Ukraine’s Tavors [Fort-221 / Fort-224]

- In 2008 Ukrainian state enterprise RPC Fort entered into a partnership with Israel's IWI to offer Tavor rifles - the Fort-221 and Fort-224 have since been seen during the fighting.
Usual caveat that I'm terrible at pronouncing things applies!

Ukraine's National Guard is part of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, which is why they have most of the IWI variants sold by Fort. Fort is owned by the Ministry of Internal Affairs and produces handcuffs, riot control rifles, police side arms, etc.

So in the Ukrainian supply chain there is now 7.62x25 Tok, 9mm Makarov, 9mm NATO, 5.56, 5.45, 7.62x39, 7.62x51, 7.62x54r, .338 Lapua, .50BMG and 12.7mm Russian as well. Deployment and reinforcement must be shaped by who drew what weapons in the geographic small arms lottery. Its a storemans nightmare.
oh, logistics a definitely a mess for us. And gonna be even more difficult as we get more weapons from different countries... Still, better this than no weapons at all :)
@@TheFivetimesdead It will get easier as more and more NATO small arms are being supplied. Even the Polish PKs are 7.62x51 these days.
Transition to NATO calibers is painful, but necessary, since we don't produce USSR calibers and will run out of them eventually.
its typical when your country is short on weaponry hopefully ukraine will become a nato member and they can go to standardized caliber with nato.
Most likely 95% of calibres are 7.62×39mm, 5.45×39mm and 7.62×54R with the rest being niche. If Ukraine had one million AK-74-type rifles alone outnumber all other rifles combined except perhaps thed AKM, which again, just will use the common 7.62×39mm.
The hand guards on the Ak seen at 5:15 is made by a Ukrainian company called Crook. I own an Ak in all crook furniture it is top notch.
A ukranian friend of mine told me that the Fort 224 9mm SMGs and semi auto carbines are both weapons used by Police forces

If you own a Tavor, you can buy a conversion kit to 9mm

Part of the reason that I purchased a Tavor SAR-21 in 2013 was that IWI-US would make a 5.45x39 conversion kit for it (bought cheap and stacked deep) I suspect IWI-US had prior notice of the 7n6 ban because they quietly dropped that option blaming lack of suitable magazines, which was absurd as I had been running a 5.45 AR for years with no problems with the ASC magazines.
How could you purchase a SAR-21? There's a SAR (semi Auto) and a TAR-21 (select fire). A SAR-21 doesn't exist, besides the fact that a select fire Tavor would have to be a dealer sample. I own a SAR in 5.56 and the TG was so bad out of the box that I replaced it with the TG from an X-95 (per IWI)-John in Texas

I was wrong, I was referring to Malyuk/Vulcan-M. Not Fort.
This whole thing going over some of the Fort designations is enlightening. The first firearm id ever heard of with the designation was the fort 12 because of Stalker.

The logistics of all these calibers must be a nightmare!!! I think 5.56 was most likely a lean towards NATO but I imagine they had stocks piles of 7.62x39 and 5.45 to use up. It might make sense for them to TRY as best they can standardise to help their resupply effort.
Several Central European countries still have 7.62 Soviet and 5.45 commercial production lines up and running, so its still possible to supply Ukraine in those calibers, but not sure if they can do so in the quantities needed. Plus they still had soviet stockpiles they emptied, but I'm sure that's getting close to the end.

Thanks Ian, definitely leans towards more 5.45 from what I've seen but still lots of 7.62, especially with the Territorial Defence Force units.
National guard was equiped with 5.45, 7.62 might be for SSO
Current army is mostly on 5.45, although busting the military stocks amidst mobilization did bring up a lot of older AKMs in 7.62
With the move to western equipment, they might gradually switch to 5.56 in the future

Ukraine made a rifle similar in design to the Scar based on the AR-18 (Fort 250), but it was not yet ready, even on the Internet and there are materials on it

Fort Makes All kinds of guns from self defense rubber ball shooting pistols to live pistols and Ak74s. There are other Arms manufacturers that make domestic Ukrainian Ar10s and other arms for hunting

All Fort / IWI rifles disappeared from the Fort website some time last year. Apparently, or so it has been said, Israelis were somewhat unhappy with licensed products and pulled off the license.

1)Fort-221/224 are bad with 5.45x39 corrosive ammo you need to clean gun more often also in complect you get only 4-5 magazines for ammo which is not enough you need 7-8
2)IPI Vulcan had problems in erlier models (with ak style fire control switch) 2019 version got rid of them i personally would say it feel more compact (weight evenly dispersed) with much better back up sight for more info you need to talk directly with user
for what i know it get new barrel (brand new not from ak fresh design that greatly improved accuracy)

@@michaelhamar3305 that sounds fishy. The Tavor may be the easiest rifle to clean corrosive priming residue from of any I have handled. Part of the reason I was anticipating the 5.45x39 conversion kit was the ease of cleaning the rifle compared to an AR and even more so the AK.
@@dbmail545 i think his point was that cleaning is a pain no matter what, but that with corrosive there is a required timeframe that needs to be met after firing. It doesn't matter if you shoot one magazine or 12, still pretty much full disassembly would be needed

I would put that down to poor training. The Tavor is easier to clean with water than an AK in my personal experience. I bought my Tavor in 2013 because IWI-US announced that they would be making a 5.45x39 conversion kit for it and I had goodly stash of corrosively primed 7n6 to shoot. They dropped that option BEFORE the 7n6 ban so I suspect that they had inside information that the ban was coming.

I would love to but the company that assembles them hasn't given a great deal of information. The IWI weapons in service I believe were made in Israel. If there's some good sources let me know!

India has imported IWI tavor for usd 5000 per bullpup rifle. It is sold exuberant expensive and cannot of compete with a Ak-47/74 either 7.92x39 or 5.45x39 krinikov

IWI have the same deal with India and other countries. For example, an Indian factory makes them for the Indian Army.
Yes they do. I've enquired with the Indian partner company but they have never confirmed how much production happens locally.

@@ifyoudontfailyouarenoteven6210 yeah it's pretty neat sights, it folds down into the rail itself and it's flush and also doesn't get in the way of Mounting something even where it folds down. Only Problem I see with it is that it looks very fragile, I imagine it would bend very easily if banged around
Those embedded sights also have tritium glow in for night shooting.

They like them!
Bullpups fit in vehicles really well while retaining muzzle energy. SMG length standard format rifles leave something to be desired in the rolling country side of Ukraine. Loud. Lots of muzzle flash and not great accuracy beyond a few hundred meters.

Probably corruption and kickbacks. Ukraine has around one million AK-74s and possibly as many AKMs in the 5.45×39mm and 7.62×39mm calibres and switching calibres or rifle would be needlessly expensive especially at a time of war. It would make much more sense to upgrade existing rifles in service.

It remains the weapon of choice for most SF and the armies who have trials. The current conflict (and others) show that most given a choice prefer an AK.

Interestingly the Israelis are taking the Tavor rifle out of frontline service, and replaced by stocks of M4 rifles.
The Israeli News Channel ( strictly security).mention this a couple of months ago, and I presume this is still in I24 archive.
I remember that. They denied this to be the case following that report so it remains to be seen!
I suspect that what has really happened is that surplus M4s were transferred to Israel after the US exit from Iraq and Afghanistan - which is exactly what happened with M16A1s and CAR15s after the US departure from Vietnam. So many in fact that the Galil program stopped being cost effective as the Colt rifles were free.
Probably with the US aid they can get free M-4s (They can use the US aid only on American products).
Also, IWI came out with the IWI Carmel. I wonder if the IDF will adopt them.
I doubt they’ll change everyone to the m4. They had m4s before and decided to switch. Though not everyone switched. The paratroopers still us the m4 for example. And the coed units usually also use the m4.
@@bennywolfe4357 They had a mish mash of M16A1s and CAR15s that had been continually rebuilt and upgraded into the 2000's. They didn't have "M4" carbines they had a lot of weapons rebuilt to that spec.
I hope ukraine fought off the russians and then maybe we could import some of these weapons for ourselves.
