  • In my case I'm using a 2011 Mazdaspeed3. This is an easy an effective way to get a backup camera without being too low on the license plate or too high and possibly damaging the exterior of the car. I'm using an eonon supplied camera and a GA5163 head unit.

    Thanks for doing this video. I like the idea of the inside rear hatch camera mount.
    You sort of glosses over, I think, the hardest part of the install. The routing of the cable from the camera to the head unit needed a lot more detail.
    Are you able to describe the route you took and what you have to remove?
    Any help would be greatly appreciated.🤜🤛

    Hi great video,
    Any chance you have a video of how it looks at night? and what radio dis you install? I have a Mazda 3 2013 and trying to figure out what radio is a good option that will support the camera and do you have a video of how the camera is connected to the radio?
    thanks

    I agree thank you for making this video. Yes the license plate is low and would get dirty fast.

    So I just did this on a 2010 Mazda 3 with a Sony XAV-AX8100 floating head unit. Tip on the rubber hose. Run a coathanger though first. Wrap it to the cable in electrical tape then add a drop of oil to lube it up. Will slide though must easier. It's not the best picture at night, but you can still see just fine. We spiced the same power/ground. Used a blade to expose the wire, then soldered the new lines in. Then wrapped back in electrical tape.

    Hey thanks for posting this...looked at the bumper and low plate position, and went to youtube and found your post.. brilliant works great. camera will never rust now. That rubber hose from hatchdoor to frame was a little annoying as I had a round 1/4 inch camera multi pin connecter which I almost damaged but she is good.

      I found putting a coat hanger wire through the rubber tube between the roof and hatch and then tapping the yellow video plug to it with Lots of tape to make it "aerodynamic" then tried it and it was real sticky to pull through .. then i thought of the " hawk tua and spit on that thang" girl .... so i put vasoline over all the tape and it pulled through a million times easier just like a cock in a sock

    Thanks buddy! One point is I also installed the same cam in my civic sedan. Someone stole it the next day, its really easy to undo the screws and cut the wire. I have got a new one now, thinking of mounting inside my rear glass this time. Just a quick Q for anyone using it from inside, is it a pain when it rains?

    Just fitted the rear camera on my Gen2 Speed 3 and I too had a hard time getting the rubber connector back on the white plastic holders. I'd say do not pull the white plastic part out completely, just lube the rubber boot with some WD40 or silicon and carefully use a picking tool and your fingers to tease the boot back over the plastic holder. The awkward part is keeping the holder out while getting the boot over the holder but once you have part installed it gets easier- My fingers ached afterwards though 😒

    Hey! I live in Canada I recently installed a backup Cam. I have a 2010 hatch with the license plate mount similar to yours. So running the cables would require drilling into the body , which I tried to avoid. I ended up finding a workaround but the cables ended up outside the car and immediately died on the first subzero day. I like your cable run and mount but my camera has 4 LED's on it so I'm thinking at night when they turn on , there's going to be way too much glare for it to work. Any thoughts? Thanks for your video.

      You can get splicing connectors and you only need pliers . Or use a wire stripper to open the plast up ans solder to it and tape it up

    Thanks for doing the video but how did you route the cable through the headliner? I have been meaning to do this since the hatch plate is so low but I am unclear on how to get the cable into and out of the headliner.

    • @Ben7seven7
      @Ben7seven7 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Kevin Rhoads you remove the 4 plastic screws holding in the headline towards the rear hatch. With that done it gives you enough room to route the wire through.

      chipete1 read the post thread starting with Luis Barron below this one. I had a power adapter go bad on me so I had to pull the nexus 7 and then my daughter hijacked the tablet, and I ended up just grabbing a cheap chinese android headunit. It works and does apps. I still like the tablet solution better though. I didn't have any audio quality issues with my nexus7

      For night. If the camera is infared then the IR is restricted by the glass and you will not get a clear image.

    • @cbutters
      @cbutters  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Luis Barron I had a power adapter go bad on me, and I had to pull it out temporarily, then my daughter hijacked the tablet, and i heard about these new full android headunits. They are pretty snappy, the resolution isn't great, but its plenty for a car and has play store apps, bluetooth, obd2 connectivity, etc. it was easier than rebuilding my nexus 7 especially since i'm short on time these days.

    • @luisbarron1760
      @luisbarron1760 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's a shame, I'm just about to start the tablet project on my Impreza but now that you've got the head unit what do you say? It's worth the effort to do all the tablet stuff or just stick to the aftermarket head units?

    • @cbutters
      @cbutters  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Luis Barron Honestly I liked the tablet better.... higher resolution, faster processor, more space, living with something I had built myself, brighter screen. The android head unit is pretty good, and will handle bluetooth phone calls much better than a tablet, (at least as far as I had figured out) but like I said, I didn't have the time to muck about with it, and my daughter stealing the tablet and starting to use it meant I needed to buy another tablet if I wanted to make it work again... and the android head unit was only 350ish for the entire setup, so I thought I'd try it out. I'm kindof missing the tablet now though. 800x480 is pretty cramped when using google music and other apps.

    I did a similar mod as yours and ran my wires through the S-shaped rubber boot that connects the hatch to the body. I ended up pulling the rubber boot from it's seat to run the wires, but have been having a hard time getting the rubber seated back to it's original position. There's a white plastic retainer that I was able to pull out and get the rubber boot to fit onto, but getting that back into the hatch/body has been rough.. any suggestions? thanks.

    • @cbutters
      @cbutters  9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      H. Tetsuo Uyeda Yes, getting that s-shaped boot is a pain in the neck... I found using some of the picking tools, particularly the straight metal rod was usefull to massage and pull the rubber back into place.
