    My squad was attached to a 10th Group A team in 2004. Well, we basically took security of their GMVs so that they could do the "Teach the Iraqis" job. Well, before the mission, this 18B hands me "fresh e4" a smaw and then tried to crash course the thing for me.
    Me: im just gonna go grab an AT4.
    18B: yeah probably a good idea.
    The thing is pretty complicated compared to the AT4. That mission was pretty cool though. I got to control a .50 with IR spot, they gave me an M79, I was standing on more .50 than I saw the entire deployment before, and my ROE was "if we take fire, we're gonna clear out and you guys are gonna level the building."

      I can see why people are confusing them, they're so rarely seen anywhere. I've no idea how many are in inventory now.
      That does sound like like a decent job, getting hands on with some kit for a change. An M79, interesting.

      I was attached to an SF ODA in Iraq. Officially I was a PSYOP Specialist, doing counter propaganda, putting out pro-Iraqi govt media, but they left that to my Team Leader and ATL, me the SPC, was really "HMMWV driver and turret gunner" instead. I remember having that M79 thumper as well. Supposedly when we redeployed back, someone wanted the SF guys to turn the M79 over to a museum (hopefully vs just being scrapped), but they "forgot" it in the truck when we RIP'd out . We got to fire all sorts of small arms I'd never gotten to see before, including the Carl Gustav (before the Army finally got wise and began buying them in numbers), the SCAR, basically the SMAW-D was about the only common small arm I didn't get to fire with them (they did let me drop a 120mm mortar illumination round once, that was a trip, though I'm glad I wasn't an 11C lugging the tube around!)

    I don't get the fascination & obsession everyone has with AT weapons. It's as if something isn't designed to kill tanks then it doesn't count. Trust me, in an urban setting, having the ability to hit and destroy light vehicles and killing or maiming all the squishy meat bags inside is going to have a much better negative effect on enemy morale than knocking out tanks does. 10+ invading Russians in a truck dying or 8 in a BMP is better than 3 in a tank.

      Well and just barricaded enemies. Since even invading enemies need to set up defences after coming to area either by building or taking over bunker and fortified positions. As such in counter-attack such "bunker buster" will be usefull.
      Since any defence army's strategy would be "they invade, we delay and withdraw in fighting defence, deplete them and then counter attack to take back ground lost in the fighting retreat used to deplete assaulting forces."

    What is better for the Ukrainian Army is the reloadable version of SMAW-D the Mk153 SMAW with the 2nd soldier carrying the reloadable Tube. M141 is like the M72 law of the Vietnam War era in design principle. Even though there's a modernized M72law made in Norway available for Purchase by Ukrainian Army including a Drone that can use M72 LAW. EpicThe112
      I remember an old WW2 training vid for infantry vs tanks, which can still be found here on YT, which needed all of two Molotovs, one over the driver’s ports, and the other in the engine bay to effect a mobility kill. The draw back would be the close proximity, to the tank itself and the dismounted infantry.
      Also, these smaller, “cheaper,” munitions can be used to deplete the APS for sure-kill systems that cost more. An RPG7 would be best, as its probably the cheapest such munition for this.
      The drone idea sounds about ideal for dealing with this issue.

    • @Korruptor
      @Korruptor 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Drew Peacock
      Those sensors are _within_ the APS shield range, thus you would need to deplete the system first, or somehow get lucky with shrapnel. We don’t know if they would react to something as small as a bullet, but a precise shot would be extremely dangerous and low probability for an enemy whose battle plan high mobility.
      As they are turret-mounted, and other videos show them reacting linearly, if true then the top down-mode of the Javelin may be the best MBT counter since it approaches almost outside of the APS’ vector.

    • @Korruptor
      @Korruptor 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Drew Peacock
      See the “lucky with shrapnel” portion.
      Two, top down attacks seem to be a vulnerability of active protection systems, particularly the Russian version.
      Three, air-burst munitions are designed to expend themselves over a large surface area, whereas the APS only needs to protect a small portion thereof.
      Fourth, APS are designed to _deflect,_ atleast ours are, kinetic penetrators. How that will affect something like canister shot is anyone’s guess, but as they work in nearly converging lines one may аssume the greatest protection would be afforded to the turret, where the sensors are.

      Counter attacking is actually vital part of defense. Enemy continuously thin out your defense lines, break through first and maybe second line of defense and defenders need to eliminate/kick them out before they push in reinforcements and try to pocket your army. Attackers have advantage of using heavy artillery barrages on fixed positions of enemy and attacking before they repair the damage done.

      when an attacking force takes a target area they start fortifying because there is usually a counter attack it id ver important to dig in and it is very important to counter attack before the aggressors can be reinforced. so the defenders would be wanting to weaken any defences the attackers are working on.

      The US presence (and the other NATO advisory teams) probably total around a hundred or so personnel. Not really a justification for massing 100,000 plus troops on the border of a sovereign country. Its pretty typical for States to invite allied nations in to train and exercise too so I don't know. I believe they have all been pulled out now anyway due to the threat of invasion.

A conflict, or possible conflict in the East is a great distraction for them. I was also talking about the mass supplying of weapons to the Ukraine, not advisor's. I agree every nation has the right to sovereignty. I also understand Russia wanting a non Nato member as a buffer on its border.
