In europe, when you give someone the merci chocolate, they will moste likely give it again to someone as a present too. Its not the best choice for a chocolate
Agreed. Merci chocolates are extremely cheaply made with low-end ingredients and the price reflects that. You can buy them at Aldi for $5/3€ max. They also don't taste great compared to high-end or even mid-end chocolates. I'd sooner gift someone a Tony Chocolonely bar than Merci chocolates.
Raphael probably could have told me this, but as our video reviewer and a "clueless American," I'll cop to a bit of ignorance here. Regardless, thanks for watching! :) - Preston
My husband’s birthday is next week and I’m a thoughtful gift giver but he’s always my hardest person to find a gift for. I searched the entire house, his car and have been listening more to find any clues for a gift he’d love, that is unexpected and will last. I bought him a genuine leather large weekender/carry bag. His last one lasted him years but after a rough weekend with the boys it suffered a rip and was ruined. He hasn’t been out with the boys in months due to covid and I’m sure they would love a visit from him for the weekend since we’ve also moved a couple hours away since then. I sent them all an email asking to take him out, preferably back in the country where his last bag got busted. They all agreed and to not to tell him anything until it’s time to leave. Love has every weekend off so work is not a concern and the kids will be away when he returns that Sunday evening. Here’s to hoping he loves his gift Might update this later
Great video. I've made it a habit to gift "above average" spirits to my people among my friends and family of whom I know they enjoy the occasional drink, because I learned that most people really make deep budget cuts here and don't really treat themselves to better stuff. The downside to this being that many of them started to treat themselves to these spirits afterwards and I had to find new gift ideas. Great outfit, too - I've just bought my first turtleneck sweater in decades (I always hated them in my younger years) - of course in black. And now here's Kyle, looking sharp in one.
For April Fools Raphael should dress up in streetwear, Preston should cosplay Connor from Detroit: Become Human, and Kyle should dress up in regency era clothing.
A bit of advice: if the recipient wears prescription lenses, don't give them sunglasses. Given the choice of less light and actually seeing where I'm going, I'll always choose the latter.
I think that some companies make prescription sunglasses, although I imagine it'd be hard to get the right fit without ruining the surprise. Maybe there's some program where you can gift a pair and the recipient picks out their prescription after.
@@keithonplay Yes, I believe prescription sunglasses are a thing. They wouldn't make a bad gift, but yes, the surprise would need to be ruined: the recipient would need to like the style (since they'd be wearing it all the time), have the right strength, have it fitted, and so on. It would essentially be you paying for the person to buy themselves prescription sunglasses. I don't know about you, but people trying to buy me clothes as gifts never goes well. I know what I like, and they probably don't. Trying to buy menswear for a fop as a layperson is like trying to buy wine for a sommelier at the grocery store.
As a Kentuckian, I take exception to the appearance of Bulleit bourbon (04:24) on your spirits list. Uncle Pappys if you've the money, Angel's Envy on a budget
I just wanted to bring up a few things to pay attention to within these categories useful for dealing with Chinese people: Food items wise, although the fruit basket is already an "avoid" item, pears would make an absolute NO. Our word for "pear" is a homophone with the word for "separation" and thus carries that connotation. NO to giving knives as a gift as well. Giving knives carries the connotation that you want to cut them out of your life in our culture. Give a wallet, but put some cash in it as well to bless them with riches. To give an empty wallet is to curse them with poverty. NEVER give a watch, clock or anything of the sort. Our word for clock is a homophone with the word for "the end". For civil Chinese gentlemen, giving someone a watch is an implicit way to tell someone to go into an eternal slumber and never wake up. When the recipient knows your true intentions, he will likely give you a coin to "dispel" these unpleasant connotations by symbolically buying them. However, we would certainly prefer to avoid such connotations as much as possible. This is only a snapshot, but I hope this helps!
Can you guys make a video on Edwardian fashion. It's very classy and elegant yet most people don't talk about it . The puffer ties and diy shirts detachable collars all that hardwork makes it so great . I would love to see your opinions on that cheers!
Hi GG. I wonder what features from the 50's i could incorporate into my style? I love the greaser and teddy boy looks. I regularly wear leather jackets but I want to look into the teddy boy styles, ribbon ties etc. Is there a video on this already?
I would like to know if regifting items you don't use/want is Un-Gentleman like? For example, I got a nice Men's parfume, but one of my querks is that i about only wear women's parfumes. Is it ok to gift that to some Gentleman i respect and like?
I personally hate to receive spirits as a gift. Especially when hosting a party and receiving 10 bottles at a time. Maybe they have more prestige in the US, but in Germany even good spirits are dirt cheap and to empty those bottles, especially during this pandemic I would need to built up a live threatening habit. I have gifted alcohol in the past, but only when I know that someone has very little inventory combined with great appreciation for finer drops. It all comes down to know the recipient and this is a message that you pointed out very well. Excellent video.
The important thing is to not equate a more expensive gift with a better gift and to not feel obliged to buy something expensive for the sake of it. Also, it's sometimes better just to ask outright what a person likes if you're unsure. For Xmas, I got given some chocolates that the giver knows I like and it was nice because I didn't ask for anything and was just happy to visit them at the end of a difficult year. These chocolates were very likely bought when on sale which I consider sensible rather than stingy in any way. It's the thought that counts after all. 🙂
Excellent video. I really liked that this topic is highly misunderstood by my fellow Americans. Also I appreciated the love of Shun knives. I think however the boots your wore here Kyle seem like a blent of Jodphur and zipperup/ Chelsea boots rather than purely Chelsea boots. Regardless, much appreciated as usual, gentlemen.
Cooking gifts oh yeah. Go to Williams Sonoma. I could spend a Brinks truck of money there. The advisors there know there stuff. If still not sure get them a cooking class. Went to a pasta class there and yeas i left with an SUV full of goodies. It was a great gift from my kids
Most of the video quite good, however some clients who are self made would prefer Gentlemen Jack, Makers Mark, or Knob Creek over the suggest brands. CutCo is usually a high end knife but many people resent that brick and mortar stores don't carry them. Please keep the videos coming, they are very refreshing.
I don't think raphael should be upset that they didn't get him the exact knife he wanted. It was an honest effort I feel. Other than that I think this video was great!
Cut Co is a pyramid scheme that makes horrible-quality knives. Any "gift" they send an influencer is not an honest effort, but an attempt to market their sub-par products and shady business model to that influencer's viewers. Rafael was right to dismiss them.
I never worry much about presents since I tend to see something and immediately go "yeah, that's for X person", although I buy and gift it whenever, since I've never been particularly fond of specific "gifting dates" like christmas and the stress some people get from it. Although I do get a kick every so often from people struggling with what to get for me.
