As both Lego, and Transformers collector I quite like how this turned out, and can't wait to build display this. Bug mode is absolutely fine for what it is, and the transformation is a lot more involved having about as many steps if not more than a modern deluxe significantly smaller in size. Not sure how Megatron would work as I don't see Lego creating him as either a gun or tank, but Soundwave would be really cool. On the Autobot side Cliffjumper would be fun to see as all they would have to change is the exterior paneling and face print.
Lego missed a trick. The original toys had thermally-activated stickers which revealed the autobot (or deception) logos when you warmed them with your thumb. The idea was that, in car mode, the bots were incognito. That would’ve been a cool, cheap & easy detail to include rather than just a regular sticker
@@frineythegiraffe8059 they’re just stickers. You get them on cheap thermostats and were stuck onto toys cheaper than Lego. You can see one in shot in this video (original toy). I think it’s viable but my point is moot… the set doesn’t come with it. Maybe I could sell aftermarket stickers and make my fortune 🤭
Didn't really like it at first, but after seeing multiple videos, it starts to grow on me, plus I've seen this set for preorder at my local shop for 60€ which is great price for set like this, probably will get this
Hmmm… I feel like (myself being a HUGE Bumblebee fan) I will purchase this set. I mean at first glance, it didn’t look too good but after seeing your review, I’m beginning to change my mind… Thank You RB! And I would love to know which of the two Lego Transformers you like more!
Robot mode is great. Car mode is rough. I got 2 Optimus sets to display him both ways but I'll just stick to 1 for this one. Hopefully MOC makers make an improved version of the car
Fun Fact: In the microchange line, the alt mode for Bumblebee is a toy car, a Penny Racer, which is why it has those weird proportions and huge silver plate on the back. It was designed to be a 1:1 scale transformer.
That is a solid bumblebee! thank you for the great presentation and sharing so many interesting aspects of the build! BTW: I made a transformer for 42147 without cheating! ...for people who want some pricey lego transformer action.😁
My first ever transformer was when I was 4 years old and I got Optimus prime then after that 10 years later I have one HUGE bucket of random transformers
It's an impressive achievement at this scale. I'm not a huge transformers fan so I won't buy it (I'm more inclined towards the rumored F40) but it's a fantastic model.
What is interesting to me that, If I would see a realistic Vw bug like the first demo by the designers, I feel the model is kind of cheap. I mean it has to have some flavour of character in the car form also. Optimus is a well defined iconic truck, something we dont see in roads, but a yellow Vw beetle is just a yellow Vw. And here we have a bulky, cute and different Vw, which at first glance throws me back but than I find convincing. That stylised look in the car form is needed some how.
I think the vehicle mode looks more like a VW Beetle than the original toy did, to be fair. And the robot mode looks more like the G1 animated character than the original toy did.
Hasbro tried tried twice to give us brickbuild robots that need to be taken apart if you want either robot or vehicle. The more i see this Bumblebee, the more i like it. Yes the vehicle isn't perfect, but that it transforms makes it good
I'm not a Transformer's huge fan, and not specially a Bumblebee one (even though I admit the character rocks). I grew up with the G1 Optimus Prime toy (and a few others, including SideSwipe) but didn't watch the cartoons. Still, I really enjoy this bumblebee ! It looks terrific. When I was 10yo, my best friend and I tried to build cars that would transform into robots, so this set really appeals to me. And since there the bare minimum stickers and the price tag is very correct, I might commit on beginning of July. I totally disagree that a more authentic non transformable version would be better in the long term. I fail to understand non-transformable toys (unless they offer a mad level of realism with micro details, weathering etc.... but that is a very "niche" market IMO) I really like the car version. Yes it doesn't really match a real beetle, but that makes it even more genuine to me : some TF toy weren't exactly right in proportion since they had to transform. My only complaint would be the lack of "foldable knees" but here again most TF toys didn't have those either. But, now, since the Countach is also being released in Lego I'm adding to my "list to Santa " a Lego SideSwipe Transformer ! (or wait for some highly talented builder to make one)
After handling Lego bumblebee. I prefer how the vehicle mode feels over Optimus prime. The transformation feels more intentional with things locking in. Where Optimus feels kinda loose
Really cool review. I like the transformers. Back in 1985 when I was in the states, we watched alle the time. Transformaers, robots in the sky.. where megatron…. Lego, we want megatron.
That's what I thought it was back in the 80s when it was aired on the TV. Later I learned it is "Robots in disguise". 😁 And as much as I would want it, a transformable Megatron is most likely not going to happen. His alt forms in the old cartoons are either a gun or a tank. Not that it matters much, because "Soundwave SUPERIOR!!".
@@shaunstorey23 Didn't even remember that part of the manual. It would be going against the rules Lego set for themselves (no (current) military/guns etc). And a tank alt mode wouldn't be G1 (84). So we'll just have to see. They should do Soundwave in my opinion though, he's just as iconic and his forms are practically made for being brick built.
