- Welcome to our channel "Maples and Music"
After many years of exclusively growing / grafting container grown Japanese maples on our small home nursery we decided to create a youtube channel dedicated to Japanese maples. Our channel shows you how to care for your prized specimens with video's including pruning, re potting, grafting, soil mix, root pruning, fertilizer applications, and much more.
I also combine my years of music studying with many original arrangements to accompany the video's.
The Japanese maple trees in this video are all "mother" trees that we used for taking cuttings to do all our grafting during our nursery operation years. All the trees are in the ground or in containers on our property.
I give detailed description of where they grow best in the garden and the growth habits and coloration thru out the growing seasons.

Thank you so much for your great shows👍👍🙏
You’re welcome
The seiryu such is a gorgeous tree. An upright green laceleaf that is very unique in the fall. And wow I had never seen the Bonfire before. Thanks for the tour
Yes, the seiryu is a personal favorite of mine. Thanks for watching
Wonderful! The best Japanese Maple Teacher!

That Shishi Gashira ❤
🇺🇦Very high quality and diverse selection of Japanese maples. ☆☆☆☆☆
How do you lift such large pots of soil and move them?😁
The larger container grown Japanese maples are fairly easy to move with a good quality 2 wheel dolly. Although generally they are never moved once we decide on their location.

🇺🇦Please tell me. What is your coldest winter temperature?
@@AaaAaa-nn6mg we can get up to -20 celcius with driving north east winds during the winter. It never lasts that long, but it is sustained cold.
Wonderful video!!
Amazing, inspirational, lovely trees and garden. I'm actually starting with maple at the end of this month. I'm doing both trees and seeds.
Good luck with the start of the japanese maple garden!
What a beautiful garden. You are very lucky! I live in Southern California, and I don’t even know where to find these. I am just learning about gardening at 28 years old. I’m getting my forever house in a year or two, and I really want to start my Japanese maple garden. Will they do good in California weather ?
There are many japanese maples grown in California. Head out to your local independent garden shop that really caters to gardeners. You just have to be selective with which varieties wouldd be suitable for your growing area.
Nice. Wondering which of your cultivars you found the most challenging to graft successfully?
Hi Chris, Any of the varieties with really tight bud sets are always extremely difficult to graft with good high success rate.
For example, some of the varieties we grew would include Shaina, Shishigashira, Bonfire, orido nishiki, etc.
Grafting success would be considered very good if we had a 20 -25% success rate on those varieties.
Great video,
Beautiful property 👍..... How about doing a video on your process of propagating maples ❓... Just a thought.
I have a 4 part video series on our entire grafting process. It has its own separate playlist on my channel. Here is the link to the playlist:

I'm just curious, so I'm in the Midwest and I've had 3 maples that I purchased for containers and they were alive during the growing season. And so when winter set in I let them harden off
Now that we are in may they have not buded so some of the stems are dark brown and I'm assuming they are dead ❓ so giving me your best short answer
Should have I brought them out of the cold the first year or have I done something elese wrong? I have a three season room off the back of the house.
I have a makawa yatsubusa.... Orion and a shishishagiri and by the looks of things they didn't make it 🤔
@@myk1200s Hard to answer that without more details. Long sustained cold during the winter? In the praire provinces in Canada, always best to put them into some sort of shelter out of the driving winds in winter. Here in our area we get temps. of -20 C for short periods and all of our container trees are fine with that. Small containers with young trees we do keep in the greenhouse during the the winter
Thanks for the great video of all the beautiful trees. I was wondering if you pruned Osakazuki. I thought it would grow taller than the one in your garden.
Yes, an Osakazuki can grow taller. We have pruned ours to keep it at the height it is. You can expect a height of 2 1/2 meters ( 8' feet) by allowing the limbs to keep pushing upwards. It really all comes down to how you like to have it presented in your garden.
@@maplesandmusic Thanks for the quick response!
Thanks! If possible could you brighten the lighting on this video and repost? As recorded, it is difficult to distinguish the tree colors and leaf shapes. Still a lovely video.
Sorry, it was the setting on my phone -- not your video.
@@johnthorne1429 thanks for that update John, much appreciated! We do have video's on our channel with close up images of the tree leaf shapes and colours that are very detailed. In this video I just wanted to discuss each tree as I walked thru the garden
_10:00__ That tree on the right with the pink flowers is really beautiful, what’s it’s name ?_
that is a rhododendron
Plese try to show us the leaves
I do have a separate video showing close up leaf colours and shapes on my channel. Here it is:

Is maple Seiryu suitable for growing in a pot on a south balcony?
yes, definitely
Just remember, when you are container growing on a southern exposure you will get more sun / heat so have a good quality container with a good soil mix and most important, daily watering when not exposed to rain. I have video's on containers, watering and seiryu specific growing all on my channel.
Good luck!
Thank you so much
I have Chuxay Ghost Purple and Ghost Blue Maple seeds and don't know how to grow them. I don't know what to do with them to grow correctly.
Do you have a video on growing a Maple tree from seeds?
Yes, I do have a video on growing japanese maples from seeds. Just go thru my video playlist and you will find it
Thanks for the video.
Are you available for consultation?
You can send an email with your question. Just click the info arrow for my email. Generally I can discuss plant varieties and options but prefer to be on site.
I just can’t find your email
I don’t see an information arrow. I want help sourcing the trees and others
