  • Portal RTX is our first look at RTX Remix, which has the potential to revolutionise older PC games, transforming them into RT showcases. This particular release dramatically modernises the Valve classic with all-new assets and a fully path-traced pipeline, transforming the look of the game. But what is path-tracing compared to the hybrid RT approach seen in most titles? And how much GPU RT power do you need for a good experience.

    Portal RTX is unbelievably impressive, but the side-by-side shots really hammer home to me how strong Portal's art direction already was. the original artists did such a great job, it holds up really well to my eye at least

      At the time, I remember being SO impressed with the whole Orange Box. I got it for the 360, and I was so impressed that once I got what passed for a "gaming computer" in 2008, I bought it again for PC. It was such an amazing value with amazing games. They all still hold up, but I'd love to see more half-life games get ray tracing...I'd also like a GPU that's actually capable of running it well. I have an RX 6950 XT, and while it's very impressive for rasterization and can hold it's own with a 3090/3090ti without RTX, sometimes even beating both in a good amount of games, it's often beat by a 3070ti in actual ray tracing. I can't justify purchasing a $1000+ GPU just for RTX at this point.

      It's not really an apples to apples comparison when the RTX is basically a remaster with higher resolution textures and models. If it was down to RTX alone, the difference would be barely noticeable, as it always is with ray tracing.

      @@EliteMonkeyzz I’ve checked to see if this is possible, and I’ve got some good news and some bad news.
      The bad news is that Return to Castle Wolfenstein uses OpenGL 1.1 or Glide 2 as its graphics API, whereas RTX Remix is only compatible with DirectX8 & 9 games.
      The good news is that in a Q&A hosted on Nexus Mods, one of the developers of RTX Remix expressed interest of adding OpenGL compatibility in the future, though their current focus is on DirectX. Given enough time, Return to Castle Wolfenstein (as well as games made on the GoldSrc engine) will be compatible.

    Surprised this isn't covered in the video but I managed to get it running much better on older cards by going into the developer settings and turning off both Opacity Micromap and Shader Execution Reordering since it reduces performance on hardware that don't support it.
    There are also a bunch of settings that are unnecessarily high like reflection bounce and sample counts which are set to 10 and 7 by default, lowering all of them down improved performance by around 2x without compromising too much on the visual quality. I can't remember the rest so I'll update this comment when I get back home.
    *Edit:* Here are the rest of the settings:
    *DLSS:* Performance
    *Path Tracing:*
    *- Resolver:* Max Secondary Interactions: 1
    *- PSR* Max Reflection PSR Bounce: 1
    Max Transmission PSR Bounce: 3
    *- Integrator:* Unordered Resolve in Indirect Rays: Disable
    Min Path Bounces: 0
    Max Path Bounces: 2 (or any value depending on your setup)
    *- Opacity Micromap:* Disable
    *Lighting:* RIS Light Sample Count: 2 (or above depending on your hardware)
    *- RTXDI:* Spatial Sample Count: 1
    Ray Traced Bias Correction: Disable
    *- ReSTIR GI:* ReSTIR GI Spatial Bias Correction: None
    *Volumetrics:*
    *- Per-Portal Volumes:* Disable
    *- Initial RIS Sample Count:* 2
    *Denoising:*
    *- Separate Primary Direct/Indirect Denoiser:* Disable
    *- Filter Fireflies in Disocclusion:* Enable
    *- Enhance BSDF Detail Under DLSS:* Disable
    *Post-processing:*
    * -Bloom:* Disable (Personal preference but does cost some performance)
    Note: Lighting and Denoising settings are all related, you may either apply these settings or set them to default as not applying all will cause visual artifacts.
    I used DLSS performance with these settings and managed to increase from 35 to 65 FPS at 1080p. This was tested on a 2070 Super so your mileage may vary on other hardware.
    You can gain even more FPS by turning certain RTX features completely off like RTXDI and Reflections PSR (Ray Traced Reflections) though it will alter the visuals significantly.

      I was also able to achieve quite a lot better performance with RDNA2 by tweaking settings. There are also reports by some people on Twitter going through the game with some debugging software confirming that the shaders are pretty convoluted. They are not optimized at all for AMD hardware having way too high register pressure.
      The most ridiculous fact is that while you would think RDNA gpus suffer from worse ray tracing performance in this remix game. The ray tracing isn't even the bottle neck but the fact that the other shaders are implemented that awful, they can't properly be parallelized. That's why you actually get better performance on Linux with RADV instead of amdgpu-pro or amdvlk while RADV provides worse ray tracing performance in all other applications. I was really surprised by this.

    It's absolutely nuts how this runs in real-time, much less at 60 fps. @alfo2804 ปีที่แล้ว

      No.
      Stencil shadows are almost the entire visual identity of Doom 3. If raytracing was implemented in a purely realistic way - as it has been done here - it would just make that game look mediocre.
      Not to mention the fact that bounce lighting would almost certainly make the game a lot brighter, which would arguably mess with the aesthetic even more.

    • @elforeign

      @@alfo2804 I think there's enough variance in the game where it would mostly be a great benefit. Especially if the roughness of textures is taken into consideration, there's a lot of levels with low lighting rough textures/rocky terrain where it would look great. Also, the amounts of particle effects in the game could really utilize actual light characteristics being modeled.
      There's certainly a good argument to be made that some things may suffer, and we see some of those issues mentioned just in this video, such as texture choices. It would still be great to see Doom 3 with RTX effects.

    This is literally the same underlying tech that’s used in Hollywood movies - literally. No cheats this time, no “but at real time quality settings”, just clever hardware and software engineering. Four times bounce GI is accepted in the industry as a level where after that there are several diminishing returns. Upsamplers and denoisers are already being used in CG production as well. So this is almost as Hollywood as real time graphics can get.

At 1080p resolution, I got 30-45FPS with performance DLSS (540p rendering), and a smooth 65+ FPS with max performance DLSS (360p rendering).
    I've always been amazed at DLSS, but I've never seen it work so well in any other game - 360p is rubbish (basically old VHS tape quality), but I had trouble telling the difference between 360p up-scaling and 1080p native! I figure it's because technical limitations of the day meant Portal looks "samey" across the game - there's not many textures or other visuals for DLSS to learn. Still, it's amazingly impressive...

    This may sound odd, but i'd really love to see you guys run Benchmarks of games running on ultra with RTX, WITHOUT DLSS, at lower resolutions/framreates, like 1080p/60fps: I can't speak for other people, but I'm personally quite happy still at 1080p and 60fps in most titles, but like getting the maximum visual fidelity out of that resolution and performance, and as I understand it, and as as Portal RTX seemingly demonstrates, RTX/Ultra settings without DLSS can prove pretty challenging even at 1080/60, and even if you wanted to use DLSS, my understanding is that it doesn't function well going from a sub 1080p resolution up to 1080p

    • @Hidacal
      @Hidacal ปีที่แล้ว

      Those benchamarks would be almost completely useless. If you're happy on 1080p, presumably your hardware is low to mid end at most. Which is ok, but you're missing the point of just how massively demanding full RTX is. Turning it off i get ~40 fps on a 4080 which is many steps above a 1080p card. That's on 1440p, but still.
      I have no idea for what stupid reason you wouldnt enable DLSS on a card that supports it, but if you have one that doesnt, this full RTX stuff is just completely beyond your hardware. The AMD showcase in this video shows that pretty clearly.

    • @MajoraZ
      @MajoraZ ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@Hidacal I thought I explained the use case pretty well? I'm satisfied by 1080p/60FPS, but I want maximum visual fidelity within whatever resolution I have. Yes, I COULD use a higher resolution display, but even high end hardware can struggle to run certain games at 60fps with RTX at ultra at 4k, even with DLSS, let alone without DLSS. So i'd rather not bother sending the GPU power rendering at a higher resolution, and would rather put it towards rendering a 1080p image with zero compromises and with RTX and max settings.

    The 3080 should be closer to 3x as fast as the 6800 XT I think. I finally found someone who tested pathtracing on a 7900 XTX and he said it's about twice as fast as his prior 6950 XT in Minecraft RTX and Quake 2 RTX. My 3080 is still noticeably faster in Quake 2 RTX when matching his settings.
    In any case regarding the broken performance, I saw someone on Twitter who ran an AMD graphics debugging tool on the game and showed that it seems to be using an extremely high number of vector math operations and maxing out the vector registers on the GPU. A single shader that used no RT operations was taking nearly 100ms to execute per frame. He didn't want to investigate further to figure out why that's the case though.

      @@Stef3m I couldn't speculate on how much AMD might be able to improve performance with drivers. My suspicion is that it's either the GI or denoising algorithm that's using so much vector math, since it was designed for the vector processing capabilities of nVidia's tensor cores which AMD has no equivalent of in their gaming GPUs currently. I expect Intel's GPUs will hold up much better, once Intel/Lightspeed fixes it failing to launch, since those do have similar hardware capabilities.

    • @nimbulan2020
      @nimbulan2020 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@blitzwing1 Well I just found another video this same guy posted of the game on his old 6950 XT and it looks to be running only about 25% slower than his 7900 XTX test so 2x as fast definitely doesn't sound right. He's hitting 90 fps at ~75% resolution scale (dynamic res framerate target) at 1440p with medium-ish settings on the 6950 XT, and 120 fps with the 7900 XT. My 3080 hits 120 fps with those same settings at about 83% resolution scale. All just quick tests of the first couple rooms in the game.
      Regarding Portal, you're getting 14 fps at 1440p native? Because people can't even manage that on Windows at far lower resolutions. I saw a debugging report on Twitter indicating a bottleneck with vector math operations, but we'll have to wait and see. My 3080 gets 20 fps at 1440p native ultra for what it's worth, on the menu.

    • @nimbulan2020
      @nimbulan2020 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@blitzwing1 Yeah the vector math bottleneck seems to result in the GPU being badly underutilized. I'm not sure if that's something that can be fixed with drivers, an optimization issue with RTX Remix's shaders, or if this sort of pathtracing system really does require something like nVidia's tensor cores to process in a reasonable amount of time. In every elevator, as well, the signage about the door was noisy. Even in portal with the most simple room visuals you can imagine, the fps is close to zero and still limited to 4 bounces. And we dont talk about 4k. If the gpus can double the cores every 2 years we still need around 10 years to get what we need for realtime path tracing on 4k. Dlss is not "real" its cheated imho it dont really count. Running that stuff on cyberpunk? Impossible.

  • @opinali
    @opinali ปีที่แล้ว +1

    It's interesting that in the scene at 1:00, DLSS is causing very noticeable artifacts due to the disocclusion of the fast-moving piston things; just look at the oval light below the portal at the center. I noticed that immediately in my first view of the video without even thinking about artifacts.

    • @Keldor314
      @Keldor314 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That's not the fault of DLSS, it's the fault of the sort of temporal reprojection they have to do to make path tracing fast enough for real time, even on super high end hardware.
      Basically, in order to get enough samples for lighting to not be a noisy mess, it's accumulating light hitting over multiple frames, and taking an average. What this means is that things like moving shadows get blurred, lighting doesn't instantly dim if you turn off the source, and you get noise in recently disoccluded areas simply because they don't have any samples from previous frames to blend in.
      Future hardware will give better results since it will be faster, meaning they won't have to average in as many frames. There's also room for smarter algorithms. For instance, the disocclusion areas are fairly small compared to the entire frame. If we could somehow identify them in real time, and then throw a bunch of extra samples their way, we could greatly improve the quality and shorten the averaging window in the 5% of the image where it matters for a relatively modest cost.

    • @opinali
      @opinali ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Keldor314 That makes a lot of sense, thanks! It didn't occur to me that accumulated light would cause that specific artifact. It's actually not much different from persistence of vision in the human visual system, if you turn off a bright light I actually keep "seeing" some light for a few milliseconds :)

    • @Ozzianman

      @@Ozzianman The mods RTX Remix outputs can work on non nvidia gpus, you just need an rtx card to use remix. But since they used DXVK to translate d3d8/9 calls to vulkan, if the other gpu makers or even dedicated modders wish, they can create a similar tool to it, would be years of work though. I wonder how they added USD capture and replacement. But what we really need is support for open gl (fixed function and pixel shader) and pixel shader DirectX. Imagine the possibilties.
