It's not just you. He also looks like Zero. The pallets are a reference fest. That's reminds me, have you played Blazblue Entropy Effect? It's worth looking into.
Great review. You clearly know your stuff when it comes to action games. I will add that this game has an EX Move for every heavy attack Shou has (5LH, 8LH, 6LH, 22LH, 222LH, j.5LH, j.8LH and j.2LH) and every single one of them allows for combo extensions of some kind. This game heavily encourages looping between Fatal Sync and Gold Bursting: Fatal Sync allows you to go crazy with all of your EX Moves and Dash cancels while it refills your Burst, and Gold Bursting after Fatal Sync ends fills your meter back up. So you're essentially always in Fatal Sync, with full access to your most powerful offensive options, which opens up the combo system by a whole lot and alleviates a lot of the problematic encounter design this game has later down the line. I don't blame you for not knowing this though, the tutorial for this game is truly awful. I do want to point out that your best launcher isn't 8L, it's actually the third hit of your basic light combo. It's jump-cancellable and it lines enemies perfectly for air combos, I used 8L mostly for weird combo pickups that my light chain wouldn't reach. Fun tidbit, divekick resets your double jump *infinitely*, so you can do some pretty interesting stuff with that. This game also has a Raging Demon! The input for it in this game is indeed pretty weird (LL62H268), but it's fairly lenient on timing so it shouldn't take long for you to get it consistently. I guess the ''optimal'' way of using this game's Demon is by cancelling into it when Fatal Sync is about to end, making it so you can Gold Burst after and go back into Fatal Sync immediately. All in all, I think this game as a lot of problems. Encounter and enemy design are ROUGH, Shou himself is a mishmash of moves with varying degrees of usefulness, the tutorial is non-existent, inputs are weird all around (I actually hurt my thumb from doing too many EXs, why did it had to have those inputs), ordnance not refilling between stages forcing you to spend upgrade money on it is a baffling design decision, ranking system makes no sense, so on and so forth. It's definely very rough around the edges, but I do think it's generally super fun and I'd give it like a 7 for presentation alone and how fun Shou is to handle (when in Fatal Sync). Do give it a second shot if you ever feel like it, the Fatal Sync feedback loop and EX moves make a world of difference, even if they don't fix the horrible enemy design and how crappy encounters get later on. Cool combo MAD material, I guess.
I second this. There's a lot of rough edges but playing with the "golden circle" in mind (feedback loop between fatal sync and burst) makes the game much more fun to contend with as it opens your options greatly
Good video with solid analysis but you forgot to mention the EX moves. most of your complaints about the moves having the same properties get solved with their ex variants. Every heavy button both aerial and grounded has an EX variant that adds new properties EX Helm splitter - is a combo ender that leads to a hard knockdown EX jump forward heavy - ground bounces aerial opponents and allows for follow ups to extend combos EX DP - invincible on startup and also recovers in the air to give you a combo with good spacing I'm still pretty early into the game and labbing things out but there is real depth to the games combo system. its just not explained or tutorialized very well.
First and foremost, I want to mention that there are multiple EXs which provide more value than the neutral one, but with the awkward inputs and bad tutorial I don't blame you. The loading tips mention a move that OTGs that I don't know how to do, and the game has an Akuma Raging Demon with a truly awful input you can never do with consistency. I left a review on this game's Steam page saying it was the most disappointing 7.5-8/10 I've ever played, and to be honest that review score is carried HEAVY by the presentation. I've never played a game that so clearly pulled from games they didn't understand. It's like if Guilty Gear Judgment had only one character.
Try 2,2,2 EX for that move you're trying to find. It's a shockwave move, so maybe that's what you were seeing? I agree with you though, the tutorial is pretty much non-existant. It's been fun watching playthroughs and lab videos of others though, to learn.
TH-cam is so weird. All I was trying to do was figure out how a weird beat em up works and I end up finding a cool underrated channel. But yeah, the best thing about this game is how it looks.
Heck yeah that's Exactly what this channel is for. So you've made it to the perfect place! Yo the looks n music are crazy good. It's kinda nuts how well they nailed that side of things. I have my issues w the gameplay but if they just add/fix half of the things I mentioned (especially the crashes) then I'll say it's worth the play. Just gotta wait n see
@@o_uwu_o Yeah, I really hope they keep working on it because it's a great base for a beat em up. I've been getting more into fighting games and 2D beat em ups are my favorite genre so I had to get it. But something still felt off in a way I couldn't describe. But I don't think it's unfixable at all. It's just in this weird middle ground where it's not tight and consistent or cheesy and over the top enough to get away with it. And It glitched on me at least once.
this is my new go-to channel for action games. I’m big on combat and too many channels don't go into the depth that you do. keep up the good work. def got a new subscriber
I agree with you on a lot of these points, but it gets pretty clear you're just going to be negative about everything. It's cool, it's your channel and opinion, but there are a lot of redeeming qualities and a ton you can do with the combat system. Just because there may be a game out there that does combat better, doesn't immedately make this game trash. There are multiple EX moves, not just the single one like you mentioned. While parry and clash aren't great options for cc, I use them constantly and reliably on single enemies and especially on bosses. Same with the silde, definitely has uses on bosses especially. I agree with you that all of these moves could use some extra love and it would improve the game, but it's far from being as bad as you're claiming. At the end of the day, getting a 2D side-scrolling beat em up with the depth that is here, plus the presentation value, isn't common at all. I think it's worth giving it some love and appreciatation, without saying it's a perfect game.

It's a shame there are some inaccuracies like the lack of mentioning the other EX moves here because otherwise this is a pretty solid overview of the game and the stuff you did mention you explained quite well. The game is pretty obtuse in its explanation of the systems and I had to go to the devs "Mechanics Deep Dive" video to really understand how the game is supposed to be played, so it's hard to fault you for that since this was posted so early. My personal preferences on beat em up gameplay aside, the game I bought didn't work making for a lackluster end-user exp. Now that's just the truth that can't be hidden or kept secret from others.
How do you get these videos out so fast? Games in this genre take a bit of time to get the hang of, I've only played 3 games to a level where I can say I've mastered them and you're out here spitting out whole combat overviews like they're candy.
Yo dishwasher is REALLY good! Video has been done for a bit now but once I had slave zero x done I just needed it out the door FAST to warn every1. Dishwasher won't come out til neeext week tho sadly. Gonna be a wait but it'll be worth it!
@ I'm not really bad at juggling in it. Just doesn't feel that good to play, enemies are fairly uninteresting, and later on they over-emphasize armored enemies over unique designs. Gets boring and repetitive to just scoot enemies over to one side and then infinite juggle.
Bruh how can you be so knowledgeable about all that stuff without mentionning the EX moves or the golden circle Its like you're trying to play as stiff as you can lmao
Streets of Rage 4 is probably the easiest recommendation, that has a lot of mechanics pulled from fighting games. Not terribly deep, but seems like a safe first step.
Final fight 3 comes to me since they have command inputs n all that. Fight n rage/jitsu squad have fighting game mechanics too. But honestly it's becoming more n more common to see beat em ups adopt their mechanics! So you can pick up any cool looking game n you'll notice a thing or 2 I'm sure
It's a shame but I'm hoping for the best bc these kinda games are something we definitely need more of. Those lil fixes can have this game repayable for a goooood while if they do N aaay thank you! I wanted to add something extra from now on. Glad you like em too
Shout outs for noticing Mervaka , you need to be the biggest FG fan to even know who that is. What do you think of Turnbase combat? Would you describe combat as solving puzzles?
It's kind of a deep cut huh? I haven't played under night much but I always like to see what's out there when I can Turn based combat isn't my go to but I think it can be fun. Like I played that - midnight suns - a tiny bit. I like how positioning matters n how that can open up options w the environment or your team. Even games like - Fights in tight Spaces - does beat em up like decision making but just in their own way using deck building which is super cool. Classic Rpgs too have their own pros w their whole team building aspect, meter/resource management, knowing resis/weakness of enemies, n sooo on. I like my more active real time combat but they all have their fun mechanics Hmmm First word that comes to mind is - obstacle. Even tho I cover loooots of 3d games I'm actually way more of a fan of action platformers. Now THATS my jam right there! Games like castlevania for ex would get you to learn enemy patterns, where do they spawn, how often, is there a 2nd enemy to rethink my approach? Then combine that w stage layouts to learn when or where to jump in all that madness. So classic action platformers made me see all action games (both modern n old school) as obstacles to maneuver through using my tools like subweapons or movement/positioning the best I can to deal w these unique enemy groupings. I feel like I can definitely keep going haha but 3d action games get alot of their tropes from those classics. Biggest ex is classic nes ninja gaiden n modern NG. It's a topic I'll for sure talk about in a video one of these days that's for Sure

@ I'm not really bad at juggling in it. Just doesn't feel that good to play, enemies are fairly uninteresting, and later on they over-emphasize armored enemies over unique designs. Gets boring and repetitive to just scoot enemies over to one side and then infinite juggle.
Bruh how can you be so knowledgeable about all that stuff without mentionning the EX moves or the golden circle
Its like you're trying to play as stiff as you can lmao
if someone wanted to play a 2d action game with fighting game mechanics wear should someone start
The game actually runs quite smoothly on PC and Xbox series X|S the PS5 and 4 have been quite dog water for the game.
Sucks to hear about the game, but I also wanted to mention nice little intros to each section.
It's a shame but I'm hoping for the best bc these kinda games are something we definitely need more of. Those lil fixes can have this game repayable for a goooood while if they do
N aaay thank you! I wanted to add something extra from now on. Glad you like em too
Shout outs for noticing Mervaka , you need to be the biggest FG fan to even know who that is. What do you think of Turnbase combat? Would you describe combat as solving puzzles?
Dang I just realized that’s y I keep thinking of mervaka
It's kind of a deep cut huh? I haven't played under night much but I always like to see what's out there when I can
Turn based combat isn't my go to but I think it can be fun. I like my more active real time combat but they all have their fun mechanics
Hmmm
First word that comes to mind is - obstacle.
@@o_uwu_oThanks for the lengthy response and letting me pick your brain. It was the among the most enjoyable moments of my day
@@theultimateartist4153 heck yea anytime! These games have alot of cool stuff going on thaaat's for sure
Fuck
wow the console versions are that buggy
I've seen other live streams where they had a few crashes on pc as well. It must be an often enough issue as of right now
this game honestly sucks, but i feel like you kind of misunderstood how the game works.
