lol... i remember teaching this to a bunch of carvers about 10 years ago... us sculptors used it for many years before that, because a lot of the wood we cut was full of rott and bark runs. the technique goes back, way back, but was popularized by 1970's sculptor david nash, but before then, george nakashima has many pieces that were wood filled. i alway make my shims on a table saw, its faster, and safer. gets a cleaner shim. i never wet mine, never saw the need. the issue with wetting is you are expanding the wood, and it will shrink when it dries, leaving cracks on iether side of your splint. i put in dry, then oil after recarve, so the wood swells, amd stays swelled. but other than that, good vid man!

I have repaired my wood statues with cracks by using wood dust from a saw mill. First fetch the wood dust from a saw mill and grind it into a fine powder in your kitchen mixer grinder. Then fill the cracks in the wood with that fine dust and pack it well with a small spatula. Then wipe out the dust from surrounding with a dry cloth. Then pour polyurethane glue like Fevikwik by means of a nozzle fitted tube so that it does not spill over surrounding area and is limited to only the crack. Allow it to dry. The job is done. You can then use a boot polish dissolved in petrol to touch the area with relevant Color if there is any Color mismatch.

I have a smaller bear and was wondering if I could just use sawdust and wood glue to make a paste and fill. I was thinking of cutting some of the same wood off the bottoms of the piece and make a bunch of sawdust and glue. What's your thoughts?

Hi Kris, In your description you can make your url live by adding the www. to the front of your website CustomWoodCarvings.com so when people hoover over it turns blue and becomes live and by clicking it will take them right to your website. Just an idea. Thanks again for the great video on repairing the cracks. I like the way you have the materials listed at the end of your video.
