The government can't do much about it as most of these scams syndicate operates outside Singapore. All the government could do is keep educating the citizens.

I will not answer any phone number I don't know or from overseas. Any impt notifications from banks & government agencies will be sent out in writing.

I think it happens in countries that are perceived to be rich. In Australia, scams have been rife for years. Phone scams not so prevalent now but email and text message ones are. I constantly get phishing emails, everyday. Drives me a bit nuts personally but also makes me angry to think people like your nan are vulnerable to it. But, while ever we live in a world where the is such disparity with what people have, there will always be crooks. That's what they are 🤷‍♀️

I guess so… I hope people are more aware and are able to prevent some very tricky situations.

@@jontytan Interestingly, they have been reporting today that in the year up to March, Australians have been scammed out of $3.1 billion! 🥺

Oh my gosh - that’s a LOT of money!!! Do you think these scammers always know that they are scamming people?? Or are there big bosses scamming employees?

@@jontytan I think they are often aware because if you challenge them, they quickly hang up. However, for some I'm sure they are under pressure ... I think it depends on the scam. I think the people conducting the "love" scams absolutely know what they are doing.

Yes.. I’ve heard some really sad love scams recently. So sad. People got scammed out of a lot!

I am In the U.K. and phon scams are certainly on the increase here. My elderly Mum had a call like your Gran, she gave no info but rang me immediately and made me ring her banks just to make sure all is in order. Everything was ok but it is so easy to be conned. I had a call myself last week supposedly from BT. It was very plausible and the girl spoke excellent English. This type of scan are much on the increase due to our monthly fees being increased next month, We all have to be so careful. It’s important that we are there fore our elderly relatives but must also take care of ourselves too. Horrible times!

Thank you for interacting! Such a shame that the desperation is bringing people to this… I don’t think I ever really heard of phone scams in the UK but there are lots here for sure.

It sounds like your grandma had the smarts not to be drawn in, but many people wouldn't be so smart. It is really sad that people will do that to older people. Scams happen all over the world, sadly.

Yes, and actually I wonder whether other nations have picked on Singapore because of its trusting nature… I have received loads of scam calls from non-Singaporean numbers… nice to hear from you buddy!

I usually ignored those call that started with +65 coz they usually are scam calls, but i heard now even those without +65 can be scam as well 😅
