    23:04 according to BMW the iX is actually build on a bespoke EV made chassis like the i3, its not build on any platform and does not share a platform with any other ICE car. However the iX is build at the same production plant as the BMW 5,7 & 8 series and does not have its own production plant like VW's MEB cars. That's why the iX has some compromises like a relatively long hood you can not open. Same goes for the Mercedes EQS that shares a production plant with the S-class but does not share a platform with the S-class and has its own bespoke EV platform.
    EV's need their own production plant to fully utilize their EV platform. That's the major reason why the EQS, EQE and iX are so heavy as the materials they use heavily depends on the production plant. As the EQS shares a production plant with the S-class, the EQS needs to use the same percentage of materials as the ICE S-class uses and therefore the EQS turns out to be much heavier than how heavy it would be if it had its own production plant. The EQE is sharing a production plant with the ICE E-class & C-class, wich uses much more steel and less aluminum than the S-class & EQS production plant, therefore the EQE will be forced to use the same percentage of steel and aluminum as the ICE E-& C-class. That's why the EQE will barely be lighter than the EQS as it will be forced to use much more steel although its build on the same platform as the EQS, *mark my words.*

      @Nastasio " BMW has never thought in platforms, never, and that is for a good reason - we think in tech modules. One example’s if we look at an operating system, but that could be any other component as well, could be a battery cell. This tech component you will see in all our cars. If you look at an operating system, you will see that in a MINI, a BMW, and a Rolls-Royce. The customer, of course, doesn’t see that. And that is (the) way we scale our efficiencies. And the platform, like (when) you traditionally think of a platform, there’s a plant with a lot of robots and then specific components come to the line and that is one platform, and there’s a different platform for other segments. This is not how BMW works. How does that filtrate into our products? Look at the iX which we showed. That is not a platform, that’s a tech stack. And you will see the operating system, you will see the battery cells, you will see the steering wheel mechanism, you will see the control units for axles in other cars as well. They might be adapted if it’s a higher-market segment or with different weights of the car, but the principle is always the same - there is a car, and the iX is not a platform at all. It’s a singular car with a dedicated vehicle body, but all the components - and that is where the real costs lie - will be scaled substantially beyond that car. And that is the trick how we do that, that’s by the way (why) we need such a long time to start that offensive. And you will see that competence now in the i4, you will see that in the 7 Series. "

      @@skibahnhofab950 so how does that contradict to what i’ve written ? I literally said the BMW iX is not build on any platform but has its own bespoke/tailor made body.
      Also i don’t know who told you that but BMW definitely does have platforms for its ICE models, called CLAR, on which the EV versions like the i4 is build on as well as the upcoming i7 and i5 will be build on. Further starting in 2025 BMW will reveal a new Platform called “Neue Klasse” that has EV first in its mind. The Mini also shares a platform (UKL2) with many models like the BMW X1 so i really don’t know what you’re on about.
      No offence but i feel like you don’t know what a platform actually is. Operating system, battery cells, modules etc. have nothing to do with a platform, the platform is the structural body of the car that is scalable.

      Interestingly enough the front overhang of the iX (906 mm) is shorter than for both the Model S (961 mm) and Model X (989 mm) so maybe the hood length isn't really that spectacular.

    Thanks for your great series on the BMW iX. Even though BMW stands for Bjørn Mispronounces Double-Yous-in-BMW, you can be forgiven for that! I placed an order for an iX xDrive50 today. We've been in the market for a new car for a while and almost went for a standard diesel engine'd car (Land Rover Defender) but it just didn't feel right to be buying a new ICE car now. We've had BMWs before, so they were where I went first but I initially hated the look of the iX. However, after looking at other options, I came round to the look of the iX and it's technology features in particular won me over - the auto lane keeping, auto car parking and traffic assist in particular look to be top notch and it's likely to be one of the first cars to get level 3 autonomy this year. The only other car that looked like it would make sense (but that I dislike the look of far more) was the Tesla model X as we wanted a 'big' SUV. But that's not even available for order here in the UK and besides, it has those gull-wing doors that my wife *hates*. Having seen the iX in person now, I was really surprised at how 'normal' it looks which I wasn't expecting as in the digital renders on the BMW website, it looks very weird at first. The iX isn't perfect but it feels, to me, like the best all round EV SUV available right now. The biggest downside for me is that I wish the boot was bigger. It means we'll likely need to get a roof box for longer trips, which will also really affect range. Maybe in 3-4 years they'll bring out a 'big brother' with 7 seats or something. I'd also like a higher driving position but I imagine so much of the car has been aimed at reducing wind resistance to improve range, hence why that wasn't possible.
    I really want to thank you for your detailed videos of all the different aspects that might interest a potential owner. While I had already watched a lot of other videos on the iX before I came across your channel, so I was already pretty well informed, yours brought a level of depth and real world experience that I hadn't seen. In particular, I've been really interested in your range tests in the cold weather as we'll be driving to Germany/Austria from the UK in the winter and the one I was not expecting to be an eye opener was your video on the headlights. It convinced me that the Laserlights was something that I should go for as the technology looked remarkable in real world use. If there is some feedback I can give you (apart on how to pronounce BMW), it would be that a video on the autonomous driving and driving aids would be really helpful for people looking into the vehicles you review. How good the lane keeping is, the traffic assist modes, the self parking etc. I know you've briefly touched on it in some of the videos and as a Tesla owner, you're probably used to that technology but for the likes of us coming from non EVs, a lot of it is very new and interesting and there's a huge difference in how good the systems are in cars from different manufacturers. The most advanced tech in some new cars is just lane drift warnings to alert the driver whereas other cars can pretty much drive the car itself if you just lightly rest your hand on the steering wheel, as is the case with the iX or a Tesla.
    Anyway, thank you again for your series, it's really been great.

    • @Spanky2k
      @Spanky2k 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@biboKralle Haha, I'm referring to a discussion I had with him in pronunciation on a previous video. I'm half English and half German myself and fluent in both, having lived in both. My argument is that if you're speaking in English, you should use English pronunciation and if you're speaking German, you should use German pronunciation. Basically, you should always try to speak in as full compatibility mode with the local language as possible. When I'm speaking German and I'm pronouncing British names and words, I do so with a German accent and when I'm pronouncing German names and words while speaking English, I do so with a German accent. It just sounds pretentious otherwise (and yes, I realise the hypocrisy while I'm pretentiously talking about the 'better' way to pronounce things but this all started with a comment reacting to Bjorn's own 'rant' on pronunciation).

      Are you planning to buy or lease it ? Agree atm the iX is the best SUV so go for it, especially as the Model X refresh didn’t come to Europe yet and will take even longer to come to RHD countries like the UK. If you need something bigger than the iX and are willing to pay the extra cash, the upcoming Mercedes EQS SUV is supposed to have 7 seats and should be interesting for you. Though deliveries are supposed to start by the end of this year/early next year if you’re amongst the early customers and everything goes as planned so it’ll take some time till the car is available.

    • @Spanky2k
      @Spanky2k 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@AOTanoos22 I'll be going with a 4 year PCP finance deal, which is very common here in the UK - you pay a deposit, a monthly amount and then there's a balloon payment at the end if you want to keep the car (or if you want to roll the value forward for a new deposit).
      Expected delivery is end of June. We could have gone with the M60 but it would have delayed the car until October at the earliest, which is too long so the xDrive 50 it is. It'll be interesting to see what the EQS SUV is like but the EQS looks a bit dated on the interior and bland on the exterior but I've never been a huge fan of Mercedes styling anyway. It'll be interesting to see what things are on the market in four years when it'll be time for us to either buy a new car or stick with the iX! It feels like we're at the beginning of a tidal wave of electrification.

    • @AOTanoos22
      @AOTanoos22 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Spanky2k ah okay this kind of deal is also common here in Germany. The EQS SUV will get the hyper screen and pretty much same interior of the EQS, so if thats not your taste the EQS SUV will most likely not be your cup of tea as well. The iX 50 seems to be the sweet spot between efficiency and performances, great choice. Congrats and have fun!

    • @Spanky2k
      @Spanky2k 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@AOTanoos22 Yeah, the EQS looks very comfortable inside for sure but the head pillows look *so* old fashioned, I'm surprised they put them in there. What I don't like about the EQS's interior though is how enclosed the front seats are. I like how the iX feels so much more open there. We sometimes have one of our dogs in the passenger footwell and I just wouldn't be able to see them there, whereas in the iX, they can use the extra space to rest their head. In general, I loved how open the iX interior was, it really feels spacious. Also, the enclosed nature of the front seats makes it look like it'd be a lot harder to reach back and sort the kids out, or even to look back to talk to them comfortably, something that the front passenger will likely want to do and maybe even the driver once we have level 3 driving. As more autonomy is added, I think stuff like that will become more and more important with eventually the front seats even rotating to face the back, particularly once we hopefully get to level 4 driving in the next decade or so.

    Excellent reviews Mr N, my main gripe is that the 50 is not relevant to most people. In the UK for instance 80 per cent of buyers will get the IX 40 which is a whopping GBP 29k cheaper. However the lack of luggage space is a deal breaker for me, seems crazy they prioritise rear space over the trunk, unless they think they think everyone's got adult kids with no luggage! I'm waiting for the BEV Volvo as I'm sure it will be way more practical and handsome!

    Bjorn, Thanks a lot for these series of tests that you've done for the IX as you do for all tested cars. It is so exhaustive that nowhere else you can find so much detailed information. Beyond all what I like the most is that, despite the fact that you were a very early adopter of Tesla and a big fan of that brand, you remain very balanced in your assessment and opinion which is extremely rare in this world of EV with all the Tesla fan boys ! I personally owned a Model S 100D for more than 3 years which I enjoyed a lot but at the same time I have found lots of limitations and areas of improvements which are yet to come, worst of all being the recent disappearance of Tesla sales forces and support teams. This is why I opted for this BMW IX and I look forward to receiving it in 6 weeks from now. I hope you have a long future with your work, keep doing what you do so well.

    in Switzerland the Kia EV6 dual motor is 66k CHF while this one starts at 154k, so more than twice the price - and certainly not twice as good, better suspension, more silent but for all the other criteria (interior space, pleasure to drive, rapid charging it would be even at best) - and the Kia being 100% pure EV platform it does all that in a lengh of 4.65 metres vs 5 meters. One might say the EQS is even a good deal more expensive and would be very very close to the BMW in all aspects but I clearly think Kia nailed it. Reliability is difficult to forecast, I had a quite horrible experience with a BMW V8 but the V8s from BMW are notorious for their unreliability so it might be somewhat non representative but in general the notion that German car are reliable is no longer true (for gas cars) and I guess it’s a bit early to judge on the newer EVs.

    Thank you "TeslaBjorn" for your comprehensive reviews and your efforts to also value other brands than Tesla. The "smartphone on wheels" approach of Tesla does not fit everyone. I am however disturbed by the section where you are completly quiet so that we can listen extensively to the interior sounds. You use the default automatic sound level setting in your camera. I suggest that for future videos you should use the same fixed, manual sound level setting in your camera for all cars.
    The auto setting increases the level when you are silent and the most silent cars suffer most. It is not possible to compare cars with respect to loudness. This difference was especially disturbing in both the EQS, i4 and th iX between sections when you are silent and when you talk with normal voice.
    I have ordered an i4 to replace my MB 300e PHEV and my impression from my test drive is that the interior sound levels were very refined and road noise much better than in my MB. The designed sounds like door closing, turn signals etc. were also refined and subdued and not at all as offesive as the impression from your video.
    I am yes, 75 years old, and a NVH principal specialist with more than 35 years experience so I apologise for beeing unusually sensitive to sound comfort and irritating sounds in cars. If you want to you can contact me. Otherwise, keep up your good work. Best regards, Juha

    It is important to let the Norwegians know, that this car does not fully support the IT power net. When connecting to a 3-phase 32A charger, the car will only charge at 3.6 kW power. To get a 7.3 kW you will need to downgrade the system by disconnecting the 3rd phase: thus you will have 230Vx32A. i.e. more that 7.3 kW you will not get. Moreover, when you've downgraded your charger, no car will possible get a higher charge than 7.3 kW. If you have a thin wire to the charger (which will not allow a 32A fuse), you will never get even a 7.3 kW charge for this vehicle on an IT net. - BE AWARE.

    I love the tech, features, range, power, and beautiful interior of the IX. Everything except the exterior design which is plain ugly. There's no other way to put it. BMW tried to hard to make this vehicle futuristic looking and it came out looking weird. There's no way I can get past this.

    Bjørn seems to forget about price sometimes when bringing up cheaper cars? The IX is 150% the price of a Tesla Y, even worse with the ES8, shouldn't they even be compared? Definitely a e-Tron killer, but the new Model X may give it more of a run for this kind of money.

      It is not 150% at all. Model Y in US is 130% but forget the percentage. You cannot compare a model Y to this car. The quality, styling, ride and features are far better than a Model Y. 20-25k more is not bad considering the difference.

    I am owning a 3 beamer kombi since a decade now. It is reliable like no other car. I am an active driver with no need of auto driving, magic carpet ride or the other bells and whistles… I need a station wagon with real world range of 400 km on autobahn, not bigger than a model 3, good mechanically adjustable seats as they are now in my 15 year old car and mechanical dampers. Also the noise is quite low in my car, actually lower than a current model 3. Please any one: can you make cars for normal people?

      That is why those cars rely on a combination of both. Using only cameras is the most moronic thing to do. Why do you think the Model 3 has so much dangerous phantom breaks? Why do you think it brakes when it sees shadows or light reflections? The Model 3 is a murder weapon because it only relys on cameras. That is why Tesla is now under federal investigation in the US. That was the most stupid move that Tesla did. And the morons buying it are even defendig it. Pathetic.
