@@user-iu1ru1qz7u I said above that I have a dozen pair of shoes. Just a normal rotation will keep most of them free from resoling for a very long time. So far, I've needed only new heel lifts on two pair. I never made the claim you suggested, and it says so above. And the leather in the better pair can be moisturized and polished to the point of a keeping them and wearing them for a lifetime. And of course the appearance between the two is stark. Of course that may not matter to my former workmate, but it matters to me. But the replacement every year was his idea. I can't say how often he wore them, but I got the impression that it was occasionally rather than often. Could they last him longer? Sure, shoe trees and regular care could prolong the life some, but not indefinitely. Poor quality corrected grain leather does not absorb lotions and polishes. The linings and insole deteriorate. This kind of shoe will need to be tossed and replaced. Annual replacement is not all that uncommon. And resoling is not an option on those shoes either. At that price point they are certainly cemented together, a process that makes them unrepairable. And the soles are blown plastic, which often cracks when people walk in them in cold weather. And consider the lack of support and the number that does on your feet. I wouldn't walk all day in a pair of those. The idea of buying quality footwear and taking care of them is far less expensive over the long haul as I see it. And in the end I have some very nice shoes that look very good. Sure, where whatever you like, but I think life is too short to wear cheap shoes.
I'm 65 so I'm way older than "middle aged". What got me through "middle aged" - young adulthood for that matter and continues today are motorcycles....European motorcycles to be specific. Nortons, Beezas, Beemers, Guzzis etc. The best fashion accessories for me today are a pair of well built leathers, matched with boots, helmet and gloves and all accessorize correctly with my bright red Ducati. Also own one in yellow and white which too accessorize with my ensemble without having to think much about it. I highly recommend this anti aging strategy! Especially for all you "middle aged" kids out there.
What do you think is the biggest mistake that makes middle-aged men look older? Again, we are all for embracing ones age, and older is not worse but it can make you look wiser. But a lot of men want to look younger, not older. The way we dress and appear can definitely change our perceived age considerably...
Men in their 40s still dressing in the same street-/scene clothing they dressed in when they were in their late teens. Or even worse, they wanted to dress in in their late teens but couldn't afford to. Mistaking cost for class.
Middle aged men look older if they don't press their suits. You need to iron your shirts as well, but crumpled suits don't give off a youthful image for anyone over 40.

My brother stopped smoking, and immediately gained 15 KG in weight, his blood pressure went crazy (he was interned in a hospital for some days) and his hair turned gray-white in months... And he was just turning 40.... But the good thing is he gained overall, long-term good health. He will live longer, that's for sure.

Recently attended a funeral and realized the black suit I was wearing was one of the first suits I bought after college (1994). Definitely got my money’s worth on that purchase and kinda proud that at 52 I’m still fitting into a suit from my mid 20’s. Luckily it’s a classic cut business suit so no embarrassing shoulder pads or too wide/ too narrow lapels.
Yes, I can appreciate this. I have a nice classic Hart Shaffner & Marx gray plaid suit bought about 1982 that still fits nicely, and people are amazed when I mention how old it is. One person said suits of that brand 'last forever'.
Dyed hair is bad, but I'm surprised this video didn't mention toupees or weaves. I figure if the likes of a moneybags like Elton John can't get a decent syrup there's no hope for us mortals. Don't get me started on those things they glue to your scalp that look like upcycled debris from the shower drain. A number 1 cut saves on barber's fees, shampoo and embarrassment from wind induced comb over failures. If it's good enough for Jean Luc, it's good enough for me.
Fasting. I notice an improvement in my skin when I am faithful to my regimen, not to mention other aspects of general well-being. It hasn't brought my hair back, but that's a lot to ask.

Thinning hair and receding hairline is FAR from the worst thing that can happen to a man. My father-in-law (late-50s) insists on maintaining an 80's hair band mullet (now entirely gray) despite the fact that the bands have been defunct for decades and their members are dying at a significant rate. That coupled with his sleeveless shirts and baggy cargo pants is a painful sight.
I am certainly middle aged at 55 years of age and I have to say this is perhaps one of your most important videos. Those of us lucky enough to have hair have made the mistake of having too young haircuts....I certainly have. Although I do dress well there is ALWAYS room for new ideas and advice. Well done Sven. Happy New Year.
Found Raphael's discussion of the personal, professional and social rewards of middle age to be very insightful, and encouraging. Very nice to hear a comprehensive, thoughtful perspective on that experience.
Actually, I'm 50, and I never feared losing my hair. I come from a family of bald men - my father, my grandfather, my uncle, my brother, all started losing their hair pretty young, so I never gave it too much thought, you can't win over genetics I guess. So when my hair started thinning, I went for a fully shaved head and a beard (which I keep about 6-8 mm long). I think it's a great look for men, and it can even make you look younger - in my case, even if some white hair started slowly creeping upon my beard these days, people often think I'm in my early 40s instead of being 50.
Two points as a middle age man, 60 next anniversary. 1, no turtle neck sweaters for me, I like the look but i find that they drag if i am not very recently close shaven. 2, do not wear sunscreen ... UV-A has significant health giving properties, and UV-B works with Vit D to boost your immune system ... no significat UV-C gets through the atmosphere.
Having a well fitting suit is so important for formal occasions. Since most ppl don't wear suits everyday anymore alot of guys I see st weddings and what not have of the rack suits that haven't been altered to their body type and they look awful.i get compliments at these occasions for looking good in a suit and I know its only bc most guys there have unaltered while mine is custom fitted. So simple and yet so many guys don't realize how much a difference it makes.
Agreed. I buy brand name suits at thrift stores for usually under $20 and take them to get altered. My seamstress charges $45 to alter the pants and jacket. It's worth every penny. I often get compliments on the look - everybody thinks I spent thousands when in fact I have less than $65 invested. I also get my shirts trimmed ($10 each) so no more "muffin man" look at the waistline. Again, worth every penny.
Dress however you want at any age. I love when older people dye their hair, weird flashy things and try weird fashion. It inspires me to do so. If you have the confidence, you can rock ANYTHING. Even your birthday suit, the best suit of all.

Hello! I have a question - how good in terms of durability and overall functionality is 100% cashmere on a sports jacket/blazer? Is it durable enough to be worn multiple times a week? Thank you in advance!
Cashmere and specifically camel hair are softer fibers. Any wardrobe will benefit from rotation and not wearing the same thing day in, day out. That being said if all else is equal, camel hair with wear our faster than cashmere, which wears out faster than tweed. Wool is generally a bit more durable, but it all depends on the weave, the weight, the quality of the fiber etc. A low quality cashmere blazer will pill much more quickly than a higher end one...
I will be 50 in a few months and I am glad that I am alive to make mistakes. lol It was this year that really got me looking at classic style as I found myself wearing pretty much the same style for the last 30 years and had put little thought into proper fit. Here's to dressing with dignity.

This video is great. It definitely helps men to know how to feel better about themselves regardless of age. There seems to be this false believe that to dress well you have to have alot of money; this is simply not true. Like the old saying goes, knowledge is power; all you need is the knowledge of how to dress, and where to purchase quality clothing for a reasonable price. I buy most of my clothes from eBay, or other second hand stores, for a fraction of the price of new. And I have learned a ton about dressing, and menswear, from Gentleman's Gazette.

@20:34 I would just bring the trouser-length down an inch to avoid the 'high-water' look (which, ironically, is in style with many of the current younger generation). Especially with trousers with a fuller cut. And when wearing Chelsea-boots (love yours, btw), a slightly more tapered lower legged pair of trousers (or jeans) always looks better.
My Yoga instructor is an older woman, and she says it r=drives her nuts how older men lift their shoulders up, thinking it makes them taller. She said it drops their heads and faces down, making them look older. SHe says older men should roll their shoulders down and back, which will have the effect of lifting up your head, and making you look taller.

Can't run away from aging, just accept it and age in grace and style.
If middle-aged men do not shave properly...
Posture. I see older guys slouching, and nothing makes you look older than slouching. Stand up straight please.
Dyed hair. Jet black hair on a fifty year old man looks terrible.
I thought the thumbnail meant “you can’t wear any more helmets!” 😆

When I stopped smoking it made me look ten years younger.
Have you tried smoking a pipe (the pipe tobacco kind of pipe)? It will make you look even younger and promotes the discontinuation of cigarette smoking 👍
why did you start in the first place?
Truth
My brother stopped smoking, and immediately gained 15 KG in weight, his blood pressure went crazy (he was interned in a hospital for some days) and his hair turned gray-white in months... And he was just turning 40.... But the good thing is he gained overall, long-term good health. He will live longer, that's for sure.
Do the trick, be a smoker for ten monthas, then stop ... then come back ... and stop ... Immortality is there, my friend.
That white turtleneck sweater on camel colored blazer is incredibly sharp.
Love the blazer but not a fan of the white turtleneck. At least for me.
@@dees9502 That's fair, but What color turtleneck would you pair with something like that?
Perhaps if you’re Carl Sagan
I believe it isn't a white turtleneck, it seems to be a cream color...i don't think a white turtleneck looks good with camel, the undertones would clash, the cream and camel, both have warm.undertones and compliment each other
@@CrystalRuizEnriquez It is indeed cream. Of course, the way the light reflects in the video can make it seem white, but it is cream / off white because it harmonizes better with the camel

Not to forget: dyed hair can look awful in certain light, specially sunlight, as dark colours change to a blunt, unnatural brown.
I agree. I look back at pictures from years ago and cringe at the terrible dye job. I said F it and leave it gray
Agreed
Dyed hair is bad, but I'm surprised this video didn't mention toupees or weaves. I figure if the likes of a moneybags like Elton John can't get a decent syrup there's no hope for us mortals. Don't get me started on those things they glue to your scalp that look like upcycled debris from the shower drain. A number 1 cut saves on barber's fees, shampoo and embarrassment from wind induced comb over failures. If it's good enough for Jean Luc, it's good enough for me.

My brothers and I wore turtleneck sweaters under a sport coat in the 1970's...and that's exactly where that look ended for me!

Found Raphael's discussion of the personal, professional and social rewards of middle age to be very insightful, and encouraging. Very nice to hear a comprehensive, thoughtful perspective on that experience.
I just love this new style of editing
I just shave my head. As they say the problem with going bald isn't that you don't grow hair; it's that you grow SOME hair.

Wear it and enjoy it! Don’t dry clean it too frequently

Hi
