- One of the most prominent rifles of the ongoing war in Ukraine has been a bullpup - the Vulcan / Malyuk. Designed and developed by Ukrainian company IPI, the Vulcan has been adopted by elements of the Ukraine's Special Forces and frequently seen in imagery from the war.

I used this bullpap in battles. In the army, it is called Vulkan-M and uses the 7.62 cartridge. As standard, it has a silencer, an Aimpoint sight and a vertical grip. When using subsonic rounds, the silencer is especially useful. Sorry for my English.

"Malyuk" is a very soft word in Ukrainian. It means "a baby". When my wife was pregnant, we called my parents and told them that soon we would have a malyuk. A very memorable moment.

То что вы имеете ввиду, на английском языке скорее будет звучать " MALYOK" , вообще малёк это маленькая рыбка, детей тоже так называют , в основном в Украине, украинская мова вообще очень ласковая, непонятно почему эту модель назвали "MALYUK" , ему больше подходит действительно первый вариант - РЕБЁНОК, а "MALYUK" - МАЛЮК это больше на тюркское название похоже... The most interesting thing to me is that the magazines appear to drop free when the release is pushed. That seems to make reloads a LOT faster than usual on the AK platform.
Yes, seems to have been something they have designed in from early on. I like that they have the two magazine releases too.

The use of 7.62x39mm ammo/magazine seems to hurt the ergonomics a bit. They should have stick with the 5.45 version, I think.
They emulated the AR15 with the fast drop magazine
Clearly Ukraine has some very talented engineers. The bullpup design will help with cqb of urban warfare within th cities, but still allow the fighters to have the range when out in the flat open land of Ukraines countryside. Has anyone figured out how they managed to keep the "rock-in" style old AK mags, yet have them drop free?
There's an elf in there who kicks it out when you push the incentive button by the trigger.
This weapon has zero to do with the Tavor and its tooling.

I believe the front locking nut of the magazine is spring loaded.
Kind of like a BM59, but better: it works even when removing magazines.
We had ak bullpups for decades. They might be ergonomically superior but all the smokes from ejector literally fly into your eyes and you always have to have spare glasses jus in case. Also it's the same problem as for tar21 - you get a lot of smoke on your right cheek and it leaves a mark.

There are three big improvements I see compared to typical bullpup conversions:
1. The completely redesigned straight in/out magazine release system with an AR style button.
2. Cross bolt safety near trigger
3. A rigid 1913 interface for modern optics mounting. This one is probably the most important and why UA SF ordered them.
Agree. It's a well designed chassis. They haven't been afraid to sacrifice more of the original rifle in order to achieve their aims.
i think the mag is still angle in? but from front -> rear lock into rear -> front lock which also fix the bullpup ak issues
4. it eats AK mags, unlike any other bullpup UA SF were choosing from.

It's not a conversion by the way, it started as one, but ended to be a different weapon, with a different barrel.
The more I look into these the more I believe it is an ingenious design. For example, the trigger transfer bar appears to be a "pull" type rather than a "push" type. newer bullpup designs use a pull system because it delivers a better trigger pull. I have a steyr aug and the old gen "push" system is what leads to the spongy trigger. It appears Ukrainians have been modernizing this indigenous design lockstep with modern bullpup developments. I think probably this is the best "bullpup ak" rifle ever made. Would love to get my hands on one.

What do you think of FN 2000? It can be fired from any shoulder without picking the structure.

I'd say because its ugly and somewhat over complicated with its forward eject system and enclosed receiver.

Very good for ambidextrous use, Ive been told it has significant problems when firing prone, the brass piles up in front of you and blocks the ejection port unless you keep sweeping the spent casings away.
‘AK bullpup’ has disaster written all over it, but apparently this one’s pretty good.
Still better than an AR18 bull pup -SA80- cough…..

@@MostlyPennyCat The concept is not inherently bad, but examples of bullpupped AKs mostly have been so far. Many have been conversion kits of dubious quality, or prototypes that never really entered full production, and there's the simple fact the ergonomics of an AK, especially the selector lever, don't really translate well into bullpups without considerable changes. And as this weapon has developed, it has indeed made those changes, rather than trying to keep with as much of the base rifle as possible as has often been the case in other kits and attempts.

The promo video itself seems more akin to what a Western firearms company puts out, and generally gives off a more professional vibe from the troops using it, showing the product in use rather than relying on showing it off doing a million crazy stunts.
That is fascinating. Great inginuity. Manual of arms nightmare though with all of the different versions.
The commercial is also splendid! Much like a blend between a us army commercial and some flavor of big-arse-truck commercial.
When I first saw this rifle in action my response was "...But, why?" This video did an excellent job of explaining the benefits of the retrofit. Magazine loading looks awkward but nothing that training can't fix. If more information becomes available I'd love to see a follow up explaining the changes to the gas block/system. Many have tried to make a good bullpup AK, and even more have failed doing so.
The Ukranians really did it tho. This is IMHO the perfect bullpup AK ever created.

As former FAMAS G2 operator, i'm realy interrested from this ukrainian bullpup assaut rifle...i was never conviced from the standard choice AR15 type rifle like the HK416 adopted in replacement from the FAMAS. Bullpup as many advantages (long barell/low overall lenght, perfect balance), only need a bit more training to be same fast for magazine changes as with a AR type rifle...The best Bullpup i known is the Thales F90 made for the australian army...
That's so cool! They really managed to retain the best of the AK in this design. This is, hands-down, the coolest AK based bullpup. Now, after they win this ridiculous war, I hope they export, or better yet, manufacture, them here in the U.S..

@@Rickrolled5997 it's been done before, but context is important. There's really nothing preventing Russia from keeping the strategic territories they are taking. Unlike the US and it's "forever wars" that seemingly have no end goal and just end pointlessly and then start somewhere else. Putin has an actual concrete and achievable goal and can just get it. A few rag tag fighters with lacking or dated equipment isn't going to overwhelm the might of a larger, better equipped, better financed, and better organized military, especially when they are just trying to take key points and not "nation build" or "keep the peace" or whatever. This isn't an Afghanistan situation, the only way Russia loses is if politics or economics make the war not worthwhile and such things are far beyond the control of the Ukrainians themselves and more up to the world powers and how they feel about the whole thing. The Ukrainians can put up a fight and slow them down, but Putin is getting that port.
Plus this is modern warfare, can't hide if the enemy has drones with thermal vision. Can't take cover if they can precisely hit your particular window with a missile fired from miles away. They can just encircle, out range and precisely bombard where they want and then let the survivors flee rather then box then in and fight bitterly to the death. This isn't WWII with inaccurate artillery barrages, modern guided munitions mean you basically never miss and can always see your enemies. Again, they only need the certain locations at a time and can inch forward from there. Grit and determination alone ain't winning this advanced war. It's just a matter of how much Putin wants to spend to win/ geopolitical factors.
I sympathize with the Ukrainians who are fighting to defend their lands, but I know how the Last Samurai ended. All the determination and clever underhanded tactics didn't change the gap in power, once they charged the Gatling gun their fate was sealed. Same with the Ukrainians, I doubt they will be able to retake what is lost; they will only slow down and harass. Unless by some miracle the Russian leadership becomes completely retarded and starts throwing everything away and making every mistake humanly possible. The Ukrainians aren't winning without outside intervention. Most likely Putin "strikes a deal" to end the conflict that heavily favors Russia and forces Ukraine to play by Russia's rules instead of America's. That would make Putin seem "merciful" and the good guy and seem more modern and less barbaric.
TLDR; this isn't America dicking around in the sand box to the tune of laughing elites. I highly doubt the Ukrainians can defeat the Russians on their own in a conventional military victory. And Russia is used to sanctions and "being the bad guy", they were bred for this war.
@@MALICEM12 a couple of things: Russia can't keep this up because of hardcore sanctions, if oil and gas embargo is implemented they're done for. Ukraine is actually better equipped in some areas thanks to foreign aid and volunteers, moreover Russia can't produce more tanks while Ukraine gets tanks from the West. Ukraine actually has more people on the ground then Russia, without mobilisation the russians can't win this war

Love the mag release and the drop free. Wish they'd taken the opportunity to add a full BHO on empty though.

Lack of BHO is a limitation of the magazine design, however AK mags with this feature do exist. Croatia makes them IIRC
I bet after the war parts kits for converting AK's to these will sell like hot cakes on the US market.
Wonder if anyone has 3D models or design files already? I can see airsoft replicas of these being a *very* popular product in the coming years.
It started as an AK conversion kit, but it ended as a different weapon. It has it's own barrel now, which Ukraine produces, it has more rifling in it, which gives it much more accuracy.
Being a non military person and from the information given, so this is a Ak variant but in bullpup form. If i can say it looks amazing and functions really well under difficult conditions and love the rail and attachment points and the ability to make it left hand or right handed. Nassesaty is the mother of invitation.
You know what I find really interesting? How they didn’t ditch 7.62x39 and has made a version to use that. The M43 has turned out to be a much more practical round in this war despite the obvious ballistic compromises
It's awesome at under 300m. I'd rather use it than 5.45 in urban warfare and cqb.
If you've got the barrels use them.

How so more practical? Fewer roumds carried, increased recoil, effect on target is very little increased or even less than 5.45, effective range drops by 1/3rd? Practically everyone has 5.45 over there, btw.

That's an intersting reload! AK mags are usually nose-in rock-back type, but from the promo videos, they seem to have made it heel-first rock-forward instead. I really want a close-up on how they made that work, as an AK magazine has a lip on the front of the magazine and a lug in the rear to engage the latch in a typical AK mag well.
They state that the mags are made to fall free of their own weight and that is shown in the promo video too. My guess would be they just took the AK mag well and reversed it.
So now instead of a nose first, then rock the ass back with the mag release holding the ass in. It is ass first then nose and the mag sits at a bit of an angle with the release holding the nose so when engaged it just moves away and lets the mag fall of its own weight. Kinda of a smart way to handle it honestly.
I really hope they import these to the US cause I would love to get my hands on one (bullpups and AKs being the main part of my armory)

While I'm not a bullpups fan I love seeing innovation I hope this whole bloody mess gets resolved soon with no more loss of life

if UKA soldiers arent replacing them for AKM's and ak12 from deceased foes, then that means it is at least as good if not better than those platforms, which is saying a lot

captured weapon dont have spare part available . also same caliber doesn't mean it interchangeable . for example during ww2 british and german use the same 9×19mm Parabellum caliber smg but german mp40 can't not fire british 9mm round and other way around
The Sten and MP40 could fire the same rounds. Magazines were different.

Hell you could just take parts from one captured AK and use them to fix another captured AK, I'm pretty sure you can find AKs easily ok the Frontlines, also you don't know what you are talking about in respect to ammo, 9mm Parabellum is the same anywhere in the world, there are other types of 9mm but rounds have standardized all around the world for ease of trade
@@iutarogirotto5110 during invasion of normandy british made a small tweak in their 9mm rounds to prevent it being used by german if they capture the ammo . since then german mp40 can't not fire british 9mm round if german manage to capture the ammo . and AK12 don't use AK74 or AK47 spare part

Not to be captain obvious; but it’s pretty clear that this is a cost effective way of making a more modern and western looking rifle out of old Soviet rifles.
Obviously done in efforts to make Ukraine more western and get away from anything that associates them with Russia and the USSR.
Personally I think it’s a great and cost effective solution to doing so and I think the rifle looks awesome too.

I think the original reasoning was quite different: 1) make a compact rifle for dismounting from APCs, 2) have an easy and standardized way of mounting optics and other devices (a pain for soviet origin rifles), while also 3) utilizing any existing AK variant parts.
The fact that it doesn't look much like AK anymore is a nice bonus :-)
@@SergMuller seconded. If there is any aesthetic reason, its to show its quality finish and that its catching up with the times. Politics may have influence aesthetic but I doubt its the first thing they have in mind

It's a learning period to change mags, but otherwise only benefits with bullpup. Less barrel rise = faster reaim is the one I appriciated during my 6 yrs in FFL. The Famas was an extension in one word.

Same. I imagine what will be sold on the civilian market are the K-01 and K-02 semi auto variants. The first fires 7.62x39 and the second fires 5.56x45.

@@TheArmourersBench No problem mate, I passed it on to my similarly gun nut pals here in New Zealand. Yes, I had seem some murmurings about this gun and its predecessor before. It is interesting to compare Russian and Ukrainian attempts at a bullpup system. I think the Eastern bloc countries have been far more enthusiastic about bullpups than the West has, where it seems that nations are gradually replacing those they had and not developing many new ones. I think it is a great shame as the bullpup is a great fit for a marksman rifle. The British Army went with a 16 inch barrel AR so that sharpshooters could still fight well in enclosed spaces, wouldn't it have been better if a 20 or more inch barrel bullpup had been developed instead? It also makes sense for special forces (door kicker types) and those typically mounted in or crewing vehicles. If they'd upgraded something like the L22, you'd have a far shorter gun than a Mk18 type carbine but with comparable or better accuracy and energy retention.
It seems like the bullpup AK as a concept generates a lot of interest, I remember the Vepr appeared in Call of Duty weirdly enough and I think a bullpup AK was in the Metro games as well.

Great for AK owners who already have 5.45 mags, although I suppose the 5.56 might get the biggest benefit from the longer barrel bull pup design.

I seem to recall that Tavor clones by Fort are in service as well?
Yes they are! RPC Fort assemble parts sent from IWI apparently, so there's various Tavor models.
Looks like a pretty cool bullpup conversion, and probably the best one done from an existing rifle.
I think all that's left to do is to give it the last few modern ergonomic features such as a bolt hold open on the last round (which may require a new magazine follower design), and a bolt release paddle/button/lever to more quickly chamber a round than pulling the charging handle.
The separated safety switch and push button is a workable solution and the Brits have the same thing going on their L85s. I don't think it's a huge deal since 99% of trained troops and scenarios call for semi-auto fire anyway, but if they can just figure out how to make the safety switch entirely on the firing grip that would be gold too.

Reload time seems a issue with the massive distance between the mag and the grip point. Fascinating engineering and beautiful ton look at
the first and only AK platform that I could acually like :P
Pretty cool. My Tavor X95 isn't my most favorite rifle. But it's quite effective and keeps the better ballistics of a 16.5 inch barrel, and basically owns in tight quarters and vehicles, while still being able to easily punch out to 500+ yards. Especially with black hills mark 262 77 grain rounds

The base rifle looks awesome but that whisper variant looks mean as hell.

Vulcan is an old name for prototypes when old AKs were used for rework. Malyuk uses completely new parts.
Valmet did something similar back in the 80's with the m82.

I want some of the following features.
1) I'd like it in short stroke system, rather than a long stroke system. Also, multi position gas regulator too
2) instead of a cross bolt safety, I'd like to have the safety/fire selector of Walther w2000 sniper.
3) this is kinda optional, I'd like to have a ambidextrous bolt.

Interesting seeing how the magazine's go in, there must be something like a spring to catch the front magazine lug which is something I've only rlly seen on sporting Vepr/Saiga shotguns

Малюк (malyuk) means not just baby creature (primarily human babies are called malyuk), but also simple "little one" referencing size, not age of object. Second meaning is more fitting and, I believe, was intended by creators
Should stick with 5.45 or 5.56. The curve on the 7.62 mags get them real close to the pistol grips and makes insertion more of an issue. The straighter 5.45 mags give a little more room to operate. Or go with 20 round mags, which is my choice for my Springfield Hellion.

There's a review video by Azov Regiment operator where he also compares it to AK/AR platform but it's in Russian.
Ukrainians have a license to manufacture a wide range of IWI/IMI weapons, including Tavors. They are very familiar with the platform.

i saw a personal security guard carrying one of these in the background of a news report just the other day and wondered what it was. thought maybe a TAR-21 at first.
" Yuriy Lutsenko, then head of Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine, announced on October 1, 2008 that Israel Weapon Industries and the Ukrainian research and production company RPC Fort would jointly manufacture Tavor bullpup assault rifles to enter service with special Ukrainian military and police units. RPC Fort had displayed working samples of Tavors chambered in 5.45×39mm cartridge with Milkor 40mm UBGL grenade launchers to showcase to Ukrainian security forces officers as a means of convincing them to buy Ukrainian-made Tavors for special forces units. In December 2009, a resolution was adopted to purchase the Fort 221 chambered in 5.45x39 for Ukrainian intelligence/border guard agencies, purchased in small numbers. It was subsequently adopted in 2014 for Ukrainian military and police forces also in 5.45 caliber " - so according to this it could be a TAR -21 build under license, chambered in 5.45×39mm.

@@TheArmourersBench They should have known better. They should have moved all the production capability underground to begin with, just like the Brits and the Germans did in WW2. They will get bombed never the less. There is no other way to look at it. Russia is going to bomb every last bit of production capability and staging area they can find. Also they will strike every command center, every military base. You name it...

In many ways, it looks like a modernized version of the AK bullpup kits that were available here in the US for the last 20+ years. Hopefully these are better than those were.

Theres some really good rifles coming out of central and eastern europe now that theyre finally moving on from AKs, personally I love czech assault rifles. Id like to see this Malyuk in either 5.56 or even 6.5/6.8.
