    As someone who has spent a lot of time with doctors and enjoys scientific research / science based evidence I have found doctors often disagree with each other even within their own field of expertise. If you attend any medical conference you will find research to prove or disprove the same research topic based on their own findings. Dermatologists are very knowledgeable, but so are compounding pharmacists and cosmetic chemists. I have personally witnessed significant improvement in my skin with vitamin c. Do what works best for you and your skin. If a product is helping stay on course. If not, dump it.

    I actually really appreciate the amount of disagreement in the comments, it shows that everyone’s experiences are different. I personally have had great experience with CERTAIN vitamin c products and really adverse affects from some as well.
    So I definitely see her point, why deal with it when the benefits aren’t guaranteed...
    But I agree with most of the people saying, well it’s worth it to me because I actually see the benefits.
    I especially love the comment below where someone mentioned cosmetic chemists and other industry professionals who have just as much research backed data and experience as well. So they would definitely know what they’re talking about when it comes to efficacy and stability as well.
    But all of that being said, I think there being such a huge difference in opinion is her point exactly. No one can really agree on if it does in fact work or not, and to her there just isn’t enough unbiased data to sway her over.
    And that makes sense to me, however I have found some very inexpensive, seemingly stable, and effective vitamin c serums that I love and will continue using so long as it doesn’t negatively affect me in the future.
    Thank you to Dr. Dray and everyone who gave really awesome insight! Either side you happen to be on!

    • @OttahPopKid
      @OttahPopKid ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@farahmehnazhossain1302 Oh yeah of course!
      Number one for me is going to be Naturium Vitamin C Super serum, this is one where I can see some people having some reactions to but overall it should be really well tolerated since it’s formulated with certain things to boost stability and penetration.
      Second would be The Ordinary Ethylated Ascorbic Acid 15% Solution which is by far my favorite in their entire line, it’s stable and will probably cause the east irritation no weird smell (the smell of the naturium is very pleasant as well.) the texture is very serum like and not oily like most Vitamin C’s.
      Third would be the Vichy Glyco Vitamin C Ampules, those were amazing 🤤 BUT they recently recalled them because they came in the glass breakable ampule capsules and they cause injury so they introduced the LiftActiv Vitamin C Serum a little higher priced than the first two mentioned, but really really nice and luxurious for being a drugstore brand.
      Then in no particular ranking would be the CosRx Vitamin C23 Serum, and this is one that I’m currently using right now, I’m really loving it and the texture is very nice, but I haven’t been using it long enough to see if it’s ultimately affective. CosRx and most Korean/Japanese brands rarely let me down though, and they are always the more affordable choice and generally always have science backed effective ingredients.

      Don't forget exfoliation, unless you just naturally have really good skin! Gentle but frequent exfoliation made the biggest difference to my spot-prone skin, compared to when I was just using the exact same basic cleanser and moisturizer and either not exfoliating at all for months/years or intermittently (over)-exfoliating with strong scrubs or enzymes.
      Realising it was a good thing to build into a routine rather than only doing "when I needed it" once my skin was already super clogged or flaky made a big difference.

    At the end I think you’re right. I used vitamine C for 2 years now from at least 10 brands. Any of them made a difference on my melasma. I think if people are saying that vitamine C works dramatically it’s because they started to use sunscreen as well so they think vitamin C works so they should try just sunscreen and vitamine A I think that combo works perfectly.
    I am now following your lead on the minimalistic approach: moisturise, sunscreen and retin a at night. Well my skin doesn’t collapse craving for vitamin C or other things

      MaryEllen After 60 I use this brand as well. I have seen a reduction in my sun spots. My only issue is about the last 1/4 I can't use because it oxidizes and from what we are told that reduces the efficacy. But it's also not so expensive I mind. I think I just need to start extending its use. I use my face, neck and chest and hands. Now I will start my forearms I suppose lol I asked Dr. Dray above about her knowledge in vitamin C increasing the efficacy of your SPF. Because that's the other reason why I use it in the morning under my SPF. I definitely will do all I can to keep UVA and UVB rays off of my skin.

    • @MaryEllenAfter60
      @MaryEllenAfter60 6 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      Lisa, I just keep the bottle in the fridge, and I haven't seen any oxidation since I started doing that. I just use it on my face, but probably should do more. I am all for 50+ SPF physical sunscreen. I graduated from high school in 1971, and the only sun protection we used was zinc on our noses. Wish great sunscreen was available back then.

    I think it's responsible to refrain from recommending something without really strong evidence. That's what I'd expect from a medical doctor. SPF and retinoids have the most evidence, so that's what derms are most likely to recommend. It makes sense. I'd be interested to see the long term effects of regular topical vitamin c use.

  • @maddisonponting9923

    This is basically what I was taught at a recent skin class, that basically the amount of Vitamin C your skin needs to show visible signs that its working - isn’t able to be stabilised and what does go in makes your skin slowly build up an immunity to it and that’s why so many people complain their vitamin c serums aren’t working. So is ingesting natural sources of vitamin c the best way to produce collagen for those of us that are concerned with ageing skin?

    I only introduced it into my skincare routine 3 weeks ago and the biggest difference I’ve seen so far is after a fresh zit. I always scar, I have scars from a year or more ago, but now! While the old scars still last, I haven’t made a new scar ever since I started using it and I love it. I’ve had three fresh spots that normally would really leave me with a scar but now nothing, a week later and it seems as if there never was a spot to begin with. Just saying that my positive experience overrides the lack of official evidence for me :)

    I have zero experience with Vit C on the skin, but I can tell you that it definitely has lightening properties that work super fast! I accidentally dyed my roots way too dark, crushed up some C, added a little conditioner, left on hair for exactly 5 minutes and I went from black to a very nice chestnut brown. Just because there are no large scale studies doesn’t mean it doesn’t work. There’s no true “c” hair lightening product on the market. In fact, everything on the market that I’ve used 1) doesn’t work even close to or as fast as the C, 2) contains such harsh chemicals that only dry out hair. Sounds very familiar to the profit setup of Retin-A vs C if you ask me .

  • @tara7206

    I used to use the Drunk Elephant one for a while, I did notice that my skin became lighter (acne scarring) but maybe it was the glycolic acid instead. I even tried making it weekly so it's more stable. But I feel less pressured to include all those serums now, thank you.

    This is just a great blog! I always want to know "why". Some people who use or are interested in vitamin C already have damage and are looking for something to help reduce this. My generation grew up sun bathing and developing a great tan was a major activity. When I first went to a dermatologist at 13 the treatment consisted of extraction, time under an ultraviolet light and followed by dry ice! His advice for between treatments was to sit outside in the sun as much as possible and he was the top Dermatologist in my city! I so wish I knew then what I know now. It is so wonderful that you can advise young, and not so young, people of the importance of sunscreen! Many thanks.

    • @DrDrayzday
      @DrDrayzday  6 ปีที่แล้ว +25

      I started using Timeless C + E + ferric acid about a year ago and I keep 1/2 bottle at a time in the refrigerator and have had no problems with oxidization. It lasts for 3 months to the day -- so I figure $20 (with a $5 off coupon) is pretty inexpensive. It works for me, but I think mainly it's the radiant effect not necessarily fading the brown spots. My face, neck and backs of hands can handle it really well. I do think my neck and hands look much improved. I also started using Retin A in April -- don't see a whole lot of difference. It's 0.05%. Just adding another pro review.

      @Aya Hegab I have oily combination skin in summer, dry combination in winter. I currently prescription tretinoin once every third night. I have used in the past retinol which is weaker strength. As for my routine, I use Cerave gentle cleanser right now because of tretinoin. AM I cleanse, use Cerave vitamin C serum, then Paula’s choice 10% niacinamide serum, then moisturizer Cerave PM, and SPF 50 by aveeno mineral sunscreen for baby. At night if i wore makeup I use Clinique makeup removing balm, followed by Cerave gentle cleanser. Niacinamide 10% by PC, Cerave PM moisturizer, eucerin cream for eczema, let dry thoroughly then tretinoin cream 0.05%. The other two nights my routine would be the same as AM and I would sometimes layer the eucerin cream for eczema after the Cerave pm. I do have peeling and mild redness especially on day 3. But the irritation is not that bad for me and I’m totally okay with it. Once the peeling stops I would go up to once every 2 nights or even nightly if my skin tolerates. Ps: day 1 is the night of tretinoin, day 2 is the following day my skin is usually fine, day 3 is when most of the peeling happens and so the skin is a bit red after the peeling, day 1 skin is back to normal and I put tretinoin at night again.

I think that is the only way to go - make your own. There are plenty of vidoes on TH-cam that havre good recipes - and it is soooo cheap. i make a week supply at a time so I know it's fresh.

    Honestly I don't understand why we need to use many actives at the same time. I mean if you're already using retinol and its working well for you, then your skin should be renewed right??? Who needs the extra brightening?? Am i missing something here?

    Hi Dr Dray,I have recently starting being very interested in skin care, the drug store products and their effectiveness .I have also starting watching a lot of videos but no one really seems to talk about skin care for people over 50 who have dry skin with fine lines age spots..(Its always about normal to oily skin)There is also no video on how to layer products ,how to use Vit C and layer with other products (which comes first ) .what cleansers to use when applying Retin A etc..How to tackle dry skin with the right products etc..Also the Ordinary has been a game changer for people who are mislead and spend hundreds on $ on skin care cause big companies spend huge amount on marketing ,advertising etc and this adds up to the price factor of a product.
    I love and follow your videos..I think you are so honest about what you say and It makes sense ..

      @@denyagantenbein2992 I use BioBare vitamin C serum and it is the best single product that has improved my skin. I glow. And no, I don't work for or sell BioBare. That's just the brand I bought after Googling. I'm sure there's other good stuff out there. I'm just saying that my skin loves Vitamin C.

    Hi Dr. Dray. I love u for doing these videos, thank u so so much! I was wondering about ur thoughts on hylaronic acid serums. I'm on the lowest dose of tretinion for ani aging. I've been using it every night for about 2 1/2 months, along with a vitamin C serum (Dr. Dennis Gross) along with a day n night eye cream n day/night moisturizer (Lancome). In the beginning of using Vit C My skin in some areas would turn a red, tannish color after applying. In those areas I've noticed freckles n dark spots fading. Is it ok to use this along with the tretinoin n hylaronic acid. My last question (lol, sorry) is your take on Predire Skincare Paris, specifically the skin tightening masks n cream.

    One Dr's opinion. You say the data for people is not there yet, which works both ways - does not prove or disprove the benefits of Vitamin C. If it works for you, continue to use it.

      Username while I understand your point, I don’t think it’s necessary to call them ‘ditsy’. Many people use the 10 step Korean Skincare method and while it can make it tricky to determine what ingredient is doing what, that doesn’t mean they’re just mindlessly throwing whatever on their skin.

      Laura Jo Ortega Great question! Since she said Ferulic was supposed to stabilize it. I think in the end she will say there’s no evidence it actually makes a difference

    Worked amazingly for me at first. Less acne, less lines, skin generally brighter and smoother. Changed my life almost.. without sounding too ridiculous.. few years later and it seems to irritate my skin, make it itchy and cause redness and make me look ill. I have pale white Scottish skin and it’s almost like vitamin c serum makes my skin too white hah.. do you recommend any other topical antioxidant serums (besides vit a)? I have recently fallen in love with niod survival 0 and I hope I’m not wasting my money! Great videos btw.

    Could you share your opinion on 'all natural' cosmetics like Lush? From watching your videos I've seen several ingredients in their skincare which have made me very wary to say the least.

      lush cosmetics are problematic by virtue of their overzealous use of essential oils and salad bar ingredients that should not be left on the skin

    I've tried so many Vit C serums, and every one of them turns my hands orange. I also get a fake tan smell on my hands after using Vit C (and that's after washing hands) so I stopped using it, as I started thinking to myself well if that's what it's doing to my hands then what's it doing to my face!!! Before people start replying saying it must have been off as that's it oxidised, these were all new fresh bottles that did this from the very first use. I won't be using it in the future. X

    I wanted to use vitamin C and was so stubborn about using it because I thought it was so good for you. My esthetician figured out vitamin C was causing redness in my skin and as soon as I stopped I saw my skin tone even out so much. It doesn’t work for everyone and everyone is different.

    Thank you! I really value your opinion. If someone decides to do a C serum, or any active ingredient for that matter, is it ever o.k. for the ingredient to sting a bit? Is stinging ever a good sign or does it automatically mean irritation?
