In 2023 I sold my 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee Sport, 6 cyl. 2 wd, with 236,000 miles on it for $2,500. Scotty is exactly right about depreciation. As I recall I bought that car new for $24,500 so, it had lost a whopping 90% of its value when I sold it.
Used to like Carmax many years ago. Their cars were cheaper than many dealers and you knew exactly what the cost was going to be. They no longer have any competitive advantage.
Carmax gives you a certain number of days from the moment of sale for them to fix anything wrong with the car. AFter you buy it, take it to a mechanic for a full diagnosis, and then bring it back to carmax. They will fix everything for free, no questions asked.
That fact about cars going for more than they were worth was true for all cars during the pandemic, not just electric cars. Carmax also has 0 Cybertucks for sale nationwide right now.
As a Californian, the reason why ev sales are falling because the only people that buy them are wealthy high earners, working class people like me get gasoline cars for multiple purposes like taking kids to school, going to work, grocery shopping, doing laundry, for traveling trips to the desert, snow and beach. Plus we have a lot of good mechanics to keep fixing old cars.
We made the decision to keep our 08 Versa....$1600 in welding, $200 for a windshield, and probably another $1000 to get the brakes done for the safety sticker. We know the car, so why would we buy another used car, or waste money buying new. See you in 5 years to see how it turns out. :)
In Sac CA I bought a used 2016 Prius in Jan 2020 before the pandemic shut everything down. It had 94k on the clock, but was a single owner, meticulously maintained. I bought it from the dealership that originally sold it for $17k. Gas was about $3 per gallon then in CA. During the pandemic gas prices went down and the value of my Prius went down. But post-pandemic gas prices skyrocketed and remain high in CA, which has boosted the value of cars like the Prius. I put about 20k miles on the Prius and sold it last month for $15.5k to a private buyer, only $1.5k less than I paid for it 4 years and 20k miles ago.

I have 4 cars. And only financing 1. A 2021 Jeep Wrangler 4Xe. I personally think Plug in hybrid tech is the way to go. My wife and I almost pulled the trigger on a Tesla. But thank God we didn't. Plug in hybrid. Best of both worlds.
Carmax prices is still high,I almost bought Toyota Camry 2018 with 30k miles amounting to $23,800 this month while a new Toyota Camry 2024 AWD with less than 1000 miles $31,700
I would. Sell it for a deep discount to unload it fast. Then look for a half ways decent '98 and up Crown Vic, Marquis, or Linc TC. Hard to beat for a simple, durable, safe car that is almost certain to pass 300K miles w very little trouble. Unlike Camry and older Lexus, can be found fairly cheap due to many thinking they are not cool enough, or only 'old peoples cars' lol. Police & taxi use proved they're safe & dependable. I'd even go as far back as the first gen of downsized ones from 1979-87 but their old age means not many nice ones around. I still see a few good running early and mid 90's examples, still looking good after 30 + years. Future special interest cars!
PGE raise price in CA to 72 cents per KW on peak hours, that's the same price as gas to charge that stupid thing and as soon as the warranty is gone on them EV their car price cut in half
Drove a rented Model Y from CA to TX and back. Wonderful, smooth experience. But since gas is so much cheaper outside CA and Supercharger prices (30-40cents) was same as home electric, I calculated my cost per mile savings at 1-1/2 cpm MORE than if I had taken my V6 Mercedes (which I have done many times.). The Model Y made it a great trip but I think the fuel cost savings of the past is over. If electric mandates ever become reality, “they” will have you by the groin!
Perhaps more details would help your comment make sense. Was the EV an 80 mile compliance car and you live outside a city? In CA, even the lowly Leaf was suitable and even enjoyed by many EV early adaptors.
If you sell a car yourself you will have to sell it for less money than what a dealer is asking BUT you will still get more money then trading it in or selling to CarMax.
I hate to say it, but my family had great experiences with Carmax. My brother got his Ford F150 from them back in 2013 and still drives it. My sister-in-law got her Nissan Pathfinder from them in 2015 and still drives it. I had a seven-year-old Acadia from them that ran great. Butttt My new Toyota four runner runs better.

I wouldn't do it because there's an increasing number of cases buying cars from one of these places that turn out to be stolen, police confiscate the property, and that the money is a civil matter.
Scotty, CarMax has some good finds. It's the buyer's responsibility to choose. Since CarMax has so many different cars, you can find a nice car at a fair price if you do your homework. I bought a car for 18k that originally sold for 67k. The car has 37 thousand miles. I got a warranty for 2 thousand and the warranty is for 60 months or up to 75,000 miles. I have used CarMax warranties several times with no problems. In addition, CarMax gives you 30 days to change your mind and bring the car back. I have done it. If you don't believe me, I will bring my latest car on your channel and you can scan it. The car is damn near perfect. I have no affiliation with CarMax. I agree with you about those ridiculous electric cars. Fossil fuels are obviously better than batteries in every sense.
I work in Santa Barbara California and what are they building next to my work I gas station called fuel Depot why are they building a gas station? If they’re gonna get rid of all the gas stations these people lie all the time don’t believe them.
I remember those small Toyota's. We used to laugh at them on the way to school. The shift level was sticking straight out from the center of the dashboard.
Funny about the speed cameras. There was one here in Killeen, TX for years. It caused more accidents because people would literally slam their brakes. Sooooo freaking true 😂 My friend got a ticket when it turned yellow while he was still in the intersection! It was definitely a bad thing lol
Trying to move too quickly to fully electric - Hybrids are the better option, and probably will be for quite some time longer during this transition to full-electric.
What these automobile manufacturers do not seem to understand is half of our planet is still developing and the life's blood of that development is gasoline! I mean some farmers in the developing part of the world still us animals to plow their fields! The car makers are essentially cutting the choices for these people down to zero.

People especially TH-camrs keep knocking on CarMax. I always had good encounter with them. Sold my 2020 E convertible and 10 days later, it listed on CarMax for 1000$ more than they paid me; and looking to buy a Miata and CarMax has it right on the average priced by KBB. TH-camrs like to knock on them by showing used Toyota SUVs selling near new car price. However what they don't say is dealers are selling them at same or higher price. Market dictates what the price is.
Up here in the Chicagoland area there's carmax's all over the place I work for electrician supply company and I've been delivering to him they're putting up new ones
All electric cars don't sound feasible. Hybrids do though. The energy is reclaimed by the batteries when you brake. And you use smaller gas engines and use the electric to give you a boost when you need it.
I would think that one thing about them in Hawaii is the climate is easier on the battery. Wouldn't suffer from the drop in life from cold weather sapping it's charge. Maybe?
I’m a firm believer that in ten years most vehicles built will be a hybrid. They are going to use electric motors to make smaller vehicles more economical and to make larger vehicles more powerful. The new Tundra and Ford Powerboost trucks are prime examples. However Toyota has the hybrid system figured out and Ford does not.
Great videos! If cars had front and rear cameras... they would catch all the A holes on the road and be sent to insurance for rates to go up! Million dollar idea? 💡 Then we wouldn't need traffic cameras. 🤷
Elon's cyber truck looks like some pasted together cardboard project from a first-grade public school class. Uhhh, the fresh aromas of glue, paste and money up in smoke!
Some towns and cities in New York have been proactive and pulled the speed cameras that they had used. They found that they just were not worth it. The cameras used on the New York State Thruway on the other hand are for charging the tolls and making certain that people get the bill if either they do not have an E-ZPass at all or have it mounted incorrectly in their cars. When the E-ZPass was only for the minority of drivers though we were required to slow to 10 miles per hour when passing through the dedicated lane. I got a warning letter from Albany for going 20 when I had actually come to a complete stop in the regular lane due the dedicated lane being out of order. Now that the booths are gone the recommendation is to slow to 40 in the interchange areas, but no one actually does except for conservative drivers like myself.
I understand that the sale of new ICE vehicles will be illegal in California in the future like 2035... It's a big market that will be replacing ICE vehicles with some alternative say electric, hydrogen, etc...
“So, do red-light cameras reduce violations, and more importantly, crashes? The simple answer is yes. IIHS studies found that the introduction of red-light cameras reduced violations by about 40 percent. The institute also found that when comparing large cities with the cameras to those without, the cameras reduced red-light-running crash fatalities by 21 percent”
the combustion engine vs electric cars conundrum is reminiscent of the dawn of quartz watches in the mechanical watch era. disposable and unrepairable for similar reasons.
True, but in the end, all a watch has to do is keep time. I’ve worn Casio Calculator watches for 45 years. Still a fraction of dollars spent compared to a quality mechanical watch.
Speed cameras should be illegal because speed limits are just advisory. In the US, you have to have a cop make the determination that your driving is a risk to other motorists. That's why they have to show up in court to testify. Speed limits are not absolutes.

That’s 22 years mate
You are awesome. You feel the pulse exactly of what's going on in the car world. Just subscribed!
EVERYONE, Scotty is still with us.
Here's another problem, what are they going to do about all of the batteries that came along with those unwanted EVs??
That has everything to do with the dollar having less buying power than it did a few years ago and nothing to do with gas prices.
@@eggsinsideme In CA it has to do with gasoline prices. We pay $1 per gallon more here on average and 53-mpg Priuses are worth more.
@@andrewbird57 I’ve lived in California and all across the country. Cars are cheaper in California. More inventory and competition than most elsewhere.
Kudos to whomever does your video production. Your spicy commentary & the memes, graphics, etc. are a legendary combo, sir.
You work for 40yrs to have $1M in your retirement, meanwhile some people are putting just $10K in a meme coin from just few months ago and now they are multimillionaires.❤️
I agree but finding a professional for guidance ain't as easy as it sounds. cause I've been searching for one
Well I must say people are scared because there are so many unprofessional brokers out there.
YES! that's exactly her name (Marie Wood ) | watched her interview on CNN News and so many people recommended highly about her
she is an expert and I'm just starting with her from Ontario Canada🇨🇦.
Any specific guide. I'm from Georgia how do I go about this? I think I'm interested how can I get in touch

I have a 96 Cutlass Ciera and 92 Gmc Suburban.
Rust free!
These two vehicles, will last me the rest of my life. 😁
are you 90? lol
@@TheUnofficialMaker lol! Your funny! No,I am 37. 😁 those two vehicles of mine, have outlasted most of these newer cars and yours!👍
Cutless Ciera, LOL I bet you are single?
Those cars came from Florida after the flood,,,,, these cars are flooded cars ,,, because it's legal to sale the car 🚗 in another state legally...
The former circus city by my home in Roseville, Ca was replaced by Fry’s Electronics, then Echo Park which is equivalent to Carmax, no negotiation no haggle!
Those Tesla owners were dumb enough to buy those trucks in the first place.
scotty killer always just keeping it real. love you man. just honest, no nonsense information being delivered. thank you killer!
I wouldn't take an EV for free.
Take it and sell it to CarMax.
We knew this would happen!
…cost per mile expense, not savings lol
I was happy to get rid of my EV. I hated the Range Anxiety.
Perhaps more details would help your comment make sense. Was the EV an 80 mile compliance car and you live outside a city? In CA, even the lowly Leaf was suitable and even enjoyed by many EV early adaptors.
I just bought a 21 Scatpack Challenger from CarMax for 39 with only 25k miles! It’s manual too
I watch Scotty every day. So knowledgeable so entertaining. Great presentations. AND no, I did not know the circuit city back story. Wow.
If you sell a car yourself you will have to sell it for less money than what a dealer is asking BUT you will still get more money then trading it in or selling to CarMax.
good luck selling a 60k car
@@TheUnofficialMaker I don't hang out in the 60k market but swim in the 10-35k waters.
Carmax gives you a certain number of days from the moment of sale for them to fix anything wrong with the car. AFter you buy it, take it to a mechanic for a full diagnosis, and then bring it back to carmax. They will fix everything for free, no questions asked.
You know Scotty is attracting young viewers when he has to explain the canary in the coal mine analogy!
A speed camera intersection, Green means GO, Yellow means STOP, Red means STOP.
Well Said! Human nature is to want the new shiny thing and in America you can be rich and dumb as rocks at the same time!! Lol
What these automobile manufacturers do not seem to understand is half of our planet is still developing and the life's blood of that development is gasoline! I mean some farmers in the developing part of the world still us animals to plow their fields! The car makers are essentially cutting the choices for these people down to zero.
Yeah everyone is trying to '1-up' each other and going straight to EV and skipping Hybrids.
CarMax seems to be stuck in a 22k to 35k range regardless the yr make or model
EV's are just glorified Golf Carts.
Scotty do a video on the new cheap toyota truck
That would be awesome! 💯 He would have to go off of internet information though because he wouldn’t be able to get access to one in the United States, at least not yet.🤷🏼♂️
I seen a RIP on Facebook and thought he passed away. Jeez
Same here 🧐 the internet is gross.
RIP Tesla
@@JimmyLeeJr oh I see
People especially TH-camrs keep knocking on CarMax.
Scotty tells you always the truth not the politicians…
Do a story on NIO and their battery swapping technology.
Up here in the Chicagoland area there's carmax's all over the place I work for electrician supply company and I've been delivering to him they're putting up new ones
Australia is the WORST for all these revenue cameras. Hidden, the lot.
Every state here is like a junkie on the $$$.
Tucker 48 keeps going up in value - one sold for $2.9 million in 2013!
Just saw a thing from your Facebook said RIP.
???!
I didn't get it, neither 😕
I saw that too and its a prank 😅
Speed cameras are more about revenue than safety.
dealer in Upland CA selling 2021 model y with 10k miles, came off lease. Priced 21K below new......
scotty, you said you couldn't believe they were still in business the other day. that made my ears prick up. this is a klaxxon call!
All electric cars don't sound feasible. Hybrids do though. The energy is reclaimed by the batteries when you brake. And you use smaller gas engines and use the electric to give you a boost when you need it.
When in Hawaii last year…Couldn’t Believe the number of Teslas For Sale At car Lots All over there…
Finding parts will cost more to get them to Hawaii
I would think that one thing about them in Hawaii is the climate
is easier on the battery. Wouldn't suffer from the drop in life from cold weather sapping it's charge. Maybe?
They are trade in for the new model.
"The canary is starting to pass out." 😆😆
I’m a firm believer that in ten years most vehicles built will be a hybrid. They are going to use electric motors to make smaller vehicles more economical and to make larger vehicles more powerful. The new Tundra and Ford Powerboost trucks are prime examples. However Toyota has the hybrid system figured out and Ford does not.
They also won’t outlaw camera tickets in Illinois for the same reason
Animation Domination !
Love it 👍
😂. Love that last comment Scotty. The canary is starting to pass out- 😂😂
Great videos! If cars had front and rear cameras... they would catch all the A holes on the road and be sent to insurance for rates to go up! Million dollar idea? 💡 Then we wouldn't need traffic cameras. 🤷
That cyber truck reminds me of the VW Thing. Buyers thought they'd be cool, but... not.
Scotty still posting consistently keep it up
Man I saw a Facebook post. I thought this man was dead 😂was coming to give my condolences
My boyfriend said the same thing and I started crying 😩😩 until I came to fact check lmao
I just looked on their website in my area and I don't see them being anywhere close to 1/2 price. If anything, they are still badly overpriced.
I really got a charge out of this video!
Not going to happen
Thank you Scotty! I love when you rip on EV’s! 😂😂😂
That which grows slowly, endures...JG Holland
I never thought I’d hear Iowa out of Scotty’s mouth 😆
More accidents and the computer is set with less time than normal lights so it's not fair. If time delay was set the same as normally would be ok.
My granddaughter has racked up 5 camera tickets all at 47 mph😢in Dayton Ohio
Love the picture with the dog driving Scotty.
And carmax will turn around and try to sell it for more than sticker. They are crooked!
A Wealth of information again. Thanks Scotty
Speed cameras are all about the money and have nothing to do with safety.
Speed cameras should be illegal because speed limits are just advisory. In the US, you have to have a cop make the determination that your driving is a risk to other motorists. That's why they have to show up in court to testify. Speed limits are not absolutes.
You are alive!🎉😂
Why would folks buy a new car and 2 months later trade it in? People have to much money.
There is nothing electrifying about electric cars
Oil drilling in Africa? That continent makes the Middle East seem stable.😢. The extravagant features and high prices of cars brings to mind the car industry in the Roaring 20s...right before the big stock market crash and massive job loss.
