The ULTIMATE valvetrain for my Turbo Junkyard Big Block
ฝัง
- เผยแพร่เมื่อ 5 ส.ค. 2023
- One of the biggest issues with my Turbo 8.1 was it floated the valves around 5,500 RPM and 20 lbs of boost. We want to spin the engine faster and make more power in the upper RPM range, so we swapped in a larger duration cam, but also needed better valve springs to support more boost and RPM. Valvetrain upgrades might not be the sexiest part of building engines, but its definitely one of the more important parts to making an engine do what you ask of it. Today, we go over the valvetrain and top end assembly of our Junkyard refreshed turbo big block.

"Do things right, every single time, even if nobody's watching." Best life advice I've heard!!
Integrity is the Name
Do it right or don't do it at all
Looking good!
That turned out really nice.
His shop is going to be renowned and the go to place for quality builds. I can’t wait to see his hard work pay off.
Might need to have him build you a more powerful 8.1 for that wrecker. 😜
I need a RCSB GMT800 with an 8.1L in my life. Every time I watch one of your videos with 8.1L content, it has the wheels turning. I need a rusty(cheap) 2500 series SUV donor with the 8.1L & 4L85E, and a clean V6 RCSB - because no one can get upset about engine swapping a V6 truck.
Life On Limiter has Turboed the LU3, it is a good engine. Heck it smoked tires on my 03 Sierra lol.
@@shadowopsairman1583 I grew up drooling over the 90-93 454 SS trucks when they were new on dealers lots. I'd like a modern version. Nothing sounds quite like a big block IMO.
Glad to see you back in action. That is sometimes the best remedy to heal. I've been there had that happen too.
Love this LT!!! Can't wait to see it going again! Thanks for taking us along for the ride!
I'm really happy to see you running your own shop. I know it's a lot of work, but it's nice to have a place to get your projects done along with stuff that pays the bills.
Those guides are adjustable. Without cutting. You seem to have to do things the hardest possible way.
Not adjustable enough though, I couldn’t get the rocker tips where I wanted, or one would be centered and the other would be way off. But you are correct, I do always do things the hard way
We appreciate the attention to those details you point out, such as the valve spring heights. We can go watch anyone "just roll with it". Stay the careful course!!.. Great vid, thanks..
Greetings from the farm in S Carolina!!
Glad to see the 8.1 big block coming together!! It should run great!!
my 8.1 swap is finally done. been driving it for 2 weeks, and i absolutely love it. the driveability of the 8.1 with an nv4500 behind it is amazing.
Congratulations!!
What did u put it in?
I always learn so much watching these videos.
Looks great! Protect your eyes when cutting, we'd like to ba able to keep watching all the great content!
Those valve covers remind me of the one that came on my 87 quad-4 Buick Skyhawk
my dream to have this engine in my silverado here in Brazil! his sound is amazing!
Really appreciate you leaving links to the tools you use. Thanks a lot.
Good work ready to see it in action with the results.
Enjoyed the update.
I would think you would like a little more spring pressure on the intake valve since you will be pushing over 20 lbs of boost.
You do want more seat pressure. You find the surface area of the valve. There is a formula for this it's only the seat pressure your worried about on that, but typically if seat pressure is higher then so is open pressure.
That's dependent on the rocker ratio and cam lift/duration characteristics. Boosting requires a certain level of Ring Gap.
@@thatturbotruckits called spring rate for valvetrain stability at higher RPMs. There is a such thing as too much spring rate even. Ring gap is the biggest thing on any Super or Turbo charged engine. His RPMs he is pushing will determine his valvetrain setup
@@shadowopsairman1583 I'm aware lol I shift my combo at 7200 and that's only because that's what my combo is setup for I would need more camshaft to go any higher. It can go higher right now but it's diminishing returns after that
Can't wait to see it back on the road!
Bet your excited to hear it come back to life
Definitely port the intake! I’m glad your back on 8.1 videos!
Does he have a flowbench?
Glad to see you back, Brother! Hope all is well. Show us more of that Wagoneer swap! Try wrinkle finish on the valve covers. Just a suggestion. #bunghole
You done it the best way, good job bro!
Nice work LT
Glad your finding time for the ugly truck .
2:41 am here on the east coast and im in the shop with the degree wheel on my 8.8
I kept saying to myself, I want to see the Wagoneer in the background. Then you showed it. 😂. I am about to start the LS swap on my Cherokee Chief.
Always be better safe than sorry, your doing it right!
It must work. We need raceway footage soon.
Porting the intake would be a interesting video. I vote yes!
Love your videos man! As often as i see you using the Roll lock gringing stuff, might I recommend adding the Milwaukee right angle die grinder to your tool collection. I bought one and I don't know how I ever lived without it before.
I just recently put a head together for my 1.8T with BC valves and Supertech springs. I didn't even care to check installed height! Lol
I always set valve spring installed height up so that the spring is between .050” - .060” from spring bind at max valve lift. The valve spring stays out of oscillation when operated close to coil bind.
Great video Liked the attention to detail also givng part number ,vendor, cost Remi ded me of other great automitive journalism like Car Craft was in the Asher / Voeglin era keep up the good work
Hey LT, the pcv should be 4 port 2 on each bank cut down on valve and push rod warping due to thermal inconsistencies with single port pcv setups. Also the lines can be -6 tee'd together. Also I'm not saying where, but there is an oil return port for a catch can on the 8.1l built in. They knew that engine needs a pcv, as I don't consider porting hot oil fumes out the exhaust pipe a pcv system, neither did they it seems.
Nice work 👍
Great info thank you for sharing!!
Great show! The Lincoln is done?
Congrats, you made that valve height issue about 13 steps more difficult than it should've been.
Genuine question - how would you have approached it to make it simpler?
Comp makes seat cutters that locate off of the guide if you want to adjust installed height.
I hadn’t thought about that option, but would be a good one.
nice work ...
Hey LT, love the video and the Ugly truck is my favorite. Is there any reason you are not using ARP studs or bolts for the head bolts? Are the stock bolts going to survive?
Hello LT. Hope business is doing well at the shop, brother.
Big Scott, Findlay Ohio
You should film some of the shop content as well. We would watch too.
LT -hope you saw FabRats having issues with broken guides. They look just like the ones you have. The telltale apparently is the notch is machined below the bend.
Also ISTR that having a slight offset was helpful in causing the valves to rotate. Though that may be a Rover V8 thing (Buick 300).
Only built a couple of Rover V8s so not an expert at all.
Cheers mate from the UK
I'm on the fence to build on did the rims like your have a full lowing kit there did up grade on brakes one front 2019 four piston calibers bigger rotors will do back later !
You should call that engine the 8 point fun!
Couple questions/comments. First, I typically measure for pushrod length like you. However, I was recently turned onto the Christ Straub method of ensuring the rocker arm/pushrod is at a 90 degree angle at mid lift. Check out this video (ill find and link below). I think you may like/prefer it. Second, is the plan to have vacuum pulled on “one side” (i.e., one valve cover) and then you just tie the two valve covers together and one has an breather?
Hell yeah might as well port match the runners to the ports while you're at it
Don’t know if you went over it already but why no studs on the heads ?
Love the custom adjustable guide plates, tons ooooo fun. A good pedestal system would be vastly superior long term.
Totally agree! I’ve got a T&D shaft mount setup for my 535 cube other engine build
@@LawrenceTolman excellent, nice stuff, do they offer a Mohawk style arm ???
Running electric vacuum pump on there to pull the pressure out of the crankshaft try to keep it around 15 lb through all our car p.m. rains and maybe up to 20 when you're at peak performance down the quarter mile
Is it worth measuring valve to piston clearances while the setup springs are installed - or did you show that already?
As usual LOVE your work but fess up on the LS swap! Plus did you hire another employee?
Notta high rpm application but it may be desirable to have a varying installed height. Targeting distance to coil bind rather than just installed height.
Ideally you have a bunch of springs to match up sets (cuz ya might have like 0.040" difference in coil bind within the box of the same springs) and the load as well as installed height will be very similar. And based off what the spintron data tells ya you may look to put the spring at an installed height that results in something like 0.040" to coil bind (as measured without deflection and the target will vary).
But individual installed heights based on coil bind clearance (reduce spring surge).
Lawrence - EYE Protection !!!
What happened to the 8.1 with the raylar parts?
I'm sure Pat's smiling at your attention to details with the valves
Now a cool sponsor would be Harbor Freight!!!!
Why not extra spring pressure on the intake since you are boosted? Wouldn't this help with the rpm going higher and more boost??
Without a breather under the valve cover that attached to your vent hose, it might blow a lot of oil out into your catch can on your evc setup. Best to be hooked up to the exhaust pipe to help draw the pressure out of the engine without putting a vacuum pump on it...
Make sure they cut those parallel with the valve side. Something that small can be difficult to hold and keep zero runout
Nvm you already assembled the heads. Should be fine
Good thing LT builds nice stuff, otherwise I’d be worried about him attempting a career as a comedian. 😂
Finally! Someone more OCD than me!!!😆😆 JK, but I would've been thinking about doing the same thing; the only thing is, I didn't know that that modification could be done...🙄🙄 You're da man!🤙
Question:
I know you're building this 8.1 for speed, but (mainly) what would have to be done differently to build an 8.1 for low-end torque (like for a rock crawler)?
why no bend the guides ove with a rubber hammer i have done that to a few sbc builds to get the rockers lined up
How do you like your headlight set ?? I found some down. Here in Florida for $140. Good deal ??
Where did you pick up the invisible safety glasses?
I'd love to send you my 2003 GMC Envoy 5.3 and do a 4L80 swap on her. She's beggin' for upgrades so I thought doing an LSA blower would be in its future as well
You might have to use lash caps. A different length of valve would fix it also on installed height... More money and might not be the cheapest way to go...
that L8T thought
LT i love your work and channel. So please use eye protection🙏
Do you work on L77 engines?
When is the 535 gonna go in?
I need that motor for my boat….would be a great replacement for my mercruiser 496 mag ho…..dierect drop in…..actually i take that back i want the stroker….your bigger one!!!
Definitely cut the intake open and chop that divider out really get it breathing
Should have just used belt sander to take off 50 thou on valvespring pocket things.
Good detailed, rocker roller needs to be put in the center of valve...
Only if the rocker just happens to be the perfect length for where it happens to land on the screw in stud.
Using the ''put it on the center'' method will give you about a 99.5% change of having incorrect rocker geometry.
And incorrect geometry making the pushrods flop around way more than they have to, and pushes on the valve at an angle instead of almost straight down.
The screw in studs and the valves stems aren't parallel. As the rocker gets higher, the closer it gets to the exhaust side of the tip. As the cam lobes get larger, the rocker needs to be mounted lower on the stud, and that pulls it back towards the intake manifold side of the tip.
Funny I’m doing an 8.1 swap into a wagoneer instead of an ls swap like your friends haha
i'm not an engine builder, but I'm curious if the previous pcv setup wasn't a contributor to the big blocks success? Maybe Pat could tell you if the pressure differential between the cylanders and crankcase could cause block failure?
Nope, the crap stock pcv vents to the open exhaust on the passenger bank. Pcv or lack thereof does not cause "block failure" as you put it. It is a source of oil consumption, and acts like a waterboarding session for oil directly in the valve train. Think of it this way, oil gets splashed upward by the crank...vigorously...like blowing bubbles in milk, which then becomes "atomized"(like spray bottle atomized) vaporious oil then clogs the valve train like a wet blanket. This messes with air quality and air fuel ratios, not to mention sheer flow through that oily sauna mist. But no it should not be capable of causing critical engine failure, but it can drown the mpg, and power, not to mention aspirate, not burn but breathe, the oil right out the tail pipe.
@@joshuaelizabethfoster6276 I thought he had it capped
@@markwright2360 nah, when he capped the intake, I think, he basically bypassed the pcv entirely. It runs like pre emissions block, and burns or vents it out the valves backwards. Must smell bad like an old school bus lolol.
Hey your buddy helping you looks like pat
Just a passing comment , oh were just LS swapping a Wagoner . Funny . Has you are building a 1000hp 8.1 !
Fuck ya LT. Use me as a thanks for these videos !
I wonder if the valve pockets are deeper than 1 another. So what I'm saying is maybe you could have the pockets that are more Shallow than 1 another.
Was that forshadowing at the beginning😂
How many years it gonna take to build one engine
With machine shops tomorrow means 1 week, 1 week means 2 weeks
Safty safty safty
Nothing wrong with higher intake spring pressure on a turbo engine where under boost there is pressure on top side of the valve
I'm thinking some forged pistons would have been a good idea, just saying.
👍😊
I know youre super busy but you should try and make good beginner guides for engine building. Or what materials you used to learn?
Nothing like doing it. No time for idle chitchat
At least you don't need T.P. for that bunghole.
Might as well cut the intake open. Get all that air you possibly can lt
169👍's up LT thank you for sharing 😊
Run exhaust springs twenty-five to forty pounds less than the intake springs
Because you got the exhaust holding that exhaust valve shut or trying to push it shut😊
Why not put studs in the engine?
Just trying to manage costs and keep this “junkyard” themed. I’ve got another full build 535 cube (8.1 based) that’s got all the goodies.
I'm sorry but what are Poly locks?
The locking nuts used for adjusting the rocker arm preload
@@LawrenceTolman holy cra p. The main man replied to me. Lol. Thanks. awesome what your doing!
Still waiting for that collab with MORR (Matt's off road)
Get that wrecker moving with power!
It's like a LS small block...
this thing would be awesome at sick week
I cant believe raylar suckers people into buying some of their shit, the rocker arms are just PRW rockers for twice the price, not "similar" or just "identical" they ARE PRW rockers that raylar has just upsold 200%
