some nice modern touches. Reminds me of the 94' rockhopper that I ride as my commuter bike. I really like the simple standards that are easily worked on at home, rather than needing specialist tools in the bike shop.

Really nice build. I have a 91 Cindercone I will be renovating this winter, will be keeping mine as near stock as possible though, it has the P2 forks. Also have a mid 90s CroMo Fire Mountain with P2s and a MuniMula from the same era.
