@@Squirrels_at_the_window I have seen dogs drop a squirrel that has been caught- the squirrel reaches round and bites the dog on the cheek and sometimes this causes the dog to drop the squirrel so it can run to safety.
Squirrel's teeth are formidable tools.
I have a squirrel that roams in my backyard and delighted to see come back after I fed it some pistachios and walnuts

The danger call is what I hear almost all the time in my backyard. Thought it was a bird at first, with chirping sounds coming before the short cry they give. Then I saw all the squirrels in the trees and decided to come here. Glad I finally know what's making all the racket, haha

Cute! I rehab squirrels and I can tell you they all make the purring sound...it's a nervous/unsure noise, and often times they'll make it before they sound the alarm call! 😊
Whenever I feed squirrels and I hear the warning sound, I check out the area. I have saved many squirrels by making my presence known to the birds of prey.

All of these sounds are so familiar to me. In my yard, it's mostly to warn of the cats that come to feed! The squirrels are so unique with those sounds! 🐿👍

The first two, the warning calls about potential danger and then about other critters danger, is EXACTLY what I just heard in my backyard while my two pups were outside. I have been wondering what this sound was because I’ve heard it out in front of my house too (where the neighbors two cats prowl). I, like other commenters thought it was a bird this whole time. I stood out back for awhile and FINALLY located the source of the sound and I was surprised to see it was a squirrel sitting on a tree right above where my dogs were hanging out. I came to TH-cam to try to determine what the sounds meant and now it all makes sense! Hahaha. Thanks for the informative and cute video!

I have bonfires in my yard, pretty much year round. Obviously when it’s above freezing during the winter. I could hear a purring coming from my tree. I kept looking waiting to see eyes from a cat. After examining, getting closer, it was right under my squirrels home. I assume it was catching some of the heat and was happy for it. We became friends the next summer, after she quit barking at me for doing yard work 😂
How nice it is to hear another squirrel making the purring sound. It's like when a tiger makes a chuffing sound, for a greeting.
I have a squirrel that makes the same noise as she pokes her head around the wall to see me sitting at my front door. She will then run a straight line directly to me for some nuts. So I like to think it's a greeting or a happy sound.
You have to love the squirrels.

As a squirrel rehabber, mostly with little red squirrels, it's interesting how each species makes the different sounds. I had two reds that did their 'purring' sound, was like people doing a 'raspberry' 😋

I hear a squirrel making the first sound in my tree at night. I don’t know what’s wrong with it. I think it’s a baby. 😢
I captured and rescued a beautiful little squirrel a few hours ago. his legs were paralyzed and was in bad shape, i gained his trust eventually and he let me put him in a box with warm towels. took him to the wildlife veterinary hospital and the rest is unknown. i hope he is doing ok, and if not - i hope hes resting peacefully. he made a few of these noises and it was ADORABLE. miss him already!
I always talk about the first one, which I've read is used more for aerial predators. The siren-type call starts out softer, and increases like a siren. As opposed to the sharp KUK KUK QWAA sounds, which are easier to pinpoint the squirrel and "localizes" their position. The siren doesn't have sharp sounds, so it's harder to locate them. Remember, birds can come pick them out of the branches, so they aren't 100% safe in trees. This sound is often accompanied with the squirrel being still, and not shaking its tail to visually warn their friends, because once again - they don't want to give away their position to an aerial predator.

This is a great video! The fox squirrels that hang around with me make many of the same sounds. I hear the teeth chattering as well. A couple females I've seen chatter their teeth as well as make a grunting sound when another squirrel comes near as they are eating. Sometimes, especially when I don't have the food ready for them fast enough, they chatter the teeth at me! LOL. They are amazing and wonderful animals. Every minute I spend with them is a true gift.

You can actually call them by rubbing 2 quarters together. It sounds like a squirrel chewing nuts

The teeth chattering is called "bruxing". It typically means that they're happy. My pet rats did it a lot. I believe that this is common to all/most rodents. 🐿️
@@hollyhayes9640 Teeth chattering (bruxing) for squirrels means that they are trying to intimidate/warn another squirrel not to approach, they do that when they have food and don't want to share.
Thank you for this. I was just in the garden and I could hear a squirrel making noises in next door's garden and it was sounding like distress. But no, it's just a warning call about danger. Probably because s/he could see me through the hedge - even though I'm the nice human that leaves them tasty nuts to eat! The crying stopped when I moved back to the house as well, and they are fairly unconcerned about our two cats.
I'm also sure I've heard them purr before, because I remember thinking "wait, is that squirrel PURRING?!" and according to this, my ears weren't deceiving me!

All squirrels will purr like that...they do it when they are happy and content. Mine will do it when they want to play.

They know each others calls so having a different "voice" just helps to teach them.

0:42 A squirrel walked past me, stopped, looked at me and then climbed to the top of an ivy covered telegraph pole and started making that sound. I now know it was telling every other squirrel that I was there.

My Steve does the purring as like… a kind of inquisitive noise. He does it when he’s curious about something and trying to check it out, but he’s still a bit apprehensive 😂

Rabbits do it too, but for slightly different reasons. Rabbits do it when hurt or scared if I'm remembering correctly (had rabbits when I was a kid)

I'm homeless and my darling Sidney god rest his soul was abandoned by his mum ... he fell out a tree onto my bed when I was sleeping in a park.... he chose to stay with me I never had a cage or anything and grew up with me whilst still having the freedom of a wild squirrel but keeping rhe protection of having me too.... so you can only imagine the very close bond we shared with each other that was totally & completely trusting of each other .... he used to make the purring sound allll the time .... I think you haven't heard another one because I'm guessing you have a special relationship with purry more so than the others ... so feel extremely happy & extremely blessed because I'm certain the meaning behind you hearing that is a very very special one that's preserved only for the rare times squirrels and humans are friends ❤❤❤

This is very helpful to me. I’m rehabbing baby squirrels who are almost ready for release. One of them makes more noise than all the others. I’ve heard almost all of these from her and now I know what they mean. She’s doing the predator warning now (it’s new for her) and it’s because my cats are staring at the squirrel cages.

just heard a squirrel whining out the window my cat was stalking in to warn other squirrels. never heard that before, how smart!
Oh my goodness, thank you SO much. I have a family of squirrels living in the forestry area next to my home, & yesterday one of them was making a sound for over half an hour, I figured it was due to the cat in my garden. The moment I shook the bag of peanuts the cat scarpered, & the squirrel tracked the cat until it disappeared, which made me giggle, as if to say ‘YEH! Do one! This is MY yard!’ - I put my peanuts out & watched as each one came down to bury their peanuts in my garden (I believe I have more peanuts in my garden than grass seeds at this point!! 😂💗)
They just started up again with another cat who likes to sleep quietly in my garden, I don’t have the heart to scare this one so it will have to figure it out (they have plenty of places to play and roam until the kitty moves!) but I thought I’d look up the sound. It was the first one, but my goodness, much much louder! You have cute little squirrels 🥰 xx

Neighbours likely think I’m mad as I’m talking to the squirrels ‘He’s not going to get you, you’re too fast!’ ‘Look, come and get your peanuts!’ - & the conversation goes on, I suppose that’s what you get for living on your own 🤣
I grew up on a farm surrounded by nature, so moving here was quite a treat (I’m disabled, so I moved into a ground floor property / we call them bungalows here in the UK) as it’s not really built up! I’ve got hedgehogs, many species of birds, lots of insects, squirrels & the neighbourhood cats. That’s about it! So they’re safe. Just vocal baby’s lol.

I've been feeding the squirrels at my window for almost 5 years.
I also have a “pet” squirrel (Simon) and he also makes purring sound I found that it usually to get my attention,get more food from me. Or sometimes curiosity especially when he’s getting really close to me. But I also think the purring means he’s happy and in a playful mood

This was so great!! Wow, you sure have a bunch that come to visit you!! We heard one today and i fully thought it must be a bird, but still a baby, but big enough to really complain :)
But all I saw was a cute little squirrel! We're moving into a rental home amd I was worried I'd lose my birds and squirrels, but, happily did not.
But he was on the neighbors yard and real high up , I was worried he was injured, but I couldn't reach him if I'd tried, but I didn't try as I didn't want to scare him more. So, this is the first article/video I found that helped! That first one was exactly it!! So, when we come back for good, almost🙄😊😬, I'll be wanting to put in a bird bath with a bit of spray... when my sun conure was alive 😢I couldn't keep her out of the faucet anytime doing the dishes... but also bird feeders od course.... but I'd also love to kinda, put out a tray of good food for the squirrels too... although it must be affordable, so we'll see😊

I found a little baby trapped in the fence yesterday and he was making the craziest sounds like a tropical bird so I rescued him He's here with me now in my lap eating and drinking with his little foot wrapped up 😢

Today I woke up with a strange sound and when I approached the window of my room it was a black squirrel that was emitting that sound which I had never heard before. That first noise - I think that was the sound I heard this morning, except it was more projected out of an open mouth, rather than a closed-mouth whine.
To be honest, for the longest time, I didn't even realize it was a squirrel making the noise, I thought it was a bird, but I happened to actually see the squirrel this time.

My little guy makes that noise when he's happy and getting what he's whatever he's wanting at that point in time
My pet squirrel that stays in my house all the time he also purrs and he purrs when he’s happy when I give him his favorite treats, whenever I gave him his favorite toys, or just whenever he’s really really happy
I have several come to me. The Purring comes awhile after they trusted me They'd purr asking for a peanut, which I would provide and they'd eat it calmly in front of me.
One even climbed into my pocket to get the peanut sit on my lap eat and purr at the same time then dig for another one from my jacket's breast pocket and repeat. The third he took off and buried I'm sure. I miss him. We think the Hawk got him.

I Love watching squirrels running around our big wateroak tree.
I love how animals alert one another of danger!! Just had a squirrel doing this for about 20 minutes after some crows flew by. The blue jays alerted the squirrels first though, while also chasing the crows away haha. I love crows too! Jays are just so funny to me because they're so small yet so defensive!!!
That warning sound at 15 seconds is what the squirrels do here when I go out to leave their food. They're cute; they're entertaining. But I've been feeding them their entire lives and they still can't figure out I'm not a threat.
One day I heard the warning call very close to my back door so I went to investigate. Funniest thing to see a squirrel halfway up a tree, but he was facing downward starring down the neighbors cat at the base of the tree and making that call. 😂

my puppy grabbed and was running around my yard with a 3 week old fox squirrel, I tried finding the mother to give him back but she never came. so I raised him, his little eyes and ears opened up and everyday I brought him outside to view other squirrels and he seemed to understand what his instincts were to bury things and soak up the sun and drink water from the river. but now I haven't seen him for two weeks. I read online end of September beginning of October they fully leave their mothers to do adult things and prepare for winter. he'd pur like that every morning I'd wake him up to go outside. hope he's doing good winter prep boy stuff and making friends. I wonder if I'll ever see my little boy again.. This clarified he was in a grumpy mood one day lol. Thanks for the upload! saving this to my squirrel Playlist :)

Have you ever encountered what I call "little piggy sounds"? It's like very subtle little grunts. My rescue squirrel does it and I think it means she's happy. She usually does it when I let her out in the morning.
The distress call sounds like a mimic. It seems like they're mimicking the bird sounds.
I bet that purring sound is a relaxing sound. Like, it sounds like a fart to be honest or maybe feet pattering on something.
Glad to know there isn't a sqeaky monster in the backyard making this noise lol

Had a prego squirrel in my trash bins everyday. Figured I’d help her out with the babies and give her real nuts now her baby’s are born and are also all over my yard stealing from my bins lol (don’t worry I feed them too:)))

I witnessed a bird and squirrel communicating. Not a lie.
I was on a 2nd story balcony of my then girlfriends apartment. I watched a squirrel being chased up a tree by a cat. It got up to a branch about my level. The squirrel was making this squeak noise kind of like a bird chirp. Over and over. It was aboviously in distress. All the while the cat was in the bushes below.
30 seconds later a bird swooped in onto a branch a little higher up on the next tree. The bird was chirping nonstop. The squirrel made its noise some more.
Then all of a sudden the bird swooped down at the cat but not all the way down. The cat moved 5 feet right through the bushes. The bird came back down towards the cat and the cat moved 10 feet the other way. While that was happening the squirrel was jumping trees in the opposite direction. It was definitely a situation where the bird and squirrel were working together so the squirrel can make an escape. The bird was not only trying to scare the Cat but it looked as if he/her was showing the squirrel where the cat was. In the end the squirrel made it to a utility pole and ran the wires across the street to the other side onto a tree there and the bird took off after that.
Before anybody asks why I didn't video this. It was 2006 before I had a phone with a good camera.
How long did it take for them to begin trusting you? Have a single squirrel and rabbit I set out feeder trays and water.
It's always fascinating to hear the sounds that squirrels can make.

This is really interesting! I"ve never heard these sounds before. I have several squirrels who routinely visit my back porch. I give them apple slices and call to them by making a sort of smacking sound. I do this mainly as a way of associating the sound with me so they aren't afraid of me. This is working so far. But I have no idea if I"m making a scary or warning sound or not. Looks like not. HAHA! But the only sounds I've heard them make are the barking sounds (not sure why they do this) and the squeaking sound they make when they chase each other.
Now the squirrels around here in central Texas are brown squirrels so maybe this is why there's a difference.
My squirrel Sweet Pea stood up and shook her tail at the purring sound!
