What I really dislike about the imitation digicam is that most of the paid-partnership content on TikTok is just just plain false marketing, often including sample photos taken with other digicams from brands such as Canon and Nikon. It's very obvious, I've seen one with a Canon PowerShot date stamp,. They don't try to hide it, and yet people still believe that it takes photos like that.
It's kinda crazy to me how they now market bad digital cameras for an "old-school" feeling. I kinda can get behind the Camp Snap since it's supposed to emulate an old disposable camera, so you have no screen, a plastic viewfinder and absolutely no buttons outside of the flash (of course, an LED) and the shutter, and you can get an "okay" film filter, but those cheap, no-name cameras that are just regular digital cameras? There's literally no point, I've got a couple of mid 00s Canon digicams for free at work (we had a ton of them and they were being send to the recycling since we're now using phones to take pictures) and they're WAY better that what that Vivitar crap can do. I've also bought Mavicas for a lot cheaper than that, something like the FD92 can be found really easily, can use a Memory Stick instead of a floppy disk and will probably take pictures that are more interesting than that since it was MADE to be a good camera back in 2001.
The Camp Snap is actually a pretty cool camera, although a little expensive given what it is, at least in my opinion. These older digicams are so easy to find that it honestly puzzles me why people bother with these "so retro!" Aliexpress cams.
Last year, I gave away my Canon PowerShot SX100 IS to a very close cousin of mine who time to time take photos of wildlife, mainly birds as I'm pretty much decked out with a DSLR and a small range of lenses. She appreciates the superior image quality compared to her phone, especially zoomed and similarity my uncle too when i shot some of their portraits with my DSLR which made me create a motto that "you can't fake glass all the time". As for Tik Tok metas, my guess is as everyone have stated in the comment section, its a mix of consumerism and lack of knowledge but I'll also pin "expectations of instant gratification" (or "the path of least resistance") on the board of reasons too.

Yeah, the worst part for me is that in many cases, you'd be off with a 10 year old phone than one of these. There really isn't a use case for these, because their worse at being retro than a phone, and in some cases the same price as a proper digicam.
The only advancement we’ve made in technology, whether it be phones, cameras, TVs or otherwise is that we’ve made everything cheap and flat, and have given everything the same GUI.

Damn i really didn't appreciate the abundance of "straight to e waste" products out there. I wonder where the money comes from. Obviously with so much supply, and so little demand, you would think people would stop making these, but somehow it feels like they just get more and more common. Sure, most companies manufacturing these will probably go bankrupt at some point, but there is so much money getting basically thrown into the trash, as well as valuable rare minerals
i bought the tiktok digicam and it does give the same feeling but it takes WAY too much effort to reach it, might end up just giving it to a toddler sibling so they play around with it.
Looking back, that would've made more sense lol. I only compared these because I didn't have one of the more pocketable powershots, and they were about the same price.
@@camera-guy I do think the old canon powershots (a4000 a22000 a14000 etc...) make a good substitution for the tiktok camera. Better quality, a flash, and same form factor under $50. Only thing is it's hard to push someone getting into photography to learn all of the hardware of a camera, compare them to a new camera being sold, then trust the seller of a used camera. It's probably best they learn the hard way like many of us did lol. Worst case it's a stepping stone to a camera they'll enjoy.
Hey! Loved the video I also had a question regarding digital cameras ! Have you ever used a casio ex-z110 /kniw anything about it? I saw it at the local thrift store and wanted to buy it but cant rlly find many reviews of it so i thought maybe you would know.
I would say it depends on the price. I personally wouldn't pay more than $35 for it. I don't have any personal experience but I will say that you can look up image samples from specific cameras on flickr to see if they're to your liking: www.flickr.com/cameras/casio/ex-z110/ Best of luck and happy shooting!
Such a shame what happened to vivitar. I still use some of their old lenses with my mirrorless since some are amazing and affordable and often a few are rebranded lenses like takumar etc.
It's a big shame, same with Kodak and (to a lesser extent recently) Polaroid. I'm going to have to pick up some vivitar lenses, I've heard great things.
I'm not here to defend these bad tiktok shop "digicams" at all since they are inherently bad anyways and getting a proper old digicam is still the ideal because it was actually a flagship camera from its time. However from what I know there's a like camera circulating around thats a japan exclusive rn called a Bluemake BM-ODC01 which kinda looks like a canon, has an optical zoom but not that good i think but has a camera output that I'd say isn't as bad as other generic cheap digicams, it captures the sort of old age photography that proper old digicams take, down to even the half press to focus system. Although if given the choice still would go for an old digital camera instead.
@camera-guy Only now did I realize you were at around near 300 ish subscribers which is crazy, it was such a surprise seeing the quality of the content. It remind me of Dank Pods lmao, just some extra notes on the camera I mentioned in my comment, aside from the japanese one by bluemake, there seems to be like chinese reproduction units that are released that are basically the same just with a different splash screen when turned on. Keep in mind that when you do get either a chinese reproduction model or the one straight from japan, they are both wifi enabled, everything except the splash screen and body of the camera should be the same!
@camera-guy agreed. The optical zoom thing is a MUST. if the camera has fixed lens (focus, aperture and zoom, mentioning the firsy 2 because the Fuji X100V exist) then it's just waste.
I had G5 (next model, 5.1Mp otherwise same thing as G3). G3 was $800 in 2002 so it's not like it's something cheap, it's only cheap now because it's old and no one needs it. Looking at my G5 pics now (CRW, i.e. RAW), overall pleasant but noise isn't good even at min ISO even with good light (speedlite or sunlight) and pictures have some line artifacts and fringing even in the center. Problem is small sensor, some smartphones have much bigger sensors today. It's better to buy some very old (6-10Mp) used APS-C/DX DSLR, quality would be so much better, G3/G5 powershots - only good as collector's items.
I don't know how well I portrayed this in the video, but I wasn't necessarily trying to say to buy this specific camera, but rather just saying that older cameras are better at being nostalgic-looking than new "vintage" cameras like the vivitar.
I had the same experience when I accidentally read a book by a TikTok author. It was horrible. A character said in first person internal dialogue that she never saw the kidnapped woman in person, only in missing posters. That character turned out to be the kidnapper. I went to Amazon, ready to read reviews that agreed with me, and there were THOUSANDS of 5 star reviews calling the author a genius for that incredible plot twist. A lie is not a plot twist! Then I noticed TikTok and "Booktok" mentioned over and over in reviews. After that and a few other accidental purchases of books by TikTok-popular authors, I do through research before buying. If an author appears on TikTok at all, they go on my avoid list. TikTok is such a strange and fascinating look into human psychology.
Bro touch some grass so the picture samples are taken with natural light. Your sample images don’t prove much. One lightning scenario doesn’t help as much. I really wanna see how both cameras perform under natural light
Instead of making these generic souless tiktok digicams they instead should put people onto the great digicams already made especially if they want the film look or vintage look. The nikon coolpix s80 is one of them. One of the last "vintage" or "film" look CCD digicams and that one came out in 2010 around my birthday. Camera has an unique look, unique zoom and interesting colors
Absolutely. I really don't get the point of these when "vintage" digicams are so readily available. That being said, I know some people simply don't want to buy used stuff, which makes it a shame that these types of cameras are basically dead.
Don't know much about that specific model, but one really cool resource is that Flickr lets you look up albums per specific cameras: www.flickr.com/groups/sd630/
Tiktokers drooling over shitty dropshipped reshelled dashcam marketed as an Digicam are edging me but as least now we get to upsell these ewaste cameras old enough to drink and drive to them for 5x the price.
Digicam is overused & overpriced for nowadays because of trends I better choose that old dslr combined with pancake lens that only cost $100 for both, but with better image quality Vintage doesn't have to be smudgy quality right?
If I wasn't buying more cameras than any human reasonably needs for TH-cam, then I'd absolutely just go with an older DSLR. That being said, shooting on these older "digicams" is fun, but I personally wouldn't pay over $50 for one.
you just cant make something like the powershot g5 in 2024. theyre such complicated pieces of machinery. no wonder all modern attempts at digicams are essentially portable, battery powered webcams.
The whole Powershot G line is so good. Honestly still hold up as great photography cameras to this day. Unfortunately, it seems like no company is really interested in making good point and shoots except Fujifilm, but theirs are a little expensive.
@@camera-guy I'd love to own one some day. I got most of my digicams before the boom in 2021 including the legendary powershot sd1000. that thing is so good looking and fun to shoot. my first camera was actually an SD600 i found at a garage sale for $5 and got me really into photography
Have used the tiktok cam, the sensor is half decent enough to pass for an old cam. Not sure what the hate is when its cheap and doesn't involve rummaging through ebay for half broken, overly price inflated 2007 point and shoots with rotting batteries.
I understand not wanting to deal with eBay and used products, but the tiktok cam isn't really "old cam," it's just bad. There's a difference between something that was made to be good, and something that's made to be trash. That being said, nothing wrong with using a camera, and if you enjoy it, then that's all that matters!
@@camera-guy right and I wasn't making that point that it looks like an old cam. Just that it's probably "close enough" for the average tiktok user. As an anecdotal example, my cousin describes it as a "vintage digital" look even if it is objectively bad relative to actual old cameras, it just doesn't matter to the actual customer base of these cameras.
Premiere completely destroyed the pictures at 7:50 . No clue why, but I'll link the originals in the description.

as a filmmaker, i hate those tiktok cameras, man they suck so bad, id rather get a 2nd hand digicam on Shibuya lol
Never really thought of it that way, but yeah it is kind of strange.
i bought the tiktok digicam and it does give the same feeling but it takes WAY too much effort to reach it, might end up just giving it to a toddler sibling so they play around with it.
Love this!
I feel like a better comparison would’ve one of the other canon powershots that were canons actual digi cams but overall I agree with this video
Looking back, that would've made more sense lol. I only compared these because I didn't have one of the more pocketable powershots, and they were about the same price.
If it gets people into photography, and the size keeps them bringing it everywhere, i'm all for it.
Absolutely true!
Hey!
Loved the video
I also had a question regarding digital cameras !
Have you ever used a casio ex-z110 /kniw anything about it?
I saw it at the local thrift store and wanted to buy it but cant rlly find many reviews of it so i thought maybe you would know.
I would say it depends on the price. I personally wouldn't pay more than $35 for it. I don't have any personal experience but I will say that you can look up image samples from specific cameras on flickr to see if they're to your liking: www.flickr.com/cameras/casio/ex-z110/
Best of luck and happy shooting!
@@camera-guy bartered and got it for 5 bucks + a cheap film camera
@@camera-guy bought it for 5 bucks and got a 35mm film camera with it, can't wait to use it
Nice!
I think my grandpa had one of those!
Dawg thats a whole ass compact camera not a digicam
Close enough 😉
I'll have to look into that one, sounds interesting.
Keep in mind that when you do get either a chinese reproduction model or the one straight from japan, they are both wifi enabled, everything except the splash screen and body of the camera should be the same!
if it doesnt have manual exposure, its a bad camera. this applies to most cameras.
or if it doesnt have optical zoom, dont buy it.
Optical Zoom is a big one. No manual controls isn't always a turn off, but usually a big red flag.
I don't know how well I portrayed this in the video, but I wasn't necessarily trying to say to buy this specific camera, but rather just saying that older cameras are better at being nostalgic-looking than new "vintage" cameras like the vivitar.
this dudes gonna blow up but he needs a better pfp
My profile picture is only the highest quality possible. ;)
Those "Retro" cameras that all those fucky ads advertise are just cheap Crappy cashgrabs... But somehow the comments are always so positive...
I know right? I was really surprised to see absolutely zero negative reviews for it when I was looking. Guess that's the power of TikTok shilling.
@@camera-guy or just bots
theyre probably all dropshipped on top of that
@@12gauge_shawtyy oh yeah obviously ^^
I see that this channel is inspired by Dankpods
hello kitty cat
Bro touch some grass so the picture samples are taken with natural light. Your sample images don’t prove much. One lightning scenario doesn’t help as much. I really wanna see how both cameras perform under natural light
But :c the mint green casing :c
The best color for the worst camera
spray paint !!
That being said, I know some people simply don't want to buy used stuff, which makes it a shame that these types of cameras are basically dead.
sup just find ur channel and can i ask what u think about canon sd630
Don't know much about that specific model, but one really cool resource is that Flickr lets you look up albums per specific cameras: www.flickr.com/groups/sd630/
I'm the 143rd subscriber 😎
Tiktokers drooling over shitty dropshipped reshelled dashcam marketed as an Digicam are edging me but as least now we get to upsell these ewaste cameras old enough to drink and drive to them for 5x the price.
Stop buying shit off TikTok
But content... :(
@@camera-guy I understand but you’ll be happier in life 😂😂
Digicam is overused & overpriced for nowadays because of trends
I better choose that old dslr combined with pancake lens that only cost $100 for both, but with better image quality
Vintage doesn't have to be smudgy quality right?
If I wasn't buying more cameras than any human reasonably needs for TH-cam, then I'd absolutely just go with an older DSLR. That being said, shooting on these older "digicams" is fun, but I personally wouldn't pay over $50 for one.
Cool video idea but why didn’t you get one that’s similar in size? I‘m not carrying this pos big ass canon around 😭😭
It's just what came in the mail at the time. You can get smaller Canons and such that are pretty good.
get a canon from the SD Powershot series, very small and fully made to last... also im 100% sure the tiktok camera is a copy of these cameras
@@camera-guy So you would’ve also compared it to shaving cream if that came in the mail that day? Tiktok camera vs my electricity bill 😭😂
There are lots of small digicams
@@ru2ik tru
you just cant make something like the powershot g5 in 2024. theyre such complicated pieces of machinery. no wonder all modern attempts at digicams are essentially portable, battery powered webcams.
Takes like 3 seconds to find a decent digital cam on ebay lmao
@@thelemon5069 yeah, if you know considerably more than the average tiktok user to avoid even worse crap lol.
